플라톤의 「소피스트」편에서의 (εiυαι)의 의미와 용법

Abstract

고대 희랍 철학을 다루는 데는 세가지 접근법이 있다. 첫째는 텍스트 자체에 대한 해석(Exegesis)의 문제이다. 두번째는, 일단 해석상의 한 관점을 취해 텍스트 자체의 논의 (Argument)의 타당성(Validity)을 문제삼는 것이다. 마지막으로 고대 철학이 현대 철학의 문제에 대해 어떤 의의가 있는가, 즉 고대 철학과 현대 철학의 관계성(relevance)을 다루는 것이다. 이때 두 번째와 세 번째 문제를 다루기 앞서 첫번째 문제가 선행되어야 한다고 생각한다. 텍스트 자체가 어떤 문제를 제기하고 해결해 가는가에 대한 올바른 해석이 선행하지 않으면 두·세 번째 문제들도 올바르게 조명될 수 없기 때문이다. 이에 본 논문은 플라톤의 「소피스트」편에 대한 해석상의 문제를 다루고자 한다. 「소피스트」편의 주된 문제들을 존재 물음으로 보아 텍스트에서 쓰이는 □v(Being) 내지 ε□vαι(be)동사를 존재적 의미로 받아들이는 전통적 해석을 비판하여, 본 논문은 「소피스트」편이 의미론적 차원에서 주어-술어의 문제를 다루고 있으며, 이때 쓰이는 □v과 ε□vαι는 존재적 의미로 해석될 수 없음을 보이고자 한다. 그리고 이런 관점에서 「소피스트」편을 철학사적으로 새로이 평가하고자 한다.;There are three approaches to Ancient Greek Philosophy. The frist is the exegetic study on the original text itself. The second is to examine, taking an exegetic viewpoint, the validity of the arguments of the text. And the third is to pursue the relevance of Ancient Greek Philosophy to the modern philosophical problems. I think the first approach takes precedence over the second and the third, because the latters can not be rightly illuminated without the right understanding on the original text. In this thesis I deal with the exegetic problem on Sophist : What is the central problem of Sophist? In chapter Ⅱ, I generally criticize the traditional exegeses who claim that the central problems of the dialogue are about the existence problem and the verb 'to be' exercising in the text means 'exist'. In Cchapter Ⅲ, I concretely criticize the traditional exegeses by analyzing the text itself and justify the claim of this thesis. The central arguments are about the subject-predicate problem in the sementical dimension. The verb 'to be' and Being exercise in the two-place predicate (X is Y) and mean '- is really -'. In the last chapter, in conclusion, I make some remarks on the philosophical contribution of Sophist.
