현대인의 익명(匿名)적 이미지

Abstract

역사적으로 볼 때 예술작품은 정서적, 시각적 언어를 통해 작가가 살고 있는 시대가 개성적으로 투영되어 있는 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 예술작품이 본질적인 가치와 특성을 가지려면 그 작가와 작품만의 독특한 세계관을 지녀야 한다. 즉, '무엇을 볼 것인가?', '어떻게 볼 것인가?' 라는 이 질문들은 작가가 작업을 시작하게되는 물음으로, 작업의 방향과 성격을 결정하는데 중요한 역할을 하게 되는 것이다. 따라서 현대 미술에 나타나는 다양하고 복잡한 표현은 이 시대의 예술이 현대 사회를 인식함에 있어 여러 가지 복합적 시각이 요구되는 현실의 반영인 셈이다. 그러나 '무엇을, 어떻게 볼 것인가?'라는 물음은 '무엇'이라는 대상에 집중하기 이전에 이 물음 자체가 작가의 정체성을 찾아가기 위한 과정에서의 목표라는 것을 생각해야 한다. 본인은 '현대 사회를 어떻게 볼 것인가?', '무엇을 보고 표현할 것인가?' 라는 두 가지 물음을 가지고 작업을 시작하는 데 이는 단순하게 현대 사회가 어떤 문제를 가지고 있는지 분석, 비판하려는 것이 아니다. 이 두 가지 물음은 '나'라는 존재를 찾기 위해 본인이 생각하고 사고하는 정신적인 것뿐만 아니라 본인이 발을 딛고 살아가는 현실과 그 속에 존재하는 다른 무수한 사람들과의 관계를 통해 자신의 모습을 찾고자하는 것으로, 자신의 주변 환경을 먼저 살펴보고자 함이 담겨 있는 것이다. 현대 사회는 모든 것이 급격하게 확장되고 복잡하게 얽혀가고 있다. 특히 미디어의 발달로 대중매체에 쏟아지는 다양한 이미지의 자극과 감당할 수 없는 양의 정보의 범람은 인간이 수용할 수 있는 범위를 넘어섰다. 이러한 기술의 발달로 사회가 빠르게 변화하면서 인간은 현대 도시의 생존 경쟁 속에서 살아가게 되었고, 살아 남기 위해 자신의 의식구조와 가치관을 과감하게 변화시키게 된다. 즉, 현대사회가 인간의 뜻에 따라 움직여지는 것이 아니라 인간이 사회의 메카니즘 속에 말려들어 지배당하는 상황이 벌어지고 있는 것이다. 이에 따라 인간은 자기의 개성과 인간성을 상실하고 흔들리게 되며, 소외를 경험하게 되고, 현대인들은 익명의 '대중'으로 살아갈 수밖에 없게 되었다. 본인은 현대 사회라는 거대하고도 복잡한 현실, 특히 TV, 광고 등 미디어의 영향에 따른 인간 소외 현상에 주목하여 현대인들의 익명성(匿名性), 모호성을 표현함으로써 정체성-주체성을 잃어버린 자아-의 문제를 드러내고자 한다. 오늘날 사회는 다국적 자본주의 시대로 국가뿐만 아니라 기업 역시 관료주의가 지배하고 있어 자신의 개성을 표현하기보다는 타인 지향적인 성향을 드러내게 된다. 뿐만 아니라 대부분의 현대인은 가치있는 하나의 상품이 되기 위해 자신의 이미지를 사회가 요구하는 틀에 맞추려고 노력한다. 이러한 과정에서 사람들은 자신의 의식과 욕구가 높아지는데 비해 경제적 조건이나 소득이 따라가지 못하게 되면 행동의 분열 현상이 일어나게 된다. 그럼으로써 현실과 이상간의 거리는 더욱 멀어져 욕구불만의 강도는 상대적으로 커가게 되며 타인 지향적 성향을 강하게 드러냄에 따라 주체적 책임이 없는, 주체성을 상실한 현대인으로서 자신의 정체성이 모호한 존재가 된다. 이렇게 자아(self)나 주체(subject)나 개인의 사유를 인정받지 못하는 '주체의 죽음'은 바로 현대인을 익명적 존재로 바라볼 수 있으며 이로 인해 인간은 실존적 허무와 무의미감으로 고통받게 된다. 본인은 소비사회의 여러 가지 요소들이 현대인을 타자 지향적인 인간으로 만들고 전체 구조에 종속되어 자아, 주체를 상실하고 분열되는 현대 사회를 재현한다. 익명적 존재로서의 현대인을 검은색 실루엣으로 표현하여 개인의 특성이 드러나지 않게 하며 사진 작품에서는 얼굴이나 신체를 뿌옇게-out of focus- 찍어서 유령과 같은 이미지로 가볍고 나약하며 흔들리는 듯한 존재로 표현하였다. 이것은 사회와 그것을 재현하는 본인과의 관계에서 개인의 내적, 주관적인 체험을 바탕으로 표현한 것으로 재현되어지는 대상-익명적 현대인-과의 관계에서 본인의 상대적인 위치를 확인하고 본래적 자아를 찾는 자기 성찰적 자화상이라 할 수 있다. 따라 본인 작업은 현대 도시의 생존 경쟁 속에서 살아가는 인간의 존재를 다양한 방법으로 객관화함으로서 현재의 사회상을 재현하여 인간의 실존과 인간 가치의 의미를 되돌아보고 그 속에서 자신의 정체성을 확립하고자함이 작업의 중요한 목적이라 할 수 있겠다.;From the historical point of view, a work of art could be considered as something upon which the era to which an artist belongs is reflected with originality through emotional and visual languages. In addition, to obtain its intrinsic value and property, a work of art should possess its own viewpoint peculiar both to itself and to its artist. In other words, an artist starts with his or her work, having such questions as What to see? and How to see? which play a significant role in determining the direction and the characteristic of the work. Therefore, the diversified and complicated expression found in modern art represents the reality where the contemporary art requires various and complex visions to grasp the modern society. However, it must be taken into consideration that What to see? does not mean the focused attention toward the answer to this question, but more precisely the question in itself is the goal of the process in which an artist seeks for his or her identity. I begin to take steps toward my works with a couple of questions like How to see the modern society? and What to see and how to express? Yet, these are not designed to analyze and criticize the problems that the modern society is faced with. The two questions not only describe the spiritual aspect of what I have thought of in finding out myself but also my endeavor to discover myself in the real-life situations that I am in and lots of relationship with those around me, which aims at looking around the surroundings first. In the contemporary society, everything is expanding rapidly and getting mixed up. Particularly, as mass media progress, the provocation of countless images on the mass media and the flood of immense information have already exceeded the human capacity. As the society changes fast based on this kind of technological advance, people are forced to live in the competition for survival in present-day cities, and in order to survive, they have to reshape their way of thinking and sense of values dramatically. In other words, it is clear that the modern society does not move and function with respect to the human needs, but the humans are controlled and dominated by the social mechanism. As a result, people cannot stand upright losing their own personality and humanity, and experience isolation; and, they have to live just as anonymous public now. I intend to bring up the problem of individuals who are deprived of their identity and independence by noticing the human isolation caused by the modern society, especially the influence of the mass media such as TV and advertisement, and expressing the anonymity and the ambiguity of the moderns. The primary purpose of my works is to depict phases of life, look back on the human existence and its meaning, and establish my own identity through this process by objectifying the life of men and women living in the survival competition of todays metropolis.
