수정확대표준 이론에서의 격과 θ역할에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 수정 확대표준이론(Revised Extended Standard Theory)에서 격(Case)과 θ-역할(θ-role)에 관하여 살펴 봄으로써 그들이 각각 보편문법(Universal Grammar ; UG)에서 보여주는 설명력을 시사하고, 그럼에도 불구하고 남는 문제점들에 대한 해결을 꾀하여 보다 완벽한 핵심문법 (Core grammar)을 정립하는 데 있다. 제Ⅱ장은 격이론 (Case Theory)에 관한 연구로서, 우선 Chomsky(1981a) 격부여 원리 (Case-assignment Principle)를 알아 본 후, 모든 현재적(overt) NP는 격을 갖지 않으면 안된다는 격여과 원칙 (Case Filter)에 따라 규칙 Move-α의 동기와 격이론의 설명력을 보여준다. 제Ⅲ장은 θ-이론에 관한 연구로서 격이론과 θ-이론이 중복적 설명력을 갖는다는 전제하에 두 이론을 통합할 수 있는 방안을 모색하지만 이는 결국 자유규칙 Move-α에 제약을 걸게 되므로 격이론과 θ-이론은 따로 UG내에 존재해야 한다는 것이 증명된다. 제Ⅳ장은 격이론의 문제점들을 다루는데 그 문제점으로는 격부여의 비 일관성, 이중 NP구문의 부적절한 취급, 격여과의 과잉 여과력등을 제시한다. 제Ⅴ장에서는 Lectures on Government and Binding(LGB)에서의 Chomsky의 격이론과 θ-이론을 수정 또는 보완하여 제Ⅳ장에서 제시한 문제점들의 해결 방안을 모색하는 동시에, 의미론뿐만 아니라 통사론에서도 기능적 측면의 정보가 필요하다는 사실을 실례를 들어 강조하고 있다.;The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: first, to re-examine the explanatory power of Chomsky's (1981a) Case and θ-theories and then, to propose a more perfect core grammar that can solve some crucial problems involving Chomsky's Case and θ-theories currently held. In chapter Ⅱ, I will deal with Chomsky's (1981a ) Case theory. After examining his principles of Case-assignment, I will attempt to show the explanatory power of his Case theory on the basis of Case Filter. In chapter Ⅲ, I will deal with Chomsky's (1981a) θ-theory. Here I will attempt to untangle the overlapping of roles between the Case theory and the θ-theory, thus restricting the power of free Move-а itself. Consequently, it is proved that Chomsky's Case and θ-theories must exist separately in Universal Grammar(UG). In chapter Ⅳ, I will show some problems involving Case-assignment. Within Chomsky's (1981a) GB theory, Case-assignment is not a unitary process: in particular, Case-assignment to a double NP construction is nonintuitive and Case Filter, too powerful. In chapter Ⅴ, an attempt is made to solve the problems raised in chapter Ⅳ through modification or complementary device of the Case theory and the θ-theory in Lectures on Government and Binding (LGB). At the same time, citing appropriate examples, I emphasize that the functional information is needed not only in semantics but also in syntax.
