Abstract
The purpose of this study lies in suggesting a desirable direction so that the production of bathroom facilities in the future can be improved in accordance with the physical condition of the Korean, and at the same time proposing a desirable direction of the interior decoration of a bathroom so that a bathroom can be understood as a more comfortable and beautiful space from the viewpoint of interior design in order to elevate the Korean's interest degree in a bathroom, by checking all the details of bathrooms of Korean middle-class homes (25-35 pyong Apartments in Seoul) and measuring the Korean's recognition and interest degree in a bathroom. As a method of this study, I adopted the type of questionaire for the investigation of the actual conditions and sampled the basic data, and I presented the theoretical background through many related literatures of Korea and foreign countries. Centering around privately operated apartments (25-35 Pyong) in Seoul, I checked the present condition of apartment facilities and synthesized opinions of dwellers. As the data of this study, I selected 222 copies of questionaire whose reply-contents are substantial among 258 copies of questionaire which were collected and I had them statistics-treated by a computer. As a method the statics-treatment, I analyzed percentage, Chi-square test. The result is as follows, 1. As the actual conditions were investigated, centering around apartments, all the details of bathrooms have already been equiped in Western style. In the use of bathrooms, 91.1% was being used only as spaces for bathrooms themselves. 57.0% of all the respondents answered that a bathroom was less important than any other spaces such as a living room, a bedroom, and a kitchen. 2. 57.9% of them answered that the size of a bathroom was narrow, and 33.5% of them answered that the size of a washbasin was small, and 54.1% of them answered that the size of a bathtub was adequate and 43.6% of them answered that it was small and shallow. 3. 50.9% of them expressed their discontent about the color of a bathroom. As that reason, 33.6% of them indicated that the color of the floor was dark and the color harmony was dull, and 27.0% of them indicated that the color harmony was immature. Housewives below their forties desired that the color of a bathroom be changed into various neutral tint (Pastel tint). 4. Only 10.6% of them rebuilt their bathrooms according to their own taste. 57.2% of them desired the rebuilding of storage and 42.3% of them desired the change of color, and 40.1% of them desired the separation of bathroom and toilet, and 28.9% of them desired the change of bathtub. In conclusion, I could find that though the Korean people in apartments were discontented with the color of a bathroom, the physical unsuitabieness of facilities, and the narrowness of bathroom space, they assumed rather a passive attitude of adapting themselves to the given surroundings than a positive attitude of reconstructing unsuitable. Also I could find that though some of them were interested in a bathroom, most of them did not recognize a bathroom as a space off important function to be treated aesthetically but as only a space for solving their physical desire, and also did not regard a bathroom as an important space as any other rooms.
