영어 진행형의 의미론적 분석

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 진행형에 대한 여러 학자의 견해를 비교, 분석하고 이를 토대로 보다 나은 진행형 문제의 해결방안을 모색하는데 있다. 특히 인간의 심리적 요인 중에서 행위자의 의도와 화자의 기대를 언어 표현을 해석하는 데 중요한 요인으로 보고 δ-함수를 구체화시켜 진행형 문장을 설명해 줄 수 있음을 보인다. 영어의 진행형 문장에 대한 의미론적 분석은 지금까지 여러 학자들에게 있어서 관심의 대상이 되어 왔으며 학자마다 다소 변형된 이론을 제시하고 있다. Dowty(1979)는 형식의미론의 틀 속에서 가능 세계와 진리 조건을 중심으로 진행형을 분석하기 위한 모형을 제시하였다. 그러나 그의 모형은 완전 함수(total function)에 기초를 두고 인간의 심리적 상태를 무시하였기 때문에 인간의 마음상태와 밀접한 관계가 있는 언어의 해석에 있어서 몇가지 문제점을 남기게 되었다. 이를 해결하기 위한 학자들의 노력은 Hinrichs(1983), Cooper(1985), Meulen(1985) 등으로 이어져 왔다. Hinrichs(1983)는 Dowty의 완전 함수에서 벗어나 부분 함수(partial function)에 근거한 상황의미론의 입장에서 진행형을 설명하고 있다. 상황의미론에서는 심리의미론이 강조한 인간의 마음을 중요시여겨 언어 표현과 그 표현이 뜻할 수 있는 일의 상태는 인간의 마음 상태가 받아들일 수 있는 것만을 수용한다고 주장한다. 이러한 기본 개념을 바탕으로 Hinrichs는 Dowty의 모형에서 문제시된 진행형 문장을 해결하고 있다. Cooper(1985)도 상황의미론에서의 개념을 그대로 받아들이거나 다소 수정하여 진행형을 분석하고 있다. Dowty가 관성의 세계를 도입한 데 반해 그는 역사(history)의 확장의 개념을 사용하였다. 진행형에서의 동사구는 위치되지 않은(unlocated) 상태로 보고 그 동작이 완성되었을 때 비로소 위치되는(located) 것으로 본다. 따라서 진행중인 사실을 포함하는 하나의 역사는 그 사실이 완성되는 것을 포함하는 그 역사의 확장이 가능하다고 보고 이 확장성(extensibility)의 견지에서 진행형의 문장을 설명하고자 하였다. Meulen(1985)은 구조화된 영역(structured domain)내에서 전체와 부분의 관계를 중심으로 진행형 문제를 해결하고자 했다. 즉 진행형 문장은 미완성된 사건을 의미하며 이것이 부분이 되어 완성된 전체 사건과 부분과 전체의 관계로 맺어진다고 설명하고 있다. 본 논문은 이러한 여러 학자의 견해를 고찰해 본 결과 상황의미론에 바탕을 두고 제약(constraint)이라는 개념을 중심으로 인간의 심리적 요인을 구체화시켜 지금까지 문제점으로 여겨져 왔던 진행형 문장을 해석할 수 있음을 보이고 있다.;The purpose of this paper is to propose an alternative analysis of the English Progressive. The semantic analysis of the English Progressive has received considerable attention in the recent linguistic literature. First, I critically review four recent proposals on the semantics of Progressives. They are works done by Dowty (1979), Hinrichs (1983), Cooper (1985), and Meulen (1985). The review notes an important development from Formal Semantics to Situation Semantics. The latter has strong emphasis on the partially defined courses of events and structural constraints between them, whereas the former is based on the notions of truth condition, possible world, and total function. Situation Semantics takes the human mind into consideration, which the so-called Psychological Semantics considers as a fundamenta1 base in defining the meaning in general. The Present study contends that there is a close relation between linguistic expressions and human mind. Therefore, Dowty's model, that ignores the state of mind in interpreting linguistic expressions, is argued to give rise to some problems. It is noted that Hinrichs' proposal of structural constraints are important features of Situation Semantics. Those structural constraints are related to the human mind. It is argued that an adequate analysis of the progressive can be achieved by elaborating the ∂-function in the framework of the Situation Semantics as a situational element. This thesis represents the agent's intention and the speaker's expectation as the relevant psychological factors in providing a proper analysis of the English Progressive.
