Jerome Robbins의 예술성에 관한 연구

Abstract

The 20th century modern ballet has taken on a contemporary trend with natural expressions of movement that would be contrasted with the strict classic modes, in parallel with the introduction of choreographers of new age due to the change in the traditional thoughts on ballet since 1930. Especially, the American ballet that has become to take a leading role in 20th century ballet world within its surprisingly shorter period of growth has established a new ballet genre of its own upon the fertile ground of enthusiastic spectators, abundant material resources, and prominent dancers' impacts from foreign countries, as well as national interest on cultivating and upbringing superior domestic dancers. One of the great contributors to this American ballet was Jerome Robbins, native choreographer, who showed original American life and mental world in full swing more successfully than anyone else through his all-covering outstanding activities from commercial show business up to pure classic ballet, really prominently. Studying in his artical world, that is, some process of exploitation into his diverse choreographic characteristics and representative works, has led this study into a valid and objective identification of his contributions to 20th century American ballet. Results may be summed up as follows : First, he showed the consummation of commerical show through a wide range of choreographing from "On the Town" in 1944 to "Fiddler on the Roof" in 1964 ; heightened up the role of a choreographer in planning the musical as something very important; and, made he importance of dance in the musical fully recognized, reversing the traditional concept on the priorities among, drama and dance. Second, by creating a form of ‘dramatic narrative’, he enlarged the range of expression in the forms of drama, that is, from the musical to modern ballet, thereby forming a new trend of American ballet. Third, excluding European classic styles from the time distinguished in the American ballet circle with publishing of the "Fancy Free" with a subject matter of typical American core, he has established firmly a base for American dance style which would reflect prompt realities from the general life, experiences, social conducts and physical acts of the people. Fourth, not only improved dancers' abilities through by fostering strict exercises and extempore but complete performances of them; but also he has paid great endeavour to the cultivation of new choreographers: he founded an endowed school of Lena-Robbins;20C Modern Ballet는 1930年 以來 발레에 대한 傳統的 恩想이 변모하여 새로운 세대의 안무가들이 등장하면서 엄격한 古典方式이 아닌 자연스러운 움직임의 어휘사용으로 現代的 경향을 띄게 되었다. 특히, 놀라울 정도의 짧은 歷史가운데 20C 발레의 主役이 된 미국발레는 熱性的 관중과 풍부한 物質的 資源, 그리고 外國의 최우수 무용가들의 영향 및 미국출신 무용가들의 育成을 通하여 독자적인 발레의 새로운 쟝르를 이룩하였다. 이러한 미국발레에 至大한 영향을 미친 本土 出身 接舞家 Jerome Robbins는 다른 어떤 안무가보다도 다양한 예술적 資質로써 상법적인 쇼 비지니스에서 순수 古典발레에 이르기까지 최고의 안무가도 인정받으면서 진정한 미국인의 삶과 精神世界를 유감없이 발휘하여 미국적인 발레를 具現하였다. 본 論文에서는 Jerome Robbins의 다양한 接舞性向과 대표적인 作品을 분석하여 그의 예술성을 硏究함으로써 그가 20C 미국발레에 끼친 영향과 공헌도를 糾明하고자 했으며 연구 결과는 첫째, Jerome Robbins 는 1944 年 「On the town」으로 부터「Fiddler on the roof」에 이르기까지 수많은 브로드웨이 뮤지칼을 안무함으로써 Commercial show의 극치를 보여 주었고, 뮤지칼의 기획과정에서 안무지도자의 役割을 매우 중요한 취지로 끌어올렸을 뿐 아니라 뮤지칼에서의 노래와 드라마, 댄스라는 우선 순위를 뒤바꾸면서 무용의 중요성을 인식시켰다. 둘째 , 그는 이야기 극 (dramatic narrative) 을 創案함으로써 뮤지칼에서 Modern Ballet에 이르기까지 創의 형식을 추구하여 표현의 영역을 확대하였으며 이를 통해 미국발레의 새로운 潮流를 형성 하였다. 세째, 미국인의 典型을 소재로 한 「Fancy Free」를 발표한 그는 유럽의 古典的 스타일의 발레를 배제하고 사람들의 삶과 경험, 그리고 사회적 행동과 육체적 행위에서 즉각적인 현실을 反映하는 미국스타일의 무용기만을 確立하였다. 네째, 그는 무용수들에 대해서도 철저한 훈련과 卽興的이고 完全한 연기를 誘發시켜 실력을 향상시키고, 미국 발레예술의 質的 수준을 향상시켰을 뿐 아니라 Lena Robbins재단의 設立으로 새로운 안무가들의 育成에 힘씀으로써 20C 미국발레의 主導的인 人物로 自他가 公認하고 있음을 알게 되었다.
