한글 글자의 시각 체제화에 미치는 모음의 역할

Abstract

한글은 그 구조上 영어와는 다르다. 즉 한글은 한개 이상의 자음낱자와 모음낱자가 결합하여 하나의 글자를 구성하고 있다. 본 논문은 기이판단과제(oddity judgement task)를 사용한 실험Ⅰ과 Ⅱ 및 Ⅲ을 통해서 한글 글자의 시각적 체제화(visual organization)에 미치는 모음의 역할을 분석하고자 했다. 이 영애 연구(1984)에 의하면 한글 글자는 자음과 모음이라는 이질 차원으로 구성되어 있음에도 불구하고, Garner(1978, 1981)의 예언과는 달리 중간 정도의 좋은 집단화(grouping)를 이루고 있으며, 이러한 집단화로 초래된 출현 속성(emergent feature)이 낱자의 변별을 촉진시킨다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 이때 자음낱자는 맥락(예, 모음)에 의해 비교적 적은 촉진 효과를 나타냈음에 反해 모음낱자는 맥락(예, 자음)이 주어지므로서 낱자 단독으로 있을때보다 지각 변별이 크게 촉진되었다. 본 논문에서는 집단화에 의한 맥락촉진효과上의 이러한 자·모음간의 차이를 출현 속성설 및 주의집중설을 중심으로 하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 실험 Ⅰ과 Ⅲ에 의해 낱자 자체의 현저성 (distinctiveness)수준에 따라 변별의 차이를 가져온다는 출현 속성설이 지지되었고, 실험Ⅱ에서는 주의집중과 관련되는 글자內에서의 모음의 위치역시 단화에 의한 촉진효과上의 차이를 가져옴을 밝혔다. 그 外에 한글 글자의 집단화와 관련된 모음의 다른 성질들이 선행연구들과 비교하여 검토되었다.;The structure of Korean letter, Hanguel is different from that of English. Hanguel is composed of more than a vowel and a consonant letter. Using the oddity judgement task, three experiments examined the role of a vowel in the visual organization of Korean letters. Even though Hanguel is structured by the letters of heterogeneous dimensions, Young Ai Lee's work (1984) showed that it was well grouped and its emergent features facilitated the perception of component letters contrary to Garner's point on grouping (1978, 1981). She proved that the perceptual discrimination of a letter with context was more facilitated than a separate letter by another letter or another types of context. While the discrimination of a vowel letter was more facilitated by adding a consonant as context, that of a consonant was less improved by a vowel. In a word, a vowel letter was more influenced than a consonant by the perceptual grouping to Guelja. This study analyzed such properties of a vowel on the visual organization of Hanguel. The important factor was proved to be the characteristics of distinctiveness level of a vowel letter itself. By the result of experiment Ⅱ, the position of a vowel letter in Hanguel-Guelja was also verified as a relative variable. Another issues about the properties of a vowel related to the perceptual grouping of Guelja were discussed in comparison to previous studies.
