Abstract
This study on the subject Opus, Bidan Kil, an English notation of SILK ROAD, with my numerous concert performances and analystic investigation comes to the following results: 1. THE FIRST MOVEMENT A) The form is composed of Prelude, an Introduction, Episode and Revival. That is; between gamut Tae(E) and Tae(e") it starts with serene environment, introduces subject theme, heightens rhythmical variation and revives subject theme: thus, concludes a rhythmical unity. B) Tempo ♪=88 is a main speed and 6/8 time is a central with an irregular time. C) Rhythm Is composed of ♩+♪ or ♪+♩ of time. D) Five notes(A.C.D.E.G) are key notes with La modes. However, subordinate note(E) is more emphasized then key note (A) (E) Form and Structure of Melody (1) Prelude reveals a comparision of a single melody and consonent process. (2) Central note (A) Introduces subject theme and rhythmical movements of note(E). Those two rhythmical movements, giving a same postlude, hint further continuation. (3) Episode reveals rhythmical movement with central note (E) and (A) with quartplet rhythms and quintplet rhythms. (4) Revival Is a rhythmical repetition of Introduction. (5) With traditional musical technics, the First Movement attributes a melodic ornament and variation of passage. 2. THE SECOND MOVEMENT A) The form composed of Prelude and Postlude. Prelude gives a slow heightening with speedy Quartplet rhythm, while postlude maintains Quintplet. B) Tempo of Prelude is ♩= 104 and that of later is ♩= 132. Main time is 4/4. C) Gamut Is from Tae(E) to Tae(e") but (A) are main note. D)Form and Structure of Melody (1) A traditional musical technic is used in Prelude. (2) Postlude emphasizes the circular temperament of Opus with composer's intention of composing technics. 3. THE THIRD MOVEMENT A) The form composed of three parts, that is; the first part gives a linear process, the second part does two rhythmical parallelism, and the last part gives repetition of the first part. B) Tempo is ♩= 60 and central time is 4/4. C) Rhythm is a single rhythm with □/□/♩/♪/□ D) The movement of melody in the first part defines a -curvet and subtlety; while, second part gives repetition of low tone, resembling the sounds of horse hoops and high tone with an irregular combination: thus, the movement attributes to give an exotic environment. Last part comes to a serene melody. 4. THE FOURTH MOVEMENT A) The form devided Into two parts. The first part again devided into former and later parts. B) Tempo of the former part of the first part is a continuation of speedy movement and those of later part is a gradual increase of speedy movement. However, the second part forms consistently with ♩.= 88. C) Form and Structure of Melody Former part gives an Irregular pitch with unique technic in the performance. Thus, forms an immanence of AVANT-GARDE music linked with Mr. John Cage's UNCERTAIN MUSIC. Later part revives the Introduction melody of the first movement giving the circular temperament of this Opus, SILK ROAD. Consequently, the First Movement opens by gayagum performer under traditional music technics. The Second Movement, with composer's unique performing technics, gives a variation. The Third Movement by an Irregular combination with low and high tones attributes to give an exotic environment. Finally the Fourth Movement, in the finale, giving a revival of the First Movement, presents the circular temperament of the Opus.
