Literary Translation Project

Abstract

The Literary Translation Project: Sung Sukje’s “Bathers” is an attempt to practice literary translation. This M. A. thesis project translates a Korean novella, “Yoktang-ui yeoindeul (Bathers),” written by Sung Sukje in 2000. The project also includes an overview of mainstream theories and issues involved in translating literature to find a translation theory most applicable to a contemporary Korean story. Literary translation is a critical means of having communicative access to foreign texts and gaining diverse cultural knowledge. Literary translation is thus of great interest and a common practice all over the world, and numerous works of literary translation are being published in the world. This thesis project thus aims at translating Sung Sukje’s “Bathers,” which could possibly be published afterwards and contribute to accumulating English resources for studies of Korean literature and culture. The project also concentrates on both analyzing and applying translation theories to help the actual translation process. The Situation-Centered concept is an alternative adopted in this project after studying prevailing translation theories and trying to adapt them to the selected Korean story. It is a modified combination of prevailing theoretical perspectives, which conceptualizes translation as a set of situation-specific and text-specific decision-making processes.;본 논문은 『문학동네』 2000 년 여름호에 발표된 성석제의 단편소설 “욕탕의 여인들”을 영어로 번역하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 논문은 또한 문학번역에 관련된 기존의 주요 이론과 쟁점들을 고찰함으로써 한국어 단편소설을 영어로 번역하는데 적합한 이론과 방법을 모색해 보고자 한다. 문학번역은 사람들로 하여금 다양한 외국 작품들과 문화적, 학문적 지식을 경험할 수 있게 해주는 중요한 수단이자 통로라 할 수 있다. 따라서 세계의 많은 학자들, 번역가들, 그리고 독자들이 문학번역에 상당한 관심을 보이고 있으며, 매년 수많은 문학 작품들이 전 세계적으로 꾸준히 번역, 출판되고 있다. 한국문학이 외국어로 번역되어 해당언어권에서 출판되는 경우도 그 수에 있어서 적지 않으며, 한국문학을 해외에 널리 알리기 위한 여러 가지 시도와 지원이 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 1980년대 이후 상당히 활발했던 한국문학의 영어 번역과 출판이 지난 몇 년 동안은 부진을 겪고 있는 상황이며, 과거 영어권에 소개된 한국문학에 대한 관심과 호응 역시 괄목할만한 수준은 아니라는 것이 일반적인 평가이다. 성석제의 “욕탕의 여인들”을 번역함으로써 본 논문은 한국 문화 및 한국학 관련 영어자료의 축적에 기여하고자 하며, 궁극적으로는, 역량 있는 한국문학작품과 작가를 영어권에 알리는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 본 논문의 전반부에서는 “욕탕의 여인들”을 번역하는데 가장 적합한 원칙과 방법을 찾기 위해 주요 문학번역 이론들과 그 문제점들이 논의되며, 그 이론들을 분석하고 취합하여 실제 번역과정에 적용해 봄으로써, 상황중심 번역개념, 즉 특정번역작품과 특정상황에 따른 일련의 선택들이 대안으로 제시된다. 그리고, 그 대안이 본 논문의 작품번역에 실제로 어떻게 적용되었는지 예시문과 함께 제시된다.
