Abstract
With influx of Western imperialist powers, Japanese invasion of mainland China initiated by the Manchurian Incident aggravated Chinese awareness of impending national decay. Many political forces including the official government of Kuomintang(Nationalist Party of China, KMT) at Nanjing and the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) in Jiangxi Soviet began to compete with one another in order to take the initiative of the nation-state. What, then, did Asia mean to Chinese intellectuals in the 1930s who had lived in that complicated situation? This thesis attempts to examine Asianism in 1930s' China with a special emphasis on two monthly magazines of New Asia(新亞細亞) and The New Eastern Journal(新東方). While New Asia represented official Asianism championed by KMT, The New Eastern Journal exemplified a civil level of discourses on Asia led by socialist intellectuals. Two magazines revealed the huge difference in contents and character of Asianism regarding viewpoints of Asia, the way of understanding of Asian states, and contents and ultimate goal for Asian solidarity. These differences were closely related to how to establish the relationship of Asianism and nationalism as well as how to maintain their attitudes toward nationalism in 1930s' China. Two magazines summarized their new vision of Asia as Asia based on Three Principles of the People and the East of the oppressed weak nations, respectively. New Asia reinterpreted Sun Yat-sen's Pan-Asianism in its nationalist point of view and excluded Japan from Asia while drawing on the concept of Royal Road(王道) to justify its anti-Japanese stance. However, it was not able to elevate Asianism to active anti-imperialist discourses based on solidarity with weak nations in Asia. For New Asia, Asianism was a premise for the practice of nationalism. Therefore, New Asia tended to subordinate Asianism to nationalism centered on China. In contrast, intellectuals of The New Eastern Journal identified themselves as heirs of Sun Yat-sen's Pan-Asianism and put a special emphasis on solidarity among Asian nations. They also aimed at achieving socialist national revolution through unity of the oppressed Asian nations and international joint fronts. New Asia acceded a distinct hierarchy between China and other Asian states. Their justification of discriminatory attitude toward Asian states came out from the memories of past Chinese civilization, in other words, a sort of Sinocentrism. New Asia intended to constitute another stratification in Asia because it conceived Asian solidarity to stand against Japan, a rival in Asia. New Asia tried to compete against Japan in discourses on Asia that monopolized then Asia, and transformed them into China-centered Asianism. Although New Asia criticized Japanese aggressive Asianism, it overlooked another aggressiveness latent in the idea of Asian solidarity directed by China. The concept of the East in The New Eastern Journal was quite different from that in New Asia. The New Eastern Journal usually considered East to be a geographical term comprehending entire Asia, but the usage was variable. The New Eastern Journal did not accept yellow race(黃種) as a universal concept that demarcated the East and the West. Instead, The New Eastern Journal presented the East as the place of the oppressed. In doing so, its movement for New East integrated emancipatory voices for the oppressed against the oppressors, and expanded the concept of Asia and yellow race beyond geographical and racial boundary. Simultaneously, it intensified anti-imperialist character of nationalism by defining nationalism as the movement for liberation and independence from imperialist domination and oppression. The New Eastern Journal did not regard Asian solidarity as just a geographical extension, and separated the Japanese people from the state of Japan. Whereas New Asia could not help taking resistant attitudes against imperialist power of Japan, The New Eastern Journal was able to expand boundary of Asian solidarity even into the Japanese people through anti-imperialist unity. Moreover, The New Eastern Journal considered anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist objectives to be realized through the solidarity with the oppressed in the West as well as those in East Asia including Chosun and Taiwan. Asian solidarity of New Asia and The New Eastern Journal was materialized in the concept of Nation International(民族國際) and Eastern Nation International(東方民族國際), respectively. New Asia criticized the League of Nations and the Comintern, and claimed to establish an alternative international organization named Nation International for the weak nations of Asia. However, it revealed its limit by taking KMT as a leader of Nation International for granted, as certainly demonstrated in its slogan, Asia based on Three Principles of the People. The New Eastern Journal, contemplating changed contemporary situation, proposed to set up Eastern Nation International, an alternative organization to the League of Nations and the Comintern(the Third International). Whereas New Asia regarded the state of China as a leader of Nation International, The New Eastern Journal considered the mass of peasants and laborers as a leading group and carefully presented how to organize Eastern Nation International based on them. In addition, intellectuals of The New Eastern Journal demonstrated their enthusiastic activities for accomplishing Asian solidarity as well as their abilities in discourses, considering that they tried to establish Eastern Nation International(東方民族國際), New East Academy(新東方學院), and the 8th chapter of Paris, and proposed to convoke East International Conference(東方國際會議).;서구제국주의에 더하여 滿洲事變을 시작으로 한 일본의 대륙침략은 중국의 亡國적 위기감을 가중시켰다.
