Abstract
Since the end of the 20th century, many countries have used human resources to let them grow further and take a huge leap to adapt themselves to a rapidly changing world as the countries phased into a new information technology era, a cultural turning point in the modern world. Korea is no exception. Not to be outdone, the Korean government has been focusing on strengthening policies in the field of art, such as design, culture and other similar art-related policies. Despite all of this effort, art education in middle and high schools in Korea has been somewhat abandoned just because art education in schools does not seem to be conducive enough for students in getting into a university. The 7th newly-revised educational curriculum even stipulates that hours spent in art subject in the middle and high schools are curtailed at some rates. As a matter of fact, senior students in public high-schools wanting to apply for art-major in universities, except the ones in art-specializing private high schools, have nowhere to go to receive art-education other than their schools to get them through university entrance exams. Due to changes in curriculum, art private institutes have inevitably turned into major educational instruments, a compulsory course for prospect art major students, not merely as subordinated social educational institutes as previously thought. This research is designed to look into how the prospect art-major students are preparing themselves for the university admission exams, what role the public schools and private art institutes play for art education and, for how much impact do they have on the students. And the research is about to conclude where the public school and private institutes should be heading for a desirable art-education. Based on this work, schools and private institutes would hopefully be able to cooperate to pursue a sound educational ideal by nurturing creative artists in the future ahead. At first, I analyzed university admission test system for art-majors year by year, looked over what curriculum the public schools and private institutes keep applying and used them to cite as examples of this major research. And I conducted a poll on how seniors in high schools prepare themselves for the university admission tests. The polls targeted each 200 seniors totally to see if how much education methods in schools and private institutes are different and to what extent those 2 education methods have impact on students, after dividing respondents into 2 groups, one in public high schools and art-specializing private high schools and the other in private institutes. To put this in another way, the respondents were categorized into two groups, the one who relied only on their own schools for preparing for university entrance exams, and the other who got extensive educational courses through various private institutes for the same purposes. I suggested where the schools for art-education should be going, and how private art institutes should change from now on based on this poll. The result of the research is followed. Since the educational reform in 1995 being taken into effect, many universities have been adopting many different kinds of art performance tests up to this point. As a result, majority students in public schools and even other private art-specializing schools have responded that they have been going to several private art institutes as well at the thought that education in schools only would not be enough for the admission tests. Most of students in public high schools are said to be going to private institutes because they have no other chances in getting art educations without institutes. Majority of them are female students, and they spend 4-5 hours a day, 5 times a week learning practical art-performance skills in the institutes. They are said to pay more than 400 ~ 500 thousand won for this. During 2 months right after scholastic Assessment test, more than 82.5% of respondents in the poll said that they spend more than 10 hours a day, more than 6 times a week learning the required skills, before getting into the universities. Majority of respondents were hoping to get a job in the field of design or other similar ones. Those who relied on school only for preparation are said to have chosen mostly ‘general art’, when compared to those who also went to private institutes. And the former ones are said that they have experienced broader art field in person, and they tend to take an entrance exam in more stable mood, comparing to their counterparts. Private institutes take up most of educations that public and private high schools do not afford to implement. Teachers in institutes, rather than the ones in schools, make a more direct impact on students. 86% of respondents said that they think the time and cost they spend for preparation are too much, and 84% of them said the current university-admission tests for art-major should be definitely changed. For the education method in schools being normalized, I suggest that university admission tests for art-major should be changed in the way that the tests can evaluate students’ performance more efficiently, and education methods in special art schools should be strengthened to regain their lost part to the private institutes. For private institutes’ part, they should put more efforts to employ more professional teachers with good personalities, and at the same time they should develop new educational programs to nurture students’ creativities. Just like requirements to teachers in schools, the ones in the institutes as well should take their responsibilities and should definitely know what they are teaching to students. The institutes should be transparent and always be reminded of they are accounting for much parts in art educations in Korea. Not only parents and art teachers but also university authorities, contemporary artists, Industry’s leader creating and developing various kinds of visual media, and private art institutes altogether should hopefully communicate well enough for better art education, and should take a leading role in nurturing creative artists and pursing a desirable education by reflecting on themselves, and discussing in an extensive and comprehensive way.
