Art Nouveau Fashion

Abstract

Art Nouveau는 기계문명에 대한 반발로 시작되어 19C末부터 20C初에 걸쳐 유럽을 중심으로 세계적으로 성행한 새로운 예술양식이다. 그것은 「세기말」, 「Belle Epoque」의 물질적 풍요와 향락적, 퇴폐적 분위기를 배경으로, 상징주의적 미학을 도입, 감각적인 곡선과 동·식물 motif를 특징으로 하는 독창적인 장식의 예술이다. 본 논문에서는 Art Nouveau Fashion을 고찰하고자 했다. Fashion이란 그시대 예술 전반에 걸친 공통적인 양식감정을 기반으로 이루어지며, 인간의 의식구조와 정신세계, 생활감각과 미의식을 표현하는 가장 구체적인 생활조형이기 때문이다. 아르누보 패션은 시기적으로는 아르누보 운동이 국제적으로 개화되고, 동시에 bustle의상의 거대한 부풀림이 사라지고 신체에 맞는 자연스러운 실루엣으로 변화될 무렵, 즉 1890년경부터, 아르누보양식의 종식, 현대 패션의 기능적인 style의 등장으로 연결되는 제 1차세계대전 까지의 기간으로 볼 수 있다. 이 기간은 다시 인위적인 bustle의 소멸에서 부터 corset추방까지의 S-curve style과 corset추방에서 완전한 행동의 자유를 부여한 기능적인 현대 패션까지의 Grecce style 및 Hoble style로 구분할 수 있는데 이 때 Oriental Mode도 동시에 나타났다. S-curve style은 전체적으로 길게 휘어져 흐르며 물결치는듯한 생동감을 표현했고, Greece style 및 Hobble style은 가늘고 길게 흘러내리는 유연한 선과 각기 독특한 drapery를 형성하며 다양한 형태로 나타났다. 현대적인 감각의 단순화된 실루엣에 독특한 문양과 beads 등을 이용하여 다양한 평면장식을 가했다. 보다 색다른 것을 추구하는 동양취미의 산물로는 기모노style을 비롯하여 turban, harem pants, minaret tunic 등이 있다. 독특한 동·식물 motif를 양식화한 직물 디자인과 그로테스크한 환상세계를 보여주는 보석공예에 아르누보의 본질적인 성격이 잘 나타난다. 이 시기에, "제예술의 종합"을 추구하며 디자인분야를 예술영역으로 확립한 아르누보운동을 배경으로 창조적인 패션디자이너와 패션일러스터레이터가 대거 등장했고, 패션은 예술과 융합되었다. 그러나 패션은 자유로운 예술이 아니라 생활에 복역하는 예술이므로 「예술을 위한 예술」, 아르누보의 극단적인 감각과 극단적인 형태가 그대로 나타나지는 않았다. 그렇지만 기본적인 모든 경향, 즉, 유기적이고 動的인 線의 중시, 동·식물motif, 역사취미와 이국취미, 탐미적이고 향락적인 과잉장식과 호화취미, 관능적이고 환상적이며 그로테스크한 감정까지 모두 반영되어 나타났다. 그리하여 아르누보 패션은 성숙한 여인의 세련된 엘레강스와 에로티시즘을 표현했다.;Art Nouveau was the new style of art which was started in reaction aganist machine civilization in the last decade of the 19th and the early years of the 20th century and which flowered all over world centering around Europe. Aesthetics of Symbolism was applied for it with material abundance and decadent, pleasure-seeking mood of "Fin do siecle" and "Belle Epoque" for the background. It was a creative-decorative art inspired by sensuous curvillinear shape and botanical and biological forms. I tried to find out Art Nouveau style in fashion for this thesis, Because fashion is based on the common feeling of style about the art of a certain period, and it is the most concreate form of life art which expresses one's line of thinking and the mental world, one's feeling in life and an aesthetic sense. The age of Art Nouveau fashion could be regarded from 1890, that is, about the time Art Nouveau movement was world wide developed, at the same time the plumpness of bustle style disappeared and changed to the natural silhouette fitted snugly, and to the World War I rinked with the end of Art Nouveau style and the coming of the functional style of modern fashion. Furthermore, this term could be classified with s-curve style which is since the disappearance of bustle untill the banishment of corset, and Greek and Hobble style till the modern functional fashion which endowed with the whole freedom of doings since the banishment of corset. Oriental Mode showed up together these times. S-curve style expresses rhythmical sense which seems long-curved flowing and ling in its whole aspect. Greek and Hobble style included various kinds of form, were forming slim-long flowing line and some unique drapery. Those styles were modern sensual silhouette simplified, but the surface was decorated with unique pattern. The product of Orientalism in pursuit of the more unusual thing were kimono style, turban, harem pants, minaret tunic. Textiles formalized with the unique botanical and biological motif, and jewelry showing up the grotesque world of fantasy do well express the substantial character of Art Nouveau. On the background of Art Nouveau established the field of design up to the level of art, many creative fashion designers and fashion illustrators were appeared, and fashion was combined with Art. But fashion is not the unrestricted art but the art subject to one's life. So the extreme forms and extreme sense of Art Nouveau representing "L'art pour L'art" were not ad fitted. Howerer, all the fundamental tendencies were reflected in fashion: organic and rhythmic stress of lire, botanical and biological motif, historism and exoticism, aesthetic and pleasure-seeking over decoration and luxuriousness, erotic, grotesque fantasticism. Then Art Nouveau fashion was a mirror of a polished elegance and eroticism of a mature woman.
