나무표피(樹皮)에 의한 이미지 표현 연구

Abstract

우리 주변의 자연에 속한 모든 대상들은 각자 고유한 특성과 이미지를 지니고 있다. 자연은 역사와 시대를 거쳐 많은 예술작품으로 표현되어 왔으며, 이 중 나무는 고대에서 현대에 이르기까지 일관된 작품의 대상으로 사용되었다. 나무의 표피는 생물학적인 나무의 외피로써 그 특성과 이미지를 대변한다. 본 연구는 나무표피를 주제로 하여 그 조형적 특성을 분석하고, 작가의 관점에 의해 이미지화하여 이를 자수 작품을 통해 표현하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 나무표피의 일반적 개념을 살펴보고, 그 조형적 특성과 형태를 분류, 분석하였다. 둘째, 이미지의 일반적인 개념을 살펴보고, 이를 외적인 표면적 이미지와 내적인 작가적 이미지로 분류, 분석하였다. 셋째, 현대미술, 섬유예술, 현대자수에 이르기까지 나무를 대상으로 한 작가들의 작품 중 나무 표피를 중심으로 표현한 작품을 분석하였다. 표현내용은 나무표피를 주제로 하여, 조형적 특성을 확대, 축소, 변형하는 방법으로 재구성하였다. 표현재료로는 수직실크, 합성섬유, 폴리에스테르를 바탕으로 조각천을 덧붙이고, 지퍼를 자르고 여러 겹 붙이는 방식으로 나무표피의 질감을 표현하고 견사, 금·은사 등을 굵기와 꼬임을 다르게 한 실을 사용하였다. 제작과정에서 나무표피의 질감 및 부조적 표현을 위해 우드락과 솜, 지퍼를 이용하여 바탕화면을 구성한 후 나무표피의 질감을 평수, 속수, 이음수, 매듭수, 쌀알수, 징금수 등의 다양한 자수 기법으로 표현하였다. 본 연구는 나무표피의 조형적 특성과 이미지를 분석하고, 그 표면적 이미지를 다양한 재료, 색채, 기법 등을 통해 재구성하여 자수 작품으로 표현함으로써 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 작품 내용에 있어 나무표피의 내·외적 이미지를 분석하여 나무표피가 지니는 미적 가치를 찾을 수 있었다. 둘째, 작품 구성에 있어 나무표피의 조형적 요소를 확대, 축소, 변형하여 다양한 시각의 나무표피 이미지를 보여줄 수 있었다. 셋째, 작품 재료에 있어 나무표피의 조형적 요소를 확대, 축소, 변형하여 다양한 시각의 나무표피 이미지를 보여줄 수 있었다. 넷째, 자수 기법에 있어 평수, 이음수, 매듭수, 쌀알수, 징금수를 주로 사용하여 나무표피의 질감 및 형태를 효과적으로 표현할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 프레임 방법에 있어 반원통, 평면형의 아크릴을 주로 사용하여 나무 자체의 형태를 표현할 수 있었고, 공간을 두고 이중, 삼중으로 겹쳐서 제작하여 중첩된 이미지를 표현할 수 있었다. 본 연구에 따라 다양한 시각으로 자연 사물을 바라볼 수 있었고, 여러 가지 재료와 자수 기법을 사용한 결과 새로운 자수 표현이 가능하였다. 사물에 대한 인식과 표현방법은 작가의 시각에 따라 다양할 수 있으므로, 이에 대한 발전적이며 지속적인 연구가 필요할 것이다. ; All the surrounding objects have their own unique forms, images and features. Diverse objects in nature have also been expressed in various works of art over history and periods as a factor composing the nature. Trees among those natural objects have been used as an object of works continuously from the modern arts to contemporary arts, as the vitality of tree and the evidence of life are expressed in works of art through mental images. The epidermis of tree represent such features of tree. Therefore, this study attempts to express external and internal images of the epidermis into an embroidery through the external form of a definite object, the epidermis of tree. And, this study is to focus on change in its form by light and colors concerning images in texture of the epidermis, and to revive a new work of art by recomposing and transforming those images. Theories of this study are as follows; First, terminology and common meanings of the epidermis of tree, and artistic view to the epidermis were analyzed, and its form was analyzed according to its formative features and peel-off and cracking features. Second, the relationship between the general concept of images and the epidermis of tree by views were examined internally and externally. Third, focused on expressions of the epidermis of tree among works of artists who expressed tree as an object in the fields of modern arts, fiber arts, and modern embroidery, what they expressed tree in their works on the basis of creativity by their views was studied. With respect to the overall form, the researcher paid attention to the form of grain shown differently by gaze, light, and quality and composed it formatively by transforming its form. In view of the overall colors, various colors shown by changes in the natural light were transformed on the basis of brown tone - the main color of tree. For materials of embroidery, zipper, woodrock, cotton, silk thread, gold thread, and silver thread were used on the grounds of handwoven silk, synthetic fiber, and polyester. As embroidering techniques, inner embroidery, chain embroidery, knot embroidery, flat embroidery, and tying embroidery were used with transformation by changes in thickness and tanglement of thread on the basis of plane embroidery in zipper. Through the study of expressing images of the epidermis of tree, the following findings were obtained; First, concerning contents of the work, the researcher attempted to express that individual objects are self-protective beings through the passage of enduring life in nature, on the other hand, homogeneous beings in view of the whole form to reveal the property of rendering of nature, as form of tree is shown differently by visual changes. Second, the researcher attempted to show more embodied images of the epidermis of tree, with respect to composition of the work, by expressing the current of grain with change in straight lines and curves as well as the embossed expression using zipper and woodrock. Third, concerning materials of the work, the researcher expressed appropriately embossment effects in the texturized synthetic fiber and handwoven silk by using zipper with unique texture and woodrock available of carving. Fourth, the researcher showed highly effects of the quality of the epidermis in view of embroidering technique by giving variety to length, thickness and tanglement of thread with tying embroidery to express the current of smooth grain and chain embroidery, knot embroidery, and grain-shape embroidery to express the coarse and embossed appearance. Based on the embroidery, this study made the researcher could re-recognize the surrounding nature as a material of works of art and expand the range of expression in the field of formative arts.
