Lives in Prostitution

Abstract

This M.A. thesis project consists of a series of five investigative feature articles based on the Wall Street Journal formula. The articles aim to expose the hardships suffered by Gijichon prostitutes in order to create awareness and contribute to a deeper understanding of these women’s lives. The information in these investigative feature articles was obtained through extensive research on existing government and NGO data and statistics. Moreover, interviews were conducted with some of the women who had worked in Gijichon. The articles focus on the following aspects of the Gijichon women’s lives: their economic and social backgrounds, their current financial status, the reasons that motivated them to become prostitutes, their working conditions, and their exposure to violence and human rights abuses. A theoretical paper prefaces the M.A. thesis. The paper examines several principles of investigative feature writing and presents several examples that detail how these principles were applied to the writing of the investigative feature articles. The paper also examines the methods that were employed to fulfill the goals of good feature writing. Finally, the theoretical paper details the methodology that was used for gathering information and concludes by presenting the scope and limitations of this project.;본 논문은 월 스트리트 저널 형식을 기본 틀로 한 다섯 개의 조사 보고서로 이루어져 있으며, 미군부대 주변에서 성매매를 해 온 여성들의 힘겨운 삶을 파헤침으로써 이 여성들에 대한 심층적 이해를 돕기 위함에 그 목적이 있다. 이러한 보고서 형식 특집 기사에 있는 정보는 공식자료와 비정부 기구 자료 및 통계, 그 외 보고서 등의 광범위한 자료조사와 기지촌에서 일한 일부 여성들의 인터뷰를 통해 수집되었다. 본 특집 기사는 다섯 개의 다른 주제로 기지촌 여성들의 삶에 접근한다. 즉, 경제 및 사회적 배경, 성매매 여성이 된 동기, 현재 경제적 상태, 근무환경, 폭력과 인권유린에 노출된 삶에 관한 문제들을 보여준다. 본 논문의 전반부는 본 논문 작성법에 대해 기술한다. 여기서는 보고서 형식 특집 기사 쓰기의 원리를 고찰하고, 어떻게 이 원리들이 월 스트리트 저널 형식조사 보고서 기사에 적용이 되었는지를 예시들과 함께 상세히 제시한다. 또한 좋은 특집 기사쓰기의 목표를 달성하기 위해 적용된 방법들을 검토하며, 정보 수집에 있어 사용된 방법론에 대해서도 상세히 논한다. 마지막으로 본 논문의 범위 및 한계에 대해서 논한다.
