The whole plant of Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke(Rosaceae) has been used as a folk medicine in treating amenorrhea, inflammation, fever and traumatic injuries, etc.. A cecoction of the plant is taken to treat rheumatism, to cure cough, or as a tonic for tubercular or generally weak people. The juice may be taken to treat fever, as an antidote for arrow poison, also as an antiseptic. As a part of finding the biologically active components from Duchesneae Herba, antitumor activity of its water soluble fraction has been studied. The fraction was examined for anti-tumor inhibition ratios of the water soluble fraction from Duchesneae Herba were 60.1, 62.4%, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of Duchesneae Herba against the three species bacteria was observed.: E. coli, B. Subtilis, S. aureus. The effects of Duchesneae Herba on the growth of bacterial cells were variable depending upon the species of bacterium. Of the Hexane soluble fraction from Duchesneae Herba. 2 preparative substances (Rf. 0.81 and Rf. 0.68) have been shown positive results for antimicrobial test. A sterol compound, mp 136-138˚, [α]_(D)^(25) = -35˚ (C=1, CHCl_(3)), was isolated from Hexane soluble fraction of Duchesneae Herba. The compound was identified on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions. A sterol compound was identified as stigmast-5-en-3β-ol, β-sitosterol.;뱀 딸기, 사매, Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke (Rosaceae) 의 全草의 水溶性 분획을 ICR-mice에 이식한 sarcoma 180 cell에 대하여 抗腫瘍 活性을 檢討한 結果, 60.1 %, 62.4%의 腫瘍저지율을 나타내었다. 또 抗癌活性을 나타낸 분획에는 22.5%의 多糖類와 4.65%의 단백질이 含有되어 있었다. 사매의 抗菌力을 檢討한 結果, E. coli , S. aureus, B.subtilis 3菌에 대하여 사매의 Hexane 可溶性 분획이 抗菌力을 나타내었고, 特히 R_(f). 0.81인 物質과 R_(f).0.68인 物質의 沆菌力은 强力하였다. 사매의 Hexane 可溶性 분획에서 sterol 化合物을 分離하여 그의 化學構造를 理化學的 實驗 및 speetral data를 綜合하여 Stigmast-5-en-3β-ol,mp 136-138°[α]^(25)_(D)=-35°(C=1,CHCl_(3)) β- sitosterol 로 확인하였다.
