특수도서관의 정기간행물 평가에 관한 연구

Abstract

Recently, the problems of library space and budget for the periodicals in special libraries have been considerably serious. Consequently, it is imperative that the library undertake a through and systematic review of its periodicals in order to establish sound bases for cancellations. The purpose of this study is to evaluate periodicals collection of Korea Development Institute Information Resources Center with a view selecting the candidates for cancellation. For this purpose, three methods - citation analysis, use study and survey of users' opinion - were used, and 446 periodical subscriptions were reviewed. For the survey of users' opinion, a list of current subscriptions was sent to 29 members of Korea Development Institute and they were asked to mark a priority rating(1-5 grades) to each title on the list. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. Among 446 periodicals surveyed, 137 titles (30.7%) had been cited and the top 70 ranking titles provided 91.2 percent of all citations. 313 titles (70.2%) had been used and the 71 most frequently used titles constituted 75.6 percent of all recorded use. It was found that 123 titles (27.5%) were not in use even once. 2. In comparison with the top ranking titles of each method, 34 periodicals in common were selected as 'core journal'. 3. A list of 69 titles being brought up for consideration for cancellation was prepared, which had been asessed as low priority by users. 4. 69 titles in the list were eveluated in consideration of frequency of citation and use, and the value measured by users as principal criteria: availability in other libraries, subscription price, relation to current research a Korea Development Institute, holdings in Korea Development Institute and librarians' professional judgement as subordinate criteria. Finally, 17 titles were proposed for cancellation.;오늘날 특수도서관에 있어 정기간행물 관리상의 예산 및 공간문제는 점차 심각해지고 있다. 따라서 그 해결책으로 정기간행물을 평가하고, 그 결과를 토대로 정기간행물의 구독중지를 실시하는 것의 중요성이 대두되고 있다. 본 논문은 우리나라 경제학 분야의 대표적인 특수도서관이라 할 수 있는 한국개발연구원 정보자료실을 조사대상기관으로 한 정기간행물 장서의 전반적인 평가에 대한 연구이다. 인용분석, 이용조사, 이용자의 의견조사 등 3가지 방법으로 정기간행물 장서의 평가를 실시한 결과, 자료실이 입수하고 있는 영어로 된 외국 정기간행물에 대한 전반적인 이용상황 및 이용자들의 평가 정도를 보다 확실하게 파악하였으며, 나타난 평가결과와 함께 여러 가지 부수적인 평가요인들을 종합하여 가장 이용도 및 가치가 낮은 정기간행물들을 구분함으로써 구독중지해도 무방할 것들을 규명하는데 실질적인 정보를 제공할 수 있었다. 정기 간행물 장서를 평가하고 구독중지 결정을 내리기까지의 과정 및 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 정기간행물들의 가치를 비교하기 위해 「한국개발연구」에서의 인용빈도분석을 실시하였고, 신간열람·복사·대출통계를 산출하는 이용조사가 병행되었다. 그리고 이용자들에게 정기간행물리스트를 배부하여 5등급 중에서 해당하는 등급에 표시하도록 하는 이용자 의견조사도 실시하였다. 제시된 5등급 중에서 1, 2등급을 '계속구독의견'으로 보고 각 정기간행물이 받은 계속 구독의견수를 조사하였다. 2. 조사결과, 적은 수의 정기간행물에 대부분의 인용과 이용이 집중되어 있음이 밝혀졌고, 조사대상 446종의 27.5 %인 123종의 정기간행물이 인용 및 이용빈도가 모두 없는 것으로 나타났다. 3. 인용분석, 이용조사, 이용자 의견조사의 결과로 작성된 각각의 상위리스트들을 비교하여 공통적으로 포함되어 있는 34종을 핵심잡지로 선정하였다. 또한 이 34종의 핵심잡지와 경제학분야 타연구의 결과들과 비교해 볼 때, 많은 수의 정기간행물이 공통된 것으로 나타났다. 4. 이용자들의 주관적인 평가에 우선 순위를 두어 구독중지 검토대상이 될 정기간행물을 선정하였다. 따라서 계속구독의견수가 2이하인 69종의 '1차 구독중지 검토대상 리스트'가 작성되었다. 5. 리스트에 포함된 69종의 정기간행물은 인용 및 이용빈도, 계속 구독의견수외에도 타기관에서의 소장여부, 가격, 본 연구원의 연구과제와의 관련성, 자료실 내에서의 소장상황, 사서의 판단 등 여러 가지 평가요인을 고려하여 구독중지여부가 판단되었는데 최종적으로 17종의 구독중지대상 정기간행물을 결정할 수 있었다.
