E. Goffman의 연극적 사회학에 대한 분석적 고찰

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 일상생활을 분석할 수 있는 하나의 새로운 시각으로서, E. 고프만의 연극학적 사회학을 분석·검토하여 고프만에 대한 올바른 이해 및 평가를 위한 기초를 마련하고, 발전 및 적용가능성을 지적함으로써, 연극학적 분석론의 중요성을 부각시켜 보려는 데 있다. 고프만이론의 핵심은, 일상생활을 하나의 연극무대에 비유하여, 공연자로서의 행위자가 "지금 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지"에 대해 어떻게 상황을 정의하며, 청중앞에서 어떻게 자신을 내보이려 하는 지를 분석하고자 하였다. 분석대상을 일상적인 상황에서 행위자들이 어떻게 상황정의를 하고, 또 이를 견지하기 위해 어떻게 인상관리를 하면서 일상의 경험을 구성해나가는 지에 관심을 두고 있는 것이다. 이러한 일상생활의 분석을 통해, 당연시 여겨지는 규범을 파헤쳐낼 수 있고, 개인이 이러한 상황의 틀안에서 어떻게 자아를 표현하면서 자유영역을 확보하는지를 세밀히 밝혀내고 있다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 이러한 관점이 어떻게 특징지워지는지를 검토해보고, 종합 및 비판을 통해, 고프만이론이 사회생활을 이해하는데 얼마나 유용한 지를 평가하기 위한 지침을 마련해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 우선 고프만의 지적 배경을 검토하겠다. 지적배경을 다룬 Ⅱ장에서는 고프만 이론이 상징적 상호 작용론과 현상학의 맥락에서 구조주의적 성향을 포함하고 있음이 지적된다. 본론에서는 먼저 고프만의 연극학적 분석법을 그의 저작들을 중심으로 검토하겠다. 그리고 Ⅳ장에서는 고프만의 <경험틀의 분석>을 다루겠다. 여기서는 개개인의 자아표현 및 인상관리를 주로 다루어 왔던 연극학적 분석론을 발전시켜 일반적인 사회적 경험을 분석할 수 있는 방법을 제시하고 있다. Ⅴ장에서는 고프만이론을 종합, 재구성하고 비판 및 쟁점을 다룸으로써 고프만에 대한 재인식 및 올바른 평가를 위한 기초를 마련하겠다. 끝으로 결론에서는 이를 바탕으로 하여, 고프만이론의 발전 및 가능성을 검토하고 고프만이론의 중요성을 부각시켜 보겠다. 고프만의 연극학적 분석론은 체계적인 이론으로 발전 못하고, 여리가지 한계점이 있으며, 또한 고프만에 대한 기존 연구가 부족하므로 미비하나마 본 연구가 고프만에 대한 재인식 및 보다 더 체계적 연구 및 발전을 위한 바탕이 되는 것으로서 그 의의를 찾고자 한다.;This study aims to analyze and examine the Dramaturgical Sociology of Erving Goffman, as a new perspective for studying everyday life, and to give a foundation to understand and evaluate that perspective rightly. And then, it gives a weight to Goffman's perspective by examining the possibility of development and applicability of it. Goffman wants to analyze the everyday life compared to the stage, where actors as the players define the situation and then make an impression and make efforts to sustain it. To know what's the character of that perspective and how it is available to understand everyday life, I attempt to review and re-construct the Dramaturgical Sociology. At first, I will deal with the intellectual backgrounds of Goffman, especially phenomenology and symbolic interactionism, and make clear that Goffman's theory has the tendency of structuralism. In Chapter Ⅲ, I will review and interpret the Goffman's work one by one, and in Chapter Ⅳ I'll show the Goffman's analytical frame to study the whole experience. And then, I will synthesize and reconstruct the Goffman's view and examine not only the criticism about him and anticriticism, in Chapter Ⅴ. Finally, I prospect the development and applicability of his view about the everyday life. Through this study, I insist that the dramaturgical perspective contributes to the study of everyday life. And if there's the help of more developmental strategies of methodology and more efforts on the systematic theory, it would be a very important theory of sociology. My study is only a first step to that work. And, I hope that there are more concern and intensive studies into the Dramaturgical Sociology, on the basis of my study.
