길버트와 조지(Gilbert & George)의 예술 세계에 나타난 댄디즘(Dandyism)

Abstract

The concept of dandyism formed in 19th centuries is equivalent to dandy s attitude showing off their spiritual superiority over snobbish bourgeois who were given to refined dress and graceful manner. Dandyism in modern times is generally used for describing proud loneliness of artist or spiritual aristocratism so this word is often used to indicate artists with free spirit who refuse to adapt themselves to current system. These aspect of dandyism can be summarized into self revelation motivated by desire to make oneself conspicuous in outer world and maintaining distance between oneself and outer world for close observation on the world in which one lives. Gilbert and George, the modern artist, have been seeking after the art that can communicate with general public on the subject of universal and objective life of human. The scope of the theme featured in their works includes all values regardless of their location in value table and they handled the questions of value on neutral ground apart from existent preconceived notion. The author who continued to appear in their works with striking distinction of other characters in them soon becomes startling feature in the form of their works. But their works include vagueness that general audience can t easily understand, which may be resulted in contradiction to author s original intention of pursuing art that is easily communicable. The factor that contribute to the vagueness of their works is that rearranged and transformed image at author s own discretion, though all images are concrete and realistic processed through photo, metaphor and symbol implied in the title and image of works. This study was motivated from the curiosity about estrangement between author s intention and audience s understanding in their works and was undertaken with due consideration of the fact that no much academic research has been made comparing with their reputation in the history of art. So this study mainly aims at clarifying their world of art and attempted to discuss the feature of dandyism appeared in their(Gilbert and George) works. If we try to understand dandyism and approach their works based on it, it would be possible for us to realize that their works come closer to us and narrow the distance between author s position(to communicate with audience) and audience s standpoint. ; 19세기에 생성된 댄디즘의 개념은 세련된 복장과 몸가짐으로 속물적인 부르주아에 대한 정신적 우월함을 은연중에 과시하는 댄디의 태도를 의미했다. 현대의 댄디즘은 일반적으로 정신의 귀족주의, 예술가의 고고한 자부심 등으로 통용됨으로써, 주로 체제에 순응하지 않는 자유로운 정신을 소유한 예술가에게 해당하는 용어가 되었다. 이러한 댄디즘의 양상은 구별된 모습으로 자신을 외부로 드러내고자 하는 자기 현시성과 세상을 냉정하게 관찰하기 위한 거리두기의 태도로 요약해 볼 수 있다. 현대 미술가 길버트와 조지는 인간의 보편적이고 객관적인 삶을 주제로 대중과 소통할 수 있는 예술을 추구해왔다. 그들이 다루었던 주제의 범위는 하위나 상위에 위치한 모든 가치를 포함하고 있는데, 그들은 이러한 가치 문제들을 기존의 선입견과 거리를 두면서 가치 중립적인 것으로 다루었다. 또한 다른 등장 인물들과 구별된 모습으로 작품 속에 등장하는 작가 도상은 그들만의 독특한 형식적 특징을 이루게 되었다. 그러나 그들의 작품에는 관람자가 명확하게 이해할 수 없는 모호함이 있는데, 그것의 원인으로는 작품 속의 모든 형상이 사진 매체를 이용한 구체적이며 사실적인 이미지이지만 작가의 임의대로 재배열된 것이고 변형된 것이라는 점과, 작품의 제목과 이미지가 은유와 상징성을 내포하고 있다는 점등을 들 수 있다. 이러한 요소들은 작가가 비록 소통의 예술을 추구하지만, 관람자의 입장에서 본 그들의 작품이 명확하게 이해될 수 없는 난해함으로 작용하고 있다. 본 연구는 작가의 의도와 관람객의 이해 사이에 존재하는 괴리감에 대한 호기심에서 비롯되었으며, 미술사내에서 그 동안 작가의 명성에 비해 그들에 관한 학술적인 연구가 되어있지 않았던 점을 감안하여 시도된 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 그들의 예술 세계를 좀 더 명확히 할 것을 목표로 하고, 이를 위해 길버트와 조지의 예술 작품에 나타난 댄디즘의 특성을 논의하고자 한다. 댄디즘을 이해하고 그들의 작품을 댄디즘적인 것으로 해석할 때, 작가의 예술 세계는 좀 더 확연해 질 수 있고, 이를 통해 관람객과 소통하고자 하는 작가의 입장과 그럴 수 없는 관람자의 입장 사이의 괴리감을 좁힐 수 있음을 본문에서 확인할 수 있을 것이다.
