Abstract
Zimbabwe experienced the worst economic crisis in its post-independent history from 2005 to2012. This period saw a dramatic downfall of the economy in the midst of an unstable political environment. This was worsened by Zimbabwe’s traditional aid donors and trading partners, the West who disengaged from the country by withdrawing their commercial support and imposing sanctions. In the midst of these, China began to increase its influences in Zimbabwe. The study analyzes the role played by China in curing the economic crisis of Zimbabwe during its difficult times. Considering this, the study hypothesizes that Chinese presence in Zimbabwe during the time of economic crisis has been an antidote designed to neutralize the severity of the economic problems, especially the effects of sanctions. This study adopted a case study that made use of secondary data in analyzing China’s activities during the economic crisis, from 2005 to 2012. The findings of this study give evidence to support the notion that China helped to relieve Zimbabwe’s economic crisis through trade and investment and bilateral relations. Zimbabwe serves as a good illustration of the positive role of China’s presence in Africa, in that Zimbabwe’s economic crisis was relieved by China’s economic assistance. Of course, China’s economic support for Zimbabwe has some limitations. China’s unsustainable short-term investment projects, imbalance of trade between the two countries were not sufficient enough to fundamentally improve the real causes of Zimbabwe’s economic problems. The findings of the study reveal that China-Zimbabwe relationship needs to counteract the trade imbalance to mutually benefit both countries and pursue sustainable long-term investment projects to fundamentally tackle the economic crisis of Zimbabwe. Further, this study also offers helpful data for other developing African nations in building up mutually benefiting future relations with China.
