신무용가 조택원에 대한 연구

Abstract

1926년 石井漠의 내한공연을 필두로 한국의 무용도 신무용이라는 이름하에 춤의 근대적 변화기를 맞는다. 石井漠의 공연이 그 상황에서 우리 근대무용시대를 여는 역할을 했다는 사실은 단순히 근대화의 물결을 터 주었다는 긍정적인 의미보다는 정치적 상황과 문화적 상황에서 전반적으로 겪어야 했던 한국역사가 갖는 과도기적 혼란과 자생적 발전을 단절당한 불행함과 무관하게만 볼 수 없다. 石井漠공연의 영향을 받고 그 후 일본으로 건너가 그의 문하생이 되어 이후 한국 신무용기의 지평을 연 조택원은 역사적 시기가 주는 혼란함 속에서 평생을 춤과 함께 하면서 자신의 예술관을 펼치게 되고, 특히 국외에서의 수많은 공연활동을 통해서 세계속에 한국무용가로서의 위치를 지키게 된다. 본 논문에서는 신무용 시기의 무용가 조택원을 당대의 시대적 배경과 무용현실 속에서 그가 작품을 통해, 서구문명과 전통적인 우리의 유산, 충격, 갈등을 어떻게 풀어가고 있으며 그 갈등을 통해 얻어낸 그의 무용관이 신무용기의 무용가로서 갖는 의의를 살펴보고자 했다. 그의 창작활동과 공연활동을 통해 그가 겪어야 했던 대사회적 갈등이나 예술적 고민들은 현재의 무용활동가들이 안고있는 문제와 하나의 역사적 맥락 속에서 이해되어지고 재평가되어져야 한다고 보며, 그의 무용인생을 통해 나타난 무용관에 대해 무용적인 평가와 더불어 역사적 상황과의 연관 속에서 평가해 보는 새로운 시각은 결코 흑백적인 양단의 결론을 유추하기 위함이 아니라, 오늘의 바람직하게 기대되는 바의 무용관을 정립하는데 초석이 되고자 함이다. 그러기 위해 1 . 石井漠의 신무용이 도래되기 이전의 무용의 상황을 파악, 이에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하고, 2. 조택원의 개인적 성향과 시대적 요청이 그의 무용인생을 어떠한 방향으로 이끌어 나갔는지를 고찰하여 3. 조택원의 무용세계가 갖는 특성을 살펴보고 4. 그가 한국무용계에 미친 영향을 국외활동과 은퇴후의 활동을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 결론적으로 조택원은 우리나라 실무용을 주도했던 개척자로서, 시대적 격동기의 불운함과 함께 한 대표적 무용가로서, 무용의 성숙기라 할 수 있는 후반기의 무용활동기간을 국외에서 보냄으로 해서 신무용의 뚜렷한 방법론을 이룩하지 못하는 아쉬움을 남겼다. 그러나 수많은 공연을 통해 세계속에 한국무용의 우수함을 성양하고, 은퇴 이후에도 한국무용계에 이바지한 공적은 전무후무하리만큼 높이 평가된다.;After Ishihi Baku's public performance in Korea in 1926, Korean dance came to be modernized to enter into the age of New Dance. The fact that his performance played the role of opening the age of modern dance has an affirmative sense that it opened the floodgate of modernization; but it also has a negative sense that his performance was deeply related to the political and cultural confusion of the transition period of Korea and that it blocked the natural development of Korean dance. Cho Taek-won, who was much impressed by Ishihi's performance and learned dancing from him, opened the age of New Dance in Korea. In the darkness of his age he devoted his lifetime to dancing and developed his aesthetics. And he established himself firmly as a world-famous Korean dancer through numerous performances outside the country. This thesis aims to analyze how Cho as a New Dancer overcame the shock given by the Western civilization in social circumstances of his age and in his contemporary situation of dance, and how he resolved the conflicts between the Korean tradition and the Western civilization through his dancing activities. And it deals with his view of dance which he won in the process of resolving the conflicts, and interprets its significance in the era of New Dance. His conflict against his contemporary society and his artistic trouble, which he could not but meet in artistic activities, should be understood and re-evaluated in the same historica1 context as problems met by the dancers of today. This thesis uses the method that his view of dance revealed through his dancing activities is evaluated in relation to his historical circumstances as well as in terms of dance. The method is not employed to discriminate black or white, but to lay a foundation stone to set up a desirable view of dance. For this purpose, this thesis analyzes circumstances of the Korean dance before the age of New Dance and inquires into to what direction Cho's personality and demands of his age led him, and then examines characteristics of Cho's dance world. To conclude, Cho was a pioneer who opened the Korean New Dance and was a representative dancer who lived in the age of darkness and misfortune. But it is regrettable that he did not establish any definite methodology of New Dance because of his too long stay in foreign countries during his maturer age of dancing. However, his feat of showing through many performances the excellence of Korean dance to the world and his contributions given to Korean dance have been unparallelled and should be appreciated highly.
