Abstract

오늘날 최초의 민간소재의 코메디 발레라고 불리우는 La Fille Mal Grarde′e는 18세기부터 우리에게 직접 전해지는 두개의 발레 중 하나이다. (다른 하나는 Royal Denish Ballet의 레파토리에 속해 있는 "The Whims of Cupid and the Ballet Master"로 잘 상연 되지 않는다. ) 이 현존하는 가장 오래된 코메디 발레는 200여년이지나도록 세계 도처의 발레단들체들에 의해 재연되어 왔고 많은 위대한 발레리나들이 즐겨하는 애호물이 되어왔다. 이 발레의 안무가인 Jean Bercher Douberval은 1747년 프랑스 태생으로 Jean Georges Novelle에게 사사를 받았으며 1789년 보르도 (Bordeaux)에서 이 작품을 무대에 올리게, 된다. 이 La Fille Mal Garde′e는 한마디로 말해서 도베르발이 그의 스승인 노베르의 이론, Ballet da＇ction을 집대성해 놓은 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 당시의 고 전적 관습에서 벗어나 무용수들의 자연스러운 움직임과 마임, 등장인물 의 성격에 어울리는 평상복과 같은 의상, 그리고 무엇보다도 그 극의 주제와 어울리는 연기와 연출로 인해 당시 프랑스 혁명과 함께 혁신 적인 면을 선 보였다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 이 발레가 만들어 졌던 시대적 상황과 발레사적 상황을 살펴본 다음 도베르발의 예술세계에서 그의 스승이었던 노 베르가 펴낸 이론인 Ballet da＇ction이 무엇이며 또 그것이 이 작품 즉 도베르발에게 끼친 영향을 고찰하여 보았다. 그다음 현재로는 도베르발의 안무원형이 남아있지 않기 때문에 영국 로열 발레의 Frederick Ashton경이 각색한 것을 중심으로 안무와 그 특징들을 살펴본뒤 이 발레가 발레사에서 차지하는 의의와 현대발레에 끼친 영향까지를 고찰 해 보았다. 따라서 오늘날 코메디 발레의 모태가 된 La Fille Mal Garde′e를 연구한 결과 그 의의를 간단히 종합해 보면 다음과 같다. 먼저 이 발레는 18세기 전통에서 벗어나 노베르의 Ballet da＇ct-ion을 도입, 실천에 옮긴 코믹 발레의 대작이며 발레사상 최초로 테마에 민간을 도입시켰다는데 그 의의가 크다. 다음, 둘째로 이 발레가 낭만주의 발레의 길을 연 작품으로써 작품 자체에 낭만주의적 사고방식을 도입시키고 있다. 약간은 센티멘탈하지만 용감한 소녀 리제트와 진실된 시골청년 콜라스사이의 사랑에 대한 안무자의 관점에서 그것을 느낄 수 가 있으며 그 내용안에서 "위대한 자연"이라든가 "자연의 섭리"등을 강조하고 있음을 감지 할 수 있다. 마지막으로 혁명과 함께 공연된 이 작품은 당시 혁명에 찌들린 사람들에게 편안한 안식처를 제공해 주었다. 프랑스 혁명이후 잠시 정치 적 선전으로 이용되었던 발레에서 처음으로 대중에게 만족을 주었던 최초의 작품이었던 것이다. 이상과 같이 이 작품의 의의를 추정해 볼 수 있겠지만 오늘날 우 리가 무엇보다 중요시 하며 자주 공연하는 이유는 최초의 코믹 발레로서 그 주제면에 있어서 시대를 초월 할 수 있는 평범한 민간인의 희극적인 단면을 그린데 있다고 할 수 있다. La Fille Mal Garde＇e 는 현대발레에도 그 영향을 끼쳐 오늘날 존 크랑코( John Cranko, 1927-1973 )를 통해 그 사상과 특징적 요소등을 구현시킴으로써 코메디 발레의 모태로써의 역할을 충실히 하고있다.;La Fille Mal Gardee, the earlist comedy ballet based on a story of ordinary people, is one of the two which have been handed down from the 18th century. (The other is The Whims of Cupid and the Ballet Master included in the repertoire for the Royal Danish Ballet but seldom performed) This, the oldest existing comedy ballet, has been recreated on stage by numerous ballet companies all over the world for more than 200 years, and loved by many great ballerinas. Born in 1747 in France, Jean Bercher Dauberval studied under Jean-Georges Noverre and staged La Fille Mal Gardee in 1789 in Bordeaux. In a word, he gave comprehensive expression to Noverre's theory, Ballet d'Action, with this ballet. Breaking out of the classical tradition, he, along with the French Revolution, introduced some revolutionary aspects through natural movement and mime of dancers, casual costumes fitting the characterization of the dramatis personae, and especially, through acting and directing which suited the theme of the dance. First, this study is geared to give understanding of the times when La Fille Mal Gardee was choreographed as well as the historical conditions of ballet at that period, to examine Noverre's Ballet d'Action in terms of Dauberval's artistic world, and then, to investigate the influence of the theory on Daubernal's creation of La Fille Mal Gardee. Second, this study aims to observe the choreography and the characters of La Fille Mal Gardee centerning around Sir Frederick Ashton's adoptation, since Dauberval's original choreography has not survived, and then, to investigate the significance of La Fille Mal Gardee in terms of ballet history. The results drawn from this study of La Fille Mal Gardee, being the fundamental of comedy ballet, can be summarized briefly as follows; First, La Fille Mal Gardee, as the masterpiece of comic ballet, has great significance in its breakaway from the 18th century tradition and in the introduction and realization of Noverre's Ballet d'Action. Also, its greatness lies in the fact that it is the first ballet based on the life style of ordinary people. Second, by making way for the romantic ballet, La Fille Mal Gardee introduced the romantic way of thinking. This is shown by the way the choreographer treated the love between the somewhat sentimental but courageous girl Lisette and the sincere country boy Colas, and by the way he emphasized the ‘great Nature’and ‘dispensation of Nature’in the content of the ballet. Finally, the ballet provided exhausted people caught in the vortex of the Revolution, with a means of escape from harsh reality. Unlike other ballet works which were exploited as a means of propaganda for a certain period of time after the Revolution, La Fille Mal Gardee is the first ballet that satisfied the public. In conclusion, La Fille Mal Gardee is the first comic ballet and it described such comic aspects of ordinary people that its them transcends time. This is way La Fille Mal Gardee is considered so important and is performed frequently.
