비비안 웨스트우드 디자인 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is first to produce various methods to express in the contemporary fashion demanding diversity by studying the design trend of Vivienne Westwood, the famous Avan-garde fashion designer of British, and the aesthetic characters from 1980's to nowadays, 2005, and second to make Avan-garde's methods to express the real creative design. Based on previous study, the study referred to literatures, UK collection magazines, pictures and internet sites for studying the design trend, the expression methods and specific characters. Based on the researches, I designed and formed clothes for presenting westwood's design characters. The Vivienne Westwood's design trend is divided into four eras. The early 1980's, The 'Punk and Ethnic Style' ear was a important period that Westwood outstandingly worked as a designer who presented aspects of Retrogressive Utopia- nostalgia of natural and un-civilizations in ills of modern society - prefering to go back to primitive world by reinventing renewal materials from the history of the third world and Europeans. In the mid-1980's, The 'Feminine Style' ear is studied feminine fitting that makes women strong through feminine ways, the corset and crinoline of the past is reinvented to match with contemporary finality. The 1990's, The 'Eclectic Style' era is consciously incorporated the elements she had absorbed through studies about literature and art, she newly presented the love of art and interests about the extreme feminine form through the cutting, fabric, detail. The 2000's, The 'Retrospective Style' era is retro that returned punk sensitivity of the 1980's. What she studied was not waist and hip but methods to have spaces between body and cloth. Particularly, Westwood continued to explore the myraid of ways fabric can fold over the body, and accomplished dynamic fashions that can give a body freely movements. The aesthetic characters of Vivienne Westwood's design vastly divided into Parody and the Punk Couture. Westwood enjoyed Parody that reconstructed the past with critique perspective and recreated new costumes. Westwood's parody is exprssed by british materials, that is traditional British tailoring(British uniform), dressmaking techniques(Dior's grey suit), traditional British fabrics(harris tweed, tartan) and her debt to the past(art genre- art and historical costume-corset and crinoline). British materials in Westwood Style had newness through parody that expresses paradox and irony, derision and disdain. Also Westwood has presented the special character of Punk Couture showing Punk-Style clothes by applying Couture sense to her own Pre＾t a´ Porter Collection. She expressed deconstructive image through destroy and creation of existing system, that is diverse cutting and cordy of haute couture and details of punk sense. Especially, She pursued newness breaking the conventional aesthetic consciousness through her cutting, mix and match of fabrics and cordy of punk details. Thus, Westwood pursued new aesthetics by deconstruction and destruction regulated existing ideas that had been systematized, conventionalized and standardized by history and culture. She had shown pluralistic fashion through her design that exactly reflected characteristics of the modern society demanding variety. On the bases of the result of this studying, I designed this works with two concepts of "New Volume" and "Neo Avan-garde" of Westwood's aesthetic characters. "New Volume" expressed dynamic fashions using modification of sock's fabric and achievement of volume using fold and pleat. "Neo Avan-garde" expressed one-piece using asymmetric cutting, piping, slit and fold with crumpled masculine shirt of cotton fabric to show images decontructing the fixed ideas by presenting the experiment of postmodernism. This study aimed at helping to understand the modern fashion with complexity and variety: it treated wholly Westwood's design, and applied to diverse methods approaching to design.;본 연구는 1980년대 이후부터 현재(2005년)까지 영국의 대표적인 아방가르드 디자이너 비비안 웨스트우드의 디자인 경향과 그 미적 특성을 연구하여, 다양성을 요구하는 현대 패션에 다양한 표현 방법을 제공하고 웨스트우드의 아방가르드적 표현 방법을 실제로 창작 디자인으로 시도하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 선행 연구를 토대로 디자인 경향과 디자인의 표현 방법 및 특성을 연구하기 위해 문헌자료, 영국의 컬렉션 등 패션 잡지, 시각자료, 인터넷 사이트 자료 등을 참고로 했다. 위의 연구를 토대로 웨스트우드의 디자인 특성을 나타내는 의상을 창작 디자인하여 실물로 제작했다. 비비안 웨스트우드의 작품 경향은 4시기로 구분된다. 1980년대 초 'Punk & Ethnic Style' 시기는 디자이너로 단독으로 활동하게 되는 중요한 시기로, 제 3세계와 유럽의 역사에서 빌려온 것들을 새롭게 재창조하여 현대 사회의 병페 속에서 자연과 비문명 세계에 대한 향수, 즉 원시적 세계로 돌아가고픈 퇴보적 유토피아의 양상을 나타내었다. 1980년대 중반 'Feminine Style' 시기는 여성적인 방법을 통해 여성을 강하게 하는 여성적인 피팅에 대해 연구하여, 과거의 코르셋과 크리놀린을 현대의 목적성에 맞게 재발명하였다. 1990년대 'Eclectic Style' 시기는 문학과 미술에 대한 연구를 통해 얻은 많은 요소들을 절충시켜, 회화에 대한 사랑과 극단적인 여성의 형에 대한 관심을 커팅, 패브릭, 디테일 등을 통해 새롭게 나타내었다. 2000년대 'Retrospective Style' 시기는 1980년대의 펑크적 감성으로 되돌아간 복고풍으로, 허리와 가슴이 아닌 신체와 패브릭 사이의 공간성을 주기 위한 방법들, 특히 패브릭을 바디 위에서 접을 수 있는 무수한 방법들을 탐구하여 신체의 자유로운 움직임을 줄 수 있는 역동적인 패션을 성취했다. 비비안 웨스트우드 디자인의 미적특성은 크게 패러디와 쿠튀르 펑크로 나타났다. 웨스트우드는 비평적인 시각으로 과거를 재구성하여 새로운 복식을 창조하는 패러디를 즐겼다. 웨스트우드의 패러디는 영국적임을 나타내는 소재, 즉 영국의 전통적인 테일러링(특히, 영국의 유니폼), 드레스메이킹 기술(디오르의 그레이 슈트), 영국의 전통적인 소재(해리스 트위드, 타탄), 과거 양식의 차용(회화 등의 예술 양식과 크리놀린, 코르셋, 버슬 등의 역사 복식) 등을 통해 표현되었다. 즉 웨스트우드적인 영국적 소재는 패러독스와 아이러니, 조롱, 경멸 등을 표현하는 패러디에 의해서 새로움을 얻었다. 또한 웨스트우드는 자신의 프레타 포르테 컬렉션에 퀴튀르적인 감각을 가져와 펑크풍의 의상을 보여주는 펑크 쿠튀르의 특성을 보였다. 오트 쿠튀르의 풍요로운 재단법이나 코디와 세부장식에 펑크 감각을 수용하는 즉, 기존 질서의 파괴와 창조라는 행위를 통해 해체주의적인 이미지를 표현하였다. 특히 웨스트우드는 재단, 소재의 믹스 앤 매치, 펑크적인 요소의 코디를 통해 기존의 미의식을 깨는 새로움을 추구했다. 웨스트우드는 역사적 · 문화적으로 체계화, 관습화, 정형화된 기존의 관념들을 해체시키고 파괴함으로서 새로운 미를 추구했다. 다양성을 요구하는 현대 사회의 특성을 정확하게 반영한 디자인을 통해 다원적인 패션을 보여주었다. 이상의 연구 결과를 토대로, 웨스트우드 디자인의 미적 특성을 "New Volume"과 "Neo Avant-garde"의 두 가지 이미지로 디자인했다. "New Volume"은 양말 소재의 변용과 주름을 이용한 볼륨의 성취를 통해 역동적인 패션을 표현했다. "Neo Avant-garde"는 포스트모더니즘의 실험성을 나타내어 기존의 고정관념을 해체하는 이미지를 나타내고자 바로 세탁한 느낌의 구겨진 면 소재의 남성의 셔츠를 사용하여 비대칭적인 컷, 파이핑, 절개 등과 주름을 이용해 원피스를 표현하였다. 본 연구는 웨스트우드 디자인을 포괄적으로 다루어, 디자인에 접근하는 다양한 방법들을 연구하고 그 중의 몇 가지 표현 방법을 디자인에 실천하는 것으로 복잡하고 다양한 현대 패션을 이해하는데 도움이 되고자 한다.
