National Geographic에 나타난 한국관

Abstract

개화기 서양인들의 시선에 관한 연구는 대부분 한말 외국인 기록을 통해 밝혀지고 있다. 그러나 특정 개인의 시선에 대한 연구가 대부분이며 역사적인 맥락 안에서 서양인들의 시선에 작용하는 문화적, 이데올로기적 요소에 대해서는 총체적으로 연구되지 않았다는 한계가 있다. ‘사진’이라는 시각 자료를 통해 타자의 시선에 대해 연구한 논문은 거의 없는 실정이나 최근 사진에 담긴 서양인의 한국관에 대한 연구가 나와 있어 개화기 서양인들의 시선 연구에 있어 다양한 접근 방식을 가능케 하였다. 그러나 연구된 대상과 범위가 전반적으로 좁은 형편이다. 이 연구는 National Geographic의 기사와 사진을 통해 National Geographic의 한국관을 집중적으로 살펴 볼 것이다. 이러한 목적을 위해 세 단계로 나누어 살펴보았다. 첫째, National Geographic의 성격을 당시의 국제정세와 미국의 사회적 배경을 통해 검토하였다. 그 결과 National Geographic은‘지식의 증진(increase)과 확산(diffusion)' 이라는 설립 취지 아래 미국의 국제적 팽창주의에 일조하는 역할을 하였음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 선택된 기간의 기사를 미국의 한반도 정책과 연관하여 분석하였으며, 사진은 촬영 구성 요소와 표면적인 내용으로 분류하여 살펴보았다. 그 결과 기사의 내용이 미국의 국제적 관계 속에서 시행된 한반도 정책과 무관하지 않다는 것을 알 수 있었으며 사진의 촬영 구성 요소에도 특정한 시선이 내재되어 있다는 것을 밝혔다. 이러한 촬영 구성 요소와 표면적인 내용을 통해 나타난 한국의 이미지는 전근대적, 원시, 미개, 야만 등으로 표출되고 있다. 셋째, 한국에 대한 National Geographic의 시선에 대한 기원은 제국주의를 통해 알아보았으며, 이러한 시선에 작용하는 복합적인 요소들의 체계에 대해 분석하였다. 그 결과 National Geographic에 나타난 시선은 서양과 동양을 이항대립으로 구분 짓는 오리엔탈리즘이라는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이러한 오리엔탈리즘은 제국주의와 밀접하게 연관되어 있었다. 본 연구는 1900년 ~ 1908년 National Geographic에 실린 한국 관련 사진에는 제국주의와 오리엔탈리즘이라는 시선이 내재되어 있으며, 이것이 사진의 내용 구성을 인위적으로 조작하는 주요인이라는 것을 역사적인 맥락 안에서 밝히고자 하였다.;A study of the view points of foreigners in the enlightenment time have been founded out on the records of foreigners in the late nineteenth century Korea. But there is a limit because the study depended on the view points of specific foreigners. And they can not include the study of culture and ideology. Recently a few study of the view points of foreigners in the photographs are published, but many studies do not verify the views deeply. Above all there is not the study of the views of Korea of National Geographic on the photographs, and this is the theme of this paper. It will be suggested that we can see the views of Western people on the pictures of National Geographic. And it will be verified what we can analyze the pictures approaching with culture and ideology. The first researched properties of National Geographic on international developments and social climates of America represent that National Geographic cooperated with American for the international expansionism of American. Secondly, articles and photographs of National Geographic are analyzed. Articles researched with the policy towards the Korean Peninsula of American, and photographs researched with the construction of photography and the a real image of photographs. This research represents that an article is continuous with the international relationship of American and the policy towards the Korean Peninsula. The construction of photography and the a real image of photographs in National Geographic is shown as an uncivilized land, Korea. The third researched things are the view points of National Geographic, and the origin of the view points on imperialism. And the important factors which affected the views are verified and organized. This research represents that the view points of National Geographic is be continuous with orientalism. As a result, the views of Korea of National Geographic is continuous with orientalism, and it is verified with historical context.
