Leo Sowerby의 오르간 음악에 대한 연구

Abstract

싸워비(Leo Sowerby, 1895~1968)는 20세기 중엽 미국의 대표적인 오르간 작곡가 이며 동시에 St. James 성당의 오르가니스트 및 성가대 지휘자로 활동한 교회음악가이다. 그는 여러 분야에 걸쳐 작품을 썼는데, 특별히 오르간과 교회 합창을 위한 작품들이 중요한 부류를 차지한다. 본 논문은 먼저 싸워비의 생애를 간단히 서술하고, 다음으로 그의 오르간 작품들의 소개와 음악적 특징을 다루었다. 그리고 마지막으로 그의 대표적인 오르간 연주회용 작품인 Symphony in G major 중에서 passacaglia를 분석함으로써, 구체적으로 그 형식과 특징을 살펴보았다. 분석의 결과 다음과 같은 특징이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 첫째, 이 곡은 8마디, 3박자의 주제가 선율모양을 바꾸지 않고 33번 반복되는데, 각 변주는 모방, 동형진행, 반복, 축소, 확대, 역행, 반진행, 전위, 보속음등 대위법적 기법을 주로 사용하고 있다. 이는 싸워비가 즐겨쓰는 수법으로서 이곡의 후반부에 많이 나타난다. 둘째, 화성은 곡 전체를 통해 4도화음, 7, 9, 11도 화음, 병행화음등 인상주의적 경향과 후기 낭만의 특징인 반음계 진행이 많이 나타난다. 그러나, 종지의 화음 진행은 조성음악의 종지형에 근거되어 있어, 화성은 전체적으로 볼 때 조성음악의 범위 안에 있다고 할 수 있다. 셋째, 이 곡은 Syncopation이 있는 음형이 주된 음형을 이루는데 이는 미국의 민속음악인 블루스와 재즈에서 온 리듬으로서 싸워비는 이것을 그의 음악의 요소로 사용하여 미국적인 정신을 표현하려 하였다. 넷째, 싸워비는 이 곡에서 각 변주마다 각기 다른 Registration을 지시하고 있다. 이와 같이 Registration에 자주 변화를 주는 것은 싸워비 오르간 음악의 특징으로서 그의 chorale prelude에 특히 많이 나타난다. 결론적으로 싸워비는 Messiaen이나 Schoenberg 처럼 특별한 음악 양식을 갖지는 않으나 바로크로부터 19세기에 이르는 서양의 전통적 음악 양식을 바탕으로 하여 미국의 민속음악인 블루스와 재즈의 요소가 합해진 독특한 음악세계를 나타내 보이고 있다.;Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) is the most Prominent American organ composer in the mid-twentieth century. Also he is a church musician, and. he served as an organist and choirmaster at St. James' Cathedral, Chicago. He wrote in many idioms, but his most significant contribution was, in the field of organ and sacred choral music. In this thesis, the writer first describes briefly' the life of Sowerby. Second, the writer deals with Sowerby's organ works and characteristics of Sowerby's music. Last, the writer analysis Passacaglia in Symphony in G major for organ. This passacaglia was researched in detail and it's form and musical idioms was examines. AS a result of analysis, the following characteristics are appeared. 1. This work is repeated 8 measure, 3 meter's theme that are not changed in melody figure, and each variation is used the contrapuntal techniques-that is imitation, sequence, repetition, augmentation, diminution, retrograde, contrary motion, inversion, pedal point and so on. This is the main technique that Sowerby enjoys and especially is appeared in the latter half. 2. The Harmony - the Quartal Harmony, 7th, 9th, 11th harmony, parallel Harmony-that is impressionistic tendency and chsomaticism is appeared through the entire tune. But Harmonic process of Cadence is made of process of limit of tonal music, so the harmony is in the limit of tonal music. 3. This work is made of rhythmic figure that has syncopation and this is the rhythm from the Blues and Jazz of American folk music, and Sowerby wants to express the American spirit by using it as his musical material. 4. In this work, points out the different registration in each variation. Like this, the variety in the registration is the characteristics of Sowerby's organ music, and is appeared especially often in his chorale prelude, In conclusion. Sowerby didn't have the special musical form such as that of Messiaen or Schoenberg. But he express special music world that is harmonized of the Blues and jazz of American folk music, based on traditional western music from Baroque to 19th century.
