Abstract
The purposes of this thesis are: 1. To analyze the characteristics of documentary photo-graphy, 2. To examine the F.S.A. (Farm Security Administration) Documentary Photographic Campaign on the basis of the characteristics analyzed, 3. To study the practical reapplication of documentary photographic campaign in the future. To collect the materials for this study, a library survey was conducted and especially historical research was needed. And an appendix composed by photographs taken during the F.S.A. Campaign was added. Documentary photography was analyzed in following aspects: Intentionality, Documentation, Artistic quality, and Communicablen Intentionality means a basic motive for taking a picture. And documentation represents the essential quality of photography as a "sincere eyewitness". A creative dramatization of reality enables the photography to reach a state of art. Finally, it is the sphere of communicableness that recognizes the photography as a medium of public communication, and consider the public as receiver of a specific message. Documentary photography in America was developed mainly during the F.S.A. Campaign. In the early part of 1930 ' s, America was faced with an economic crisis called the Great Depression. President Roosevelt proposed the New Deal as a solution, and carried it out. One of these policies was the relief of migrant workers and sharecroppers. To do this, public relations were needed. As a result, the photographic unit of F.S.A. was established. F.S.A. Documentary Photographic Campaign is a series of P.R. project through photographs conducted by the Photographic Unit (or the Historical Section) of F.S.A. The main purposes of the project were: 1. To record frankly the miserable state of social affairs. 2. To use the photographs as P.R. materials to help the government carry out the relief policy. The Campaign continued for about eight years from 1935 to 1943. Roy Emerson Stryker was the head of the unit and among his staffs were Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, and Ben Shahn. They traveled all over the country to do their tasks, and gathered about two hundred seventy thousand negatives. Most of them are kept in the Library of Congress now. Based on the four characteristics above, the F.S.A. Campaign has the following significance: In respect to its intentionality, 1. It was the first photographic project supported by the government, 2. It was the pioneer attempt to consider sociological use of photography. In its documentation, 1. The F.S.A. photographers established a method of documentation which is called the historical approach, 2. The F.S.A. photographs show the bitter spirit of the time. From the artistic viewpoint. 1. The F.S.A. photographers were real artists who created some great masterpieces, 2. Thus their photographs were sublimated into the artistic dimension. In the point of communicableness, they used photography as the most developed visual medium in those years. Finally, in 1971, the U.S. Government planned the second photographic project, named "Project Documerica," based on the same concepts as those of F.S.A. It is being carried out at the present time. From this, we can foresee the practical reapplication of documentary photographic campaign in the future.
