현대 미국의 아시아계 여성 미술과 탈식민 여성주의

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 미국의 아시아계 여성 미술과 미술가에 대한 연구이다. 미국 미술계에서 아시아계 여성들은 오랫동안 창작의 주체로 인식되지 못하였으며 아시아계 여성 미술가들이 본격적으로 모습을 드러내기 시작한 것은 1980년대 후반에 들어서이다. 본 논문에서는 어떻게 아시아계 여성이 특정한 시기에 미국 미술계에서 창작의 주체로 부상하는가하는 문제가 연구되었다. 특히 이 기간에 출현한 대표적인 다섯 명의 여성 미술가, 차학경(Theresa Hak Kyung Cha), 민영순(Yong Soon Min), 토미에 아라이(Tomie Arai), 헝 리우(Hung Liu), 한티 팜(Hanh Thi Pham)을 중심으로 현대 아시아계 여성 미술의 형성 초기에 제기된 주요 쟁점들을 분석하고 그와 관련된 문제점들이 논의되었다. 그리고 그런 연구를 위한 이론적 틀로 탈식민 여성주의 관점을 적용하였다. 탈식민 여성주의 관점은 아시아계 여성 미술을 고찰하는 데 중요한 틀을 제공하는데, 그 이유는 다음의 네 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 미국 미술계에서 아시아계 여성 미술가들이 창작의 주체로 출현하게 되는 과정이 왜 정치적인 맥락 속에서 이루어 질 수 밖에 없었는지를 규명할 수 있게 해 준다. 둘째, 만일 아시아계 여성 주체가 정치적인 상황에서 출현할 수 밖에 없다면 그와 같은 주체 의식은 작품의 내용이나 미학과 어떤 상관 관계를 맺는가를 밝혀 준다. 셋째, 미국의 아시아 여성들의 삶이 제국 내에서 발생하는 미국의 성/인종차별주의와 내부적 환치의 경험 뿐만 아니라 아시아 국가와 구미의 역사적이며 지정학적 관계에 의해 지속적으로 영향을 받아왔음을 드러내 준다. 마지막으로 탈식민 여성주의의 관점은 아시아계 여성 미술과 서구 여성주의 미술의 관계를 숙고하게 해 준다. 본 논문은 다섯 개의 장으로 나뉘며, 제 1장에서는 탈식민 여성주의 이론과 미술 실천의 전개과정이 검토되었다. 이어지는 네 개의 장은 미국의 아시아계 여성의 역사와 그들에 관한 스테레오타입, 섹슈얼리티와 이중 정체성이라는 네 개의 독립된 주제로 구성된다. 각 장의 주제는 탈식민 여성학 이론과 아시아계 여성 미술이 만나는 주요한 쟁점들로서 그 주제에 대한 아시아계 여성 미술가들의 인식과 관련된 주제를 재현한 작품들의 분석으로 이루어진다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 한국의 서양미술사 연구가 서구를 여전히 근대 서구로 간주하는 상황에서 서구 속의 동양과 아시아에 주목함으로써 근대 서구의 보편주의에 의해 가려져 온 서구 내부의 차이를 드러내고 서구를 새롭게 조명하는 것이다. 미국에서 활동하는 아시아계 여성 미술가들의 작업을 탈식민 여성주의 관점에서 조명한 본 연구가 그들 뿐만 아니라 현재 세계 각지에 흩어져 활동하고 있는 수많은 한국계 여성 미술가들을 이해할 수 있는 하나의 틀을 제공할 수 있으리라 기대된다. ; This dissertation focuses on contemporary Asian American women artists residing in the United States. The work of Asian American women had not been considered a suitable subject for male-dominated art histories until these artists emerged on the American art scene in the late 1980s. This study examines how the emergence of Asian American women artists as a subject has been realized due to their particular moment in history and the central issues raised by these artists during the formative stages of their careers. The discussion focuses on five artists, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha(1953-), Hung Liu(1948-), Tomie Arai(1949-), Yong Soon Min(1953-), and Hanh Thi Pham(1956-) and applies a postcolonial feminist perspective as the theoretical framework to explore their work. Applying a postcolonial feminist approach to the study of Asian American women artists and their work raises four complex topics for discussion. First, this methodology reveals how the subjectivity of Asian American women artists is constructed within their sociopolitical context. Second, the artists understanding of their subjectivity and their work is discussed in terms of both content and aesthetics. Third, this approach reveals how the self-consciousness of the artists as "Asian American women" has been greatly influenced by their experience of colonization and displacement within an imperialist context as well as the geopolitical relations of the United States and Asia. Fourth, it makes clear the relations of Asian American women artists and diverse feminist art movements. Divided into five chapters, the first chapter examines postcolonial feminist theory, the development of a feminist interpretation of race, and the concept of postcolonialism in the American art world. The next four chapters discuss the writing of history, stereotypes, sexuality, and identity, which are main issues overlapped postcolonial feminism and Asian American women s art. By considering the differences between Asia and the West, this dissertation illuminates the subjectivity of Asian American artists, which has long been neglected due to the presumed universality of western Modernism. In Korea, for example, current studies of art history still consider the West as the Modern West. Under the circumstances, this study not only suggests a new way of approaching Asian American women s art but also a way of understanding the work of numerous Korean women artists living in various parts of the globe.
