시각표현에서의 매체의 특성을 활용한 표현 연구

Abstract

조형예술은 눈으로는 볼 수 없는 아직 구체화되지 않은 작가의 정신적 세계에 대한 내용을, 다른 사람이 공감할 수 있도록 지각 가능한 ‘매개체’ (조형예술 에서의 작품)로 만들어내는 창조 활동이다. 그 만들어진 매개체는 인간의 감성에 자극을 주는 역할을 하며, 인간은 그 자극을 통해 스스로 혹은 서로간에 끊임없이 소통하며 발전해 가고 있다. 이처럼 중요한 역할을 하고 있는, 조형예술 창조활동의 산물인 매개체는 예술가에 의해 창조되며, 따라서 예술가들은 단지 이 매개체를 만들어만 내기 이전에 매개체가 어떻게 만들어지는지에 대한 이해와 탐구가 밑바탕 되어야 사람들의 감성에 오랜 여운을 남기는 창조활동을 할 수 있을 것이다. 매개체는 작가의 정신적 세계에 대한 내용이 조형적인 시각 이미지로 ‘표현’되었기에 존재할 수 있는 것으로, 표현은 조형예술을 창조할 수 있게 하는 근본적 수단이 된다. 그리고 표현이란 어떻게 이루어지는가라는 질문을 통해 더욱 궁극적인 창조 수단에 대한 해답, 즉 조형예술이 어떻게 실질적으로 지각 가능한 존재물이 되었는가의 실마리를 찾을 수 있다. 표현은 작가의 정신적 세계를 외부로 꺼내어 지각 가능한 형상의 매개체로 만들어내어 준다. 그러나 표현 역시 아무것도 없이 스스로 이루어지지는 못하며, 표현이 이루어지기 위해서는 매체(medium)가 필요하다. 작가의 머리와 마음속에서 눈에 보이지 않는 채로 떠다니던 것들이, 매체의 물질적인 성질을 통해 끄집어 내어지는데 이때 비로소 표현이 가능해지는 것이다. 결국 매체는 표현을 가능케 하고 그 표현은 창조자와 감상자 사이의 매개체인 작품을 만들어내며, 이 전반적인 것을 우리는 조형예술이라 일컫는다. 즉, 조형예술에서 매체가 존재하지 않는다면, 표현은 이루어질 수 없는 것이며, 이는 궁극적으로 조형예술의 존재 자체를 불가능하게 함을 의미한다. 그런데 오늘날 현대미술에서는 지나치게 표현내용의 개념적인 측면에만 치중하여 매체의 의미를 간과해버리는 경우를 종종 찾아볼 수 있는데, 결국 그 개념이 표현되어질 수 있는 근본적인 통로는 매체•매체의 물리적 성질이라는 것을 잊어서는 안되겠다. 매체는 곧 작가의 정신적 세계가 지나간 흔적이며 메시지이다. 매체의 물리적 성질은 말하고자 하는 모든 것을 담아내어 ‘보이게끔’ 해주는, 조형예술에서 표현을 위한 핵심 ‘열쇠’이다. 작가는 매체에 자신을 담아내어 보여주고, 그것이 가장 진솔할 때 사람들의 감성에 공감대를 끌어낸다. 때문에 조형예술에서의 적합한 매체에 대한 탐구 및 선택, 매체의 물리적 특성 활용은 이상적인 창조활동을 위한 끊임없는 연구 대상이 되어야 한다. 매체는 그 성질에 따라 표현에 무한한 가능성을 열어준다. 본 연구자 역시 창의적인 예술가의 한 사람으로 나아가기 위해 이러한 점을 깨닫고, 시각표현에 있어 매체의 활용성에 대한 이론적인 배경을 바탕으로, 본 연구자의 정신적 세계를 가장 이상적으로 담아낼 수 있는 매체에 대한 탐구를 하고자 한다. 그리고 이를 통해 기존의 형상 속에 안주하지 않으며 새로운 시각표현의 한 방향을 제시하는데 그 의미를 두었다.;The figurative arts is a creative activity to make a medium(a work in figurative arts) of the mental world of the artist not concrete yet and not viewable to be perceived by others. The medium will work to stimulate the emotion of human, and the human communicate continuously with each other and develop. The medium that is so important like this is a work of a figurative artist. In this connection, the artist has to have understanding and investigation on how the medium is made before just make medium, then he will be able to have true creative artwork that can move people's emotion. The medium is an expression of the mental world of an artist in figurative image, and expression is a fundamental tool for figurative arts. And it is possible to get a clue to explain the question for the more ultimate tool for creation, that is to say, how figurative art could be existed as a perceivable matter through how the expression is made. The expression takes out the mental world of an artist and make it a medium of a perceivable image. However, the expression is not possible to be made by itself. It needs medium to be expressed. Those floating matters in head and mind of an artist is taken out through the physical characters of a medium, then the expression is possible. In conclusion, the medium make the expression possible, and the expression creates the work of a medium between a creator and an appreciator, and we call these whole the figurative art. If the medium doesn't exist, the expression can not be made, and this means that the figurative art can not be existed. Yet, we observe that, in modern art, the conceptual side is emphasized too much, and the meaning of the medium is neglected often. However, we should not forget that the ultimate channel of the expression of the concept is the physical character of the medium. The medium is an evidence and image of a mental trace of an artist. The physical character of the medium is a key to the expression of the figurative art that enables everything to express perceivable. The artist puts himself in a medium and shows. And when it is most frank, it moves people's emotion, and the people sympathize with the artist or the work, and communicate. Because of this, the search and selection of the right medium in the figurative art and utilization of the physical character of the medium should be studied continuously for ideal activities of creation. The medium opens limitless possibility of expression depending on the characters of it. This researcher also, as one of the creative artists, realized it, and tried and searched the medium that can contain most ideally the mental world of this researcher, based on theoretical background on the utilization of the medium in visual expression. And through this, not living in peace in existing images, I put the meaning in suggesting a way of new visual expression.
