Abstract
This thesis is an analytic study of Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Warp, which was composed in 1915. Before beginning the analysis, research is conducted on his works using various articles to summerize the general characteristics of his music-instrumental combination, movement style, form, melodic structure, scale, harmany, rhythm, and tonality. The object of this thesis; Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Warp has a free form. This compact Sonata has a cyclic form which is thematically related by three movements. In this work, Debussy includes major and minor scales and soft, colorful melodies creating an oriental mood. The melody of this work employs triad, seventh, ninth and eleventh chords based on pentatonic and chromatic scales. In addition, Debussy makes this a modern work through the use of diminished chords, various mode, passing chord of harmony system, and the parallel motion of fifth, eighth interval which frequently emphasize the pedal tone. Debussy's techniques-variation in tempo and dynamics, unique rhythm distribution, pizzicato, marcato, Staccato, glissando, and harmonics-which are used through the whole work are employed to effectively express a colorful modern sound. Through the application of old techniques and experimentation with new ones, in this Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp, Debussy not only kept the romantic tradition but also presented his original musical style.
