Abstract

발레가 처음으로 紹介된 以來 오랜동안 유럽出身 舞踊家들에 의해 主導되어왔던 美國의 발레藝術活動은 今世紀에 들어와 美國自體의 舞踊團의 設立과 함께 본격적으로 活性化되기 시작하였으며 오늘날 美國의 발레界는 수많은 世界的인 舞踊家와 接舞家를 輩出해 내는 産室의 역할을 담당하며 世界발레의 中心地로 변모하였다. 그러한 발전의 基盤을 造成하는데에 일익을 담당하였던 주요 발레藝術家中의 한 사람으로, 英國出身의 按舞家이자 舞踊家인 동시에 발레敎育家이기도 한 Antony Tudor는 탁월한 藝術性과 呼訴力을 겸비한 많은 훌륭한 作品들의 創作活動을 통하여 발레 스타일의 多樣化를 도모하는 한편 美國의 발레觀客의 底邊擴大에 크게 寄與한 20泄紀 발레史上 가장 위대한 接舞家중의 한 사람으로 評價받고 있다. 1909年 英國의 런던에서 出生한 Antony Tudor는 1928年 발레에 入門한 以來 1930年代末까지 接舞家로서, 그리고 舞踊家로서의 天賦的인 재능을 발휘하며 「Jardin aux Lilas」(英名; Lilac Garden)를 위시하여 많은 발레作品을 창작하면서 英國土着발레(native ballet)의 定着에 크게 貢獻하었다. 그러나 그가 세계적인 接舞家로서의 名聲을 획득할 수 있었던 것은 1939年 美國으로 건너가서 Ballet Theatre와 合流하고서부터이다. 그곳에서 그는 자신의 不朽의 傑作이라 할 수 있는 「Pillar of Fire」와 그 외에도 충격적인 新鮮함을 가진 많은 作品들과 함께 소위 "心理學的 발레 (Psychological Ballet)"라고 하는 獨創的인 作品世界를 構築함으로써 現代발레( modern ballet)의 새 章을 여는 동시에 발레의 主題와 表現의領域을 꾸준히 擴張시켜 왔다. 本 論文은 Antony Tudor의 生涯와 按舞性向 및 그의 作品世界를 分析하고 美國발레의 發展에 끼친 그의 影響力을 評價함으로써 그가 이룩한 業績을 測定하려는 데에 그 意義를 두고 있다. 이 硏究의 結果를 綜合하여 살펴보면, 첫째, Antony Tudor는 주로 非傳統的이고 反因習的인 性모럴을 主題로 한 作品들을 통하여 "心理學的 발레 "라고 하는 전혀 새로운 表現主義 발레의 쟝르를 개척하여 보다 다양한 발레스타일을 추구하였으며, 둘째, 그는 現代舞踊의 技巧를 應用하고 人間의 日常的인 動作을 導入하여 그것들을 발레의 舞踊言語로 變形함으로써 舞踊家의 人間性과 個性이 최대한으로 존중되고 近代的인 劇的 感覺이 충분히 살려진, "古典的인 傳統을 創造的으로 表現하는" 動作體系를 수립하는 데에 성공하였으며, 세째, 그러한 作業을 통하여 그는 그때까지의 전통적인 발레 槪念에 일대 변혁을 일으켰으며, 또한 그는 많은 個性있는 발레藝術家들의 藝術精神을 자극하여 지극히 美國的인 舞踊의 胎動을 위한 基盤을 達成하는 데에 일익을 담당하며 美國발레를 가히 世界的이라고 할 수 있는 수준으로까지 이끌어 올리는 데에 至大한 貢獻을 한 記念碑的인 存在로 評價된다.;America, which had been nothing but a colonial market of European ballet, became the center of the world ballet in the twentieth century and the American ballet community now takes the role of producing many world-famous dancers and choreographers. Antony Tudor, an English-born choreographer, dancer and ballet educator, who made a great contribution to enlarging ballet audience in America and to diversifying ballet styles by creating numerous artistic and appealing masterpieces, is regarded as one of those great choreographers in this century. Tudor was born in London in 1909. From 1928, when he first entered into ballet, till the end of the 1930's, he created many ballet works including "JARDIN AUX LILAS", showing off his natural talents as a dancer and choreographer. He did much in settling down English native ballet. But it was not until 1939, when he went over to America and joined the Ballet Theatre, where he achieved a world-wide reputation as a choreographer. In there, he marked a new epoch in American modern ballet. In his everlasting masterpiece,"PILLAR OF FIRE", and many other works of surprising freshness, he steadily expanded the realm of choosing themes and theires-expressions by establishing his own world of ballet, so called psychological ballet. The main purpose of this thesis is to measure Antony Tudor's contributions by means of examining his choreographic inclination, analyzing his works and estimating his influence upon American ballet. The results of this study are as follows; Firstly: with works whose theme is antitraditional and anti-conventional sexual moral, Tudor developed "psychological ballet"- a brand-new expressionistic genre of ballet; so that he shared the role of a midwife for the birth of extremely Americanized dance. Secondly: applying techniques of modern dance and introducing daily motion of human being into the ballet, he succeeded in setting up a system of movement in which classical tradition is creatively expressed with modern dramatic senses and the dancer's individuality is respected to the maximum. Finally: through a series of works he greatly changed the traditional concept of ballet as well as he did much for producing many young choreographers and dancers of marked individuality. Therefore, Antony Tudor can be regarded as a monumental being in the history of the dancer who exalted the level of American ballet up to that of the world.
