Created in the Image of God

Abstract

The human being is Imago Dei or created in the image of God (cf. Genesis 1:27). Such theological affirmation signifies that men and women alike are equal and dignified in the eyes of God and establishes the belief on the inviolability of the human person. As we all have the image of God in us, therefore, the main argument in this paper is that nobody should be considered as lesser than the other and that being a true Christian requires one not only to understand women in the sex industry but to go beyond the idea of charity and compassion wherein one is driven with a sense of justice. This thesis is about the experiences of Filipino women involved in the sex industry in Korea, specifically those women in the “camptowns” in Uijeongbu, Dongducheon, and Songtan areas. This study wanted to give an authentic voice to these women and attempted to articulate a theological vision to influence a change in the social outlook and behaviour towards these women from condescending and degrading to respectful and life-affirming. It conveys a message of hope to the women in the sex industry and uplifts their voices to stand up for their rights and their dignity as human beings. From a rich trove of materials pertaining to the feminist theology, the theological articulations of renowned feminist theologians were cited in this thesis as reference point to the theological opinion posed by this writer. The Christian faith requires us to immerse in the social realities of our world. Therefore, this thesis calls on the Christian church to focus its ministry where the people are, and in this case, to be in solidarity with the women in the sex industry. As a stakeholder in society, the church must create programs and ministries that are relevant and responsive to the needs of these women. Thus, it is a great challenge for the church to take an active stance on violence against women and work together to end the endemic problem of prostitution. This study does not claim to have all the answers to the problem of prostitution of women. However, this is a modest attempt to contribute to the on-going dialogue on the issue and a resource material for future discourses.;모든 인간이 하나님의 형상대로 창조되었다(창1:27)는 성서의 말씀은 하나님의 눈에 모든 인간은 평등한 존재라는 것을 의미한다. 그러므로 세상의 어떤 사람도 다른 사람보다 더 못한 사람은 없다. 이 글의 주된 문제의식은 성산업에 종사하는 여성들을 겉으로는 이해한다고 말하면서 속으로는 더럽고 수치스러운 일을 한다고 여기는 그리스도인들을 과연 진정한 그리스도인으로 부를 수 있느냐 하는 것이다. 이 연구의 목적은 성 산업에 종사하는 여성들에게도 하나님이 부여하신 인간으로서의 존엄성과 권리가 있음을 밝히려는데 있다. 이 연구의 핵심은 한국에서 성 매매 산업에 종사하고 있는 필리핀 여성들, 특히 의정부, 동두천, 송탄 등지의 기지촌 여성들에 관한 것이다. 이 여성들은 하나님의 형상대로 창조된 인간으로서의 본질이 파괴된 채 하나의 상품으로 취급되어왔다. 하지만 연구자는 이 여성들을 직접 만나 이들의 목소리를 대변하고자 했으며, 이 여성들은 비하하거나 수치스럽게 여기지 않을 수 있는 신학적 비전을 세우고자 했다. 왜냐하면 연구자는 하나님이 그들을 폄하하지 않으시며, 그들의 삶은 우리의 충분한 존중 속에 존엄한 삶을 살 가치가 있다고 믿기 때문이다. 진정한 그리스도교 신앙은 세상의 현실을 깊이 있게 바라볼 것을 요구한다. 그러므로 연구자는 이 논문에서 그리스도의 교회가 성산업에 종사하는 여성들을 이해하고 지지하고 연대하는 일에 관심을 가질 것을 촉구한다. 그리스도의 교회들은 이러한 여성들의 아픔을 이해하고 이들의 필요에 호응할 수 있는 프로그램들을 개발해야 한다. 그렇게 함으로써 그리스도의 교회는 성매매 산업에 종사하는 여성들에게 가해지는 폭력의 문제에 대처하고 매매춘이라는 고질적 문제를 종식시키는데 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 그리스도의 교회가 이 여성들을 지지하기 위해서는 구체적으로 무엇을 할 수 있는가? 어떻게 그리스도인들은 그들의 존엄성을 높이고 그들이 스스로 자존감을 회복하도록 도울 수 있는가? 어떻게 하면 우리는 성매매 산업에 종사하는 여성들이 스스로를 하나님의 사랑을 받기에 합당치 못한 존재라고 생각하지 않도록 도울 수 있는가? 이 연구는 바로 이러한 질문들에 답하고자 한다.
