Aaron Copland의 초기가곡에 관한 연구

Abstract

아론 코플란드(Aaron Copland 1900~1990)는 20세기 미국의 대표적인 작곡가중 한사람으로써, 아이브스(Charles Ives 1874~1954), 톰슨(Virgil Thomson 1896~1989)과 함께 미국의 20세기 음악을 이끌어온 장본인이다. 당시 미국 음악사회에서 그들이 사용한 음악기법은 매우 놀라운 것으로 받아들여졌는데, 특히 코플란드는 재즈, 신고전주의, 무조형식 그리고 미국 내의 여러 부족의 음악인 민속음악을 통하여 미국에서만 찾아볼 수 있는 고유한 특징을 발전시키고자 하였다. 그의 가곡은 총 43곡이며 옛 미국노래(Old American songs)의 10곡과 에밀리 디킨슨의 시에 의한 12곡(Emily Dickinson's twelve poems)을 포함한다. 본 논문에서 다룬 5곡의 가곡을 통하여 살펴본 내용은 다음과 같다. 그의 성악작품은 재즈의 영향을 받아 당김음 리듬을 빈번하게 사용하였으며, 조성의 기초만을 남겨둔 채 형식을 파괴시켜서 불협화음과 복조성을 자유롭게 사용하였다. 또한 3·4도 음정과 그것의 전위음정인 5·6도 음정을 선율과 화성에 즐겨 사용하였으며, 성악선율에서는 흔히 나타나지 않는 7·9·11도의 도약을 통하여 곡의 클라이막스, 또는 특정 가사를 강조하였다. 또한 그의 작품들은 각 곡마다의 개성이 뚜렷하며, 클라이막스는 존재하지만 전체적으로 무겁고 강한 노래는 없다. 그는 특정 시인을 선호하지 않고 여러 시인들의 시로 가곡을 작곡했으며, 시인의 노래(Poet's Song)에서는 시를 분절배치시킨 커밍스(E. E. Cummings)의 시를 통하여 가사의 의미를 쉽게 파악하지 못하게 하는 특이한 시도도 하였다. 이와 같은 코플란드의 다양한 시도는 20세기 미국음악의 선두주자로서의 역할과 후대의 여러 작곡가들에게 큰 영향을 미치고 있다.;Aaron Copland(1990~1990) is the representative American composer of the 20th Century and is the very man who has led the 20th Century American Music along with Charles Ives and Virgil Thomson. At the time, the musical technique used by these composers were received as very remarkable in the American music circles. In particular, Copland tried to develop the native characteristics found only in America through Jazz, Neo-classicism, atonal music form, and folk music of various native tribes in America. He composed a total of 43 songs of which 10 songs are old American songs and twelve poems of Emily Dickinson. In this thesis, I have looked over 5 songs among early songs of Copland. His early songs were influenced by Jazz, frequently used syncopated rhythm, and freely used dissonance and bitonality by destroying the form which only left the foundation of tonality. Also, he enjoyed using third. fourth interval and fifth. sixth intervals which is the advant-garde inversion, with melody and chords, and emphasized particular lyrics or climax of the song through the skip of seventh·ninth·eleventh interval which is uncommon in vocal melody. Furthermore, each of his works have their own distinct characteristics. And from an overall point of view, although climax exists, there are no heavy or powerful songs. He did not prefer any particular poet and composed songs using various poems by numerous poets. In "Poet's Song", through the poem by E. E. Cummings which split and arranged the poem into many pieces, he engaged in an unique attempt to confuse the listener so that he or she wouldn't easily understand the meaning of the lyrics. Likewise, these diverse attempts of Copland are greatly influencing numerous composers of future generations and his role as the leader of 20th Century American Music.
