Abstract
; The flow of nature affects the method of our lives. Human beings are influenced by the changes in nature and they have different images of how they would like to compose their lives. Here, we must consider the fact that time changes our requirements and preferences. Human beings constantly strive to meet their ideal. Artists experiment with this concept. So humans are attracted to the beauty of nature and they are inspired by it. Artists translate such inspiration into their work. The innermost psyche is expressed in their work. Through civilization, humans have become trapped in the language, art, mythical symbolism, religion and the society that they have created. They live their lives trying to escape these different boundaries. Furthermore, each of their actions and preferences symbolize their character. For this study, research was done on the lotus. Since the ancient times, the lotus has been a religious symbol, associated with Buddhism. It is also a part of nature that is closely related to our lives. Here, it has been examined to be expressed in clay with all its meanings. Its historical background was taken into consideration and then its different forms were closely observed. The organic shapes of the lotus leaves, stems and flowers were transformed into clay pieces. Different shapes required different skills in making. The pieces were coiled, wheel thrown and slip-cast depending on the forms. The celadon clay body, a stoneware clay body and a porcelain clay body were used. Different colour glazes and slips were used. The glazes were sprayed and dipped depending on the effect. The first firing was for 8 hours in a 1.5㎥ gas kiln. It reached a temperature of 900ºc. The second firing oxidized at 1250ºc and it was fired for 9 hours. People interpret images differently. Through this study I have touched the very basic aspects of symbolizing a chosen object. Nature holds incessant possibilities therefore, one needs to experiment with them. The lotus too holds many expressions and this study has endeavored to show some of them.
