천년왕국운동의 사회적 기능에 관한 연구

Abstract

지금까지 종교의 사회적 기능을 언급함에 있어서 사회 변혁의 기능보다는 통합, 유지의 기능만이 주로 강조되어 왔다. 이에 본 논문에서는 민중의 이상세계에의 대망이 구체적인 사회현실에 투영되어 절박하고도 궁극적인, 현세지향적이며 집단적인 구원을 갈망하는 민중 종교 운동으로서의 천년왕국운동에 대해 역사-사회학적으로 고찰해 봄으로써 종교의 사회 변혁의 기능을 부각시켜 보고자 하였다. 천년왕국운동은 그 사회적, 시대적 배경에 따라 각기 다른 유형으로 나타나며, 그 전개 과정에 있어서도 사회적 상황의 변화에 따라 달리 전개되는 등 그 공통성과 전개 과정을 고찰하는데 있어 어려움에 직면하게 되지만, 역사적으로 항상 종교적 이단으로 그리고 지배세력에 대한 민중의 저항으로 일관되어옴으로써 종교-사회 혁명을 일으키거나 그 잠재력을 내포하고 있는 것으로 평가되어질 수 있다. 그러나, 한편으로 천년왕국운동은 종종 탈사회적인 양상을 띠어 환상적인 도피를 제공하여 주는 체제순응적, 신비주의적 제의 (cult)로 남게 되거나, 탈종교적으로 되어 세속화된 사회-정치운동으로 변모되기도 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 혁명운동에 있어 변혁의 이데올로기는 언제나 새로운 질서를 향한 전환-구원의 요소를 포함하고 있기에, 천년왕국주의적 전통안에서 우리는 다른 어떠한 전통에서보다도 가장 감동적이고 암시적인 언어로 민중의 변혁의 열망이 표출되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 더구나 그 종말론적인 미래에의 개연성(contingency)으로 말미암아 민중의 유토피아적 대망을 부단히 신선하게 함으로써, 역사를 고착시켜 버리려는 일체의 의도를 거부하는 민중의 힘으로 작용하게 되는 것이다.;In sociology of religion, when it studies social functions of religion, it has stressed the particular function of social unity and integration. There was a tendency to overlook the more important function of social change and transformation. The purpose of this paper is to study of Millenarian Movements from a sociological perspective to reveal the function of transformation in religion. Millenarian Movements have risen out of the people's suffering in this world from which the desperate need for salvation is demanded. They are the religious movements of the oppressed. And Millenarian Movements are the religious movements that expect imminent total, ultimate, this-worldly & collective salvation. They are a desperate hope of the people not only for oneself but for everyone who is suffering, and not only to change oneself's lot but to change the whole world. As a people's movement, Millenarian Movements are manifested different forms and characteristics depending on its social and historical backgrounds. Thus, it is difficult to grasp some definite common characteristics in various historical manifestations of Millenarian Movements. But one main outstanding characteristic of Millenarian Movements is that is has always been condemned as religious heresy from the main line and orthodox point of view. That is, it has resisted the religious orthodoxy. As Millenarian Movements progress with both religious pressure and political repression, it would become a religious fanaticism and escape from the secular and historical realm to be apolitical. On the other hand, Millenarian Movements would lose its religious character and become a social movement or a social institution with a particular ideology. However, when it functions as Millenarian Movements, it would be one of the most powerful ideologies that would move the people for the revolutionary aspiration to change the whole society with a new order for human salvation. For Millenarian Movements are rich in its apocalyptic language stimulating people's religious and political imagination for the entirely new world. So it can be noted that the frustrating characteristic of this Millenarian Movements is its eternal contingency. It means that hopes for the millennial world will be or will not be realized within this history. It would always remain only in hope. But this is no weakness but a strength of Millenarian Movements which would give a renewed hope with a renewed vision of the future world. For Millenarian Movements would not stagnate itself but in the renewed hope of the people it transforms itself for the new aspiration and for the new vision about the future.
