Abstract
This thesis examines how in Rachel Crothers’s(1878-1958) A Man’s World (1909) and He and She(1920), traditional gender roles are overturned, and women express their independence and find their own voice. The first part of this paper examines the most significant change and development in American theater in the beginning of the 20th century, namely the active participation of female playwrights. The rapid social changes taking place in America during those times were reflected in the female characters in such plays by female writers. The changes in American theater in the early part of the 20th century opened up new doors for female playwrights, giving them numerous opportunities. As one of the mainstream female playwrights of those times, Crothers portrayed the plight of American women in the beginning of the 20th century through American subject matter and materials that were a departure from mere imitations of European plays. Crothers dealt with the problems and difficulties women were faced with during those times by reflecting the social conditions of women through the female characters, and portraying the limitations and restrictions placed on women by men’s way of thinking and existing social norms. In this respect, Crothers can be considered to be the first female playwright to move away from the dramatic conventions of 19th century melodrama and make an original American play. Chapter two of this paper examines society’s double standards regarding sexual morals as portrayed in A Man's World and how women find their own voice. The paper explores how gender role changes both within the family and society can improve women's domestic and social status, and how such changes in gender roles underscores the non-authoritarian matriarch status and women's professional skills. Also, the establishment of women’s communities as a means of regaining women’s political voice is seen as a direct statement against a male-oriented society. Lastly this chapter looks at how women are pressing for changes in a male-oriented society by breaking the long silence about society’s double standard regarding sexual morals and making their voices be heard. The women’s voices reflect Crothers’s criticism against society’s double standard, which is not only limited to sexual morals but also extends to social and professional areas. Chapter three of this paper examines the inner conflict women are faced with due to family, marital relations and their career as portrayed in He and She, and how women find their own voice and independence through their professional career. A marital relationship that is based on companionship portrays a family that is not ruled by patriarchal authority, the changes in the domestic status between husband and wife, and shows the improvements in women’s status within the family. But these devices are set by Crothers to emphasize the bitter reality where women are in subordinate positions both in society and in their homes, and reflect Crothers’s criticism against women’s roles being confined to the household. The paper examines the process by which women start to discover their independent voice in a reality where limitations are placed on women’s social participation, and through an analysis of the last scene, it notes that the moment the woman gives up her work is when she truly becomes aware of her artistic ability and her independent status. And when Ann gives up her work and decides to stay at home, it does not mean the failure of a woman to make social advancement, but the independent choice of a woman to remain faithful to her role as a mother and wife - roles that a male-oriented society has placed on women - and a more active expression of her true self, and in this sense Ann is not a failed woman.
