퍼포먼스 공연 중 서커스 음악의 기능적 측면에 대한 연구

Abstract

As we move into the twenty first century, there has been an increase of public interest in the field of performance arts, and consequently, circus has also been gaining popularity. Although in the past, circus has beenknown more for its childish entertainment, with its clown acts and animal tricks, not anymore. It has come to take its place as a genuine performance art, thanks largely to the development of digital technology that provides graphics, lighting, stage settings, music, and sound effects. As society became more complex through time, so has the taste of the masses. And in efforts to meet their needs, circus has changed from a stunt-oriented show to a story-oriented one that requires music, sound effects, lights, singers, costumes, and other elements, helping the performers to capture the hearts of the audience. Music has especially gained importance in the act. It not only embellishes the physical movements, but also sets the mood, shows the psychological state of the characters, and even tells the story itself, where as in the past, it had been limited only to decorate the background. In the department of sound effects, the development of new and complex sounds have allowed the stage to come alive for the audience, making it all the more realistic. Firstly, Quidam, a performance piece played by the world renown group, Cirque du Soleil, will be reviewed in this paper. It is a piece that Cirque du Soleil is most famous for, and with its consideration, we will also discuss the role that music plays in the developmentand evolution of the circus. Secondly, we will touch on the life and works of Benoit Jutras, the composer and musical director of Cirque du Soleil. Going back to Quidam, we shall see how the structure of music complements the flow of the story and how the sound effects support it. The relationship between music and the movements of the acrobats will also be looked at. Lastly, there will be a general analyzation of Quidam, finally relating the effects of music and sound to the art of circus. According to the research, the following are the musical characteristics of Quidam. Firstly, unlike the traditional circus, music plays a much bigger role, along with songs, movements, story lines, and acting. Music is what dictates the flow of the entire show, helping the audience to not lose focus. It especially bridges the changing scenes together effectively. Music also gives meaning to the scenes through its control of the flow and the tempo. Not only so, but it also helps to express the physical movements of the actors along with the background music. The play itself reveals a consistent theme through out the story, and within the theme, the story unfolds with different performances. The opening and the closing music reflect the one theme, and different kinds of music are included in the different performances in the middle to support them. Fourthly, the music helps the act to move away from the traditional light, fun nature of circus to provide a mysterious and melodramatic mood by using the key of minor. It also contributes by allowing the audience to get into the emotions that the characters produce. Lastly, the sound effects, optimally used in the right places, produce a unique and fulfilling sensation with its electronic feel coming from the synthesizers. As the circus act progresses, music is used to lead the audience in getting into the mood of the story and staying focused. And the sound effects complement the music. In recent years, there have been much technological developments. We now witness on stage the same digital tools that were once only seen on television and in the movies. And all these additions are bringing circus back to life as a whole new brand of performance art. Therefore, we conclude that there must be more knowledge and continual research in the role of music in performance art, in order that the development and improvement of circus and performance music in general may not cease.;21세기에 들어서면서 공연문화의 관심이 확대되어짐에 따라 공연문화의 한 장르인 서커스(Circus)에 대한 관심도 늘고 있다. 마당놀이나 광대극, 동물의 재주 등으로 단순한 웃음을 자아냈던 서커스가 예술적인 면모를 갖춰 무대 공연의 한 장르로 부각되어지기까지는 디지털(Digital) 기술의 발전에 따른 그래픽(Graphic)영상, 조명, 무대장치 그리고 음악과 사운드 이펙트(Sound effect) 등 기술을 동반한 멀티미디어의 발달이 큰 역할을 하였다. 초기의 서커스는 관객들에게 묘기를 보여주는 것을 주요 관점으로 하였으나, 사회가 복잡해져 가고 새로운 요소를 추구하는 관객들의 욕구를 충족해감에 따라 스토리(Story)가 가미되었고, 상황이나 분위기 등을 묘사하는 데에 음악, 음향, 조명, 보컬(Vocal), 의상 등의 다른 외적 요소들이 공연자와 관객들의 교감 형성을 위한 매체로 중요한 역할을 하게 되었다. 특히 음악적인 요소가 중요한 부분을 차지하게 되었는데 기존의 서커스에서는 음악이 배경음악 형태로 머물렀었다면, 최근에는 단지 몸을 움직이는 기계적인 동작을 위해서 뿐 아니라 분위기 묘사, 등장인물의 심리 묘사, 심지어 스토리를 말해주는 역할까지도 감당하게 되었다. 그리고 기존에는 표현하기 힘들었던 다양한 음악적 사운드 이펙트(Sound Effect)들이 표현되면서 무대공연에 있어서의 현장감을 더욱 살릴 수 있게 되었으며, 무대의 크기가 확장되는 효과도 가져오게 되었다. 본 연구에서는 공연예술에서 불가분의 관계인 음악의 중요성에 대해 고찰해보며, 공연예술의 한 장르인 서커스에서 음악의 기능적인 측면에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저 현재 세계 여러 나라를 순회하며 가장 활발히 활동하고 있는 서커스단인 “태양의 서커스단(Cirque du soleil)”의 퍼포먼스(Performance) 중 그들의 대표적 작이며 다른 작품들보다 이국적 색채가 짙으면서도 대중성이 높았던 <퀴담(Quidam)>을 선정하여 서커스의 발달사에 있어서 서커스 음악의 현 위치와 발전 방향을 모색하였다. 그리고 “태양의 서커스단”에서 음악 감독이자 작곡자인 ‘베노잇 쥬트라스(Benoit Jutras)’의 생애와 작품세계에 대해서 알아보았으며, <퀴담>의 스토리 전개에 따른 음악의 구성 형식과 음향적 측면, 아크로바트(acrobat)들의 동작과 음악과의 상호관계도 분석해 보았다. 마지막으로 <퀴담>을 종합적으로 분석해봄으로 여러 공연예술의 형태 중 서커스(Circus) 공연에서 음악의 역할과 음악이나 음향효과가 작품에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 <퀴담>에서 나타나는 작품의 음악적 특징을 요약해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일반적으로 인식해 왔던 서커스 공연과는 달리 노래, 동작, 줄거리, 연기 등이 어우러진 종합 예술 형태로 음악이 많은 비중을 차지하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 공연의 전체적인 흐름이 음악을 통해 자연스럽게 연결되어 관객들의 집중이 흐트러지지 않도록 작품이 진행되었다. 특히 각 장면이 바뀔 때마다의 브릿지(Bridge) 역할을 음악적으로 잘 이끌어내고 있었다. 둘째, 음악은 동작을 표현하는 데에 있어 배경음악 역할을 담당함과 동시 흐름이나 템포 등의 음악적 내용들이 공연 전체를 이끌어갈 때 중요한 의미를 부여하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 공연의 구성은 전체적으로 하나의 주제를 세워 그 안에서 스토리를 부과하고, 그 스토리 안에서 각각 개별적인 내용의 퍼포먼스를 이끌어 가는 형식을 취하고 있었다. 오프닝(Opening) 음악과 엔딩(Ending) 음악에서 전체적인 스토리의 내용을 함축하고 있었고, 중간의 퍼포먼스들에서는 각각 그 공연의 분위기에 어울리는 음악들이 나타났다. 넷째, 일반적으로 서커스라고 할 때 떠올랐던 흥겹고 밝은 분위기를 벗어나서 신비하면서도 서글픈 애환을 담은 듯 한 분위기를 만들고, 신체를 이용한 묘기를 보이기까지의 어려운 순간을 표현하는 듯 단조(Minor) 조성을 주로 사용하였다. 또한 관객들과 공연자가 서로 일체감을 가지고 공연이 진행되는 데에 부족함 없이 분위기를 잘 이끌어주는 역할을 감당하고 있었다. 마지막으로 음향 효과가 적절하게 잘 사용되어 공연의 흐름과 음악적 표현을 돕는 역할을 하였으며 음색은 신시사이저를 사용하여 전자적인 색채를 풍부하게 표현하였고, 서커스만의 분위기를 이끌어가고 있었다. 이렇듯 서커스에서의 음악은 공연이 진행되는 동안 분위기를 이끌어가면서 관객과 공연자들의 사이에 교감을 형성시키는 역할을 담당하며, 관객이 공연에 집중할 수 있도록 돕는 역할을 한다. 또한 다양한 음향 효과는 공연 줄거리의 분위기 상승을 돕는 역할을 하거나 공간감을 표현하기도 한다. 최근에는 무대장치나 공연장의 기술적인 발전을 통해 화면 속에서만 체험할 수 있었던 멀티미디어 기술을 다양한 디지털 매체를 통해 실질적 공연장에서도 체험하고 있다. 또한 관객들에게는 현재의 서커스 공연이 기존과는 다른 종합 예술적 공연으로 되살아나며 새롭게 다가가고 있다. 따라서 서커스를 비롯한 다양한 퍼포먼스 음악의 발전과 효과적인 제작을 위해서는 공연 음악에 대한 이해와 지속적인 연구가 있어야 할 것이다.
