슈베르트(Franz Peter Schubert)의 가곡 <Ellens Gesang> 분석연구

Abstract

The present paper is aimed to investigate the second song 'Jäger, ruhe von der Jagd!' and the third song 'Ave Maria' included in the Lieder 「Ellens Gesang」of Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828). Among the many songs of Schubert, 「Ellens Gesang」contains the content of epic rather than short poems, and the three songs of 「Ellens Gesang」are deeply related based on the contents of the epic. This paper also examines the life of Walter Scott (1771-1832), the author of epic「The Lady of the Lake」that is the background of 「Ellens Gesang」. Next, facts about epic were discussed to examine Walter Scott's epic "The Lady of the Lake". In addition, the contents of 「The Lady of the Lake」and the relationship of the situations and figures of the epic were analyzed to help the understanding of 「Ellens Gesang」. The structure and format of the three songs of Ellens Gesang were identified by the original and translated lyrics and music analysis, and the overall mood of the songs were examined through the analysis of tempo and theme symbols and harmony analysis. In addition, Schubert's intent of composition was examined focusing on the relationship between the vocal part and piano accompaniment, in order to find how the epic was expressed through the music. The results of research are as follows: Calm, but strong and dignified nature of Ellen was revealed through the features of 「The Lady of the Lake」where the description of events and pictorial techniques of background stand out, the situation of Ellen, and the relationship with the surrounding figures. Schubert dramatized the contents of the poems and the mind of Ellen through the three songs of 「Ellens Gesang」with these contents. The relationship between the vocal music and the piano accompaniment was fused to fit the contents of the epic; and the bass with octave parallel to one to 8th scale degrees was frequently used for all the three songs. The first and second songs proved similar rhythmic elements and mood depending on the contents of the poems, and all three songs had identical division of lyrics and music format, with the musical contents vary as appropriate according to the poems. This study enabled more detailed understanding of the overall atmosphere of the songs, the nature and situations of the character Ellen of the epic 「The Lady of the Lake」, and the meaning of the lyrics through the relationship between the people. Each song represents the temporal situation of Ellen in the epic, with remarkable psychological changes of Ellen, accordingly. The analysis of Schubert's musical features in 「Ellens Gesang」enabled the understanding of the intention of the expression of Ellen, reflecting the contents of epic 「The Lady of the Lake」rather than a simple piece of poem. The research would help understanding of the figure Ellen, thus would help play the musical performance reflecting the musical features.;본 논문은 슈베르트(Franz Peter Schubert, 1797-1828)의 가곡「엘렌의 노래(Ellens Gesang)」 제 1곡 '전사여, 쉬세요!(Raste, Krieger!)' 제 2곡 '사냥꾼이여, 쉬세요!(Jäger, ruhe von der Jagd!)', 제 3곡 '아베 마리아(Ave Maria)' 관한 분석 연구이다. 슈베르트의 많은 가곡들 중 「엘렌의 노래」는 단편의 시가 아닌 서사시의 내용을 담고 있으며 「엘렌의 노래」 세 곡은 서사시의 내용에 의거하여 깊은 연관성이 있는 작품이다. 본 논문에서는「엘렌의 노래」의 배경이 된 서사시 「호수의 여인」의 작가 월터스콧(Walter Scott, 1771-1832)의 생애를 살펴보았다. 그 후 월터스콧의 서사시인 「호수의 여인」의 연구를 위해 서사시에 대해 알아보았다. 그리고 「호수의 여인」의 내용 및 여주인공 엘렌(Ellen)의 서사시 속 상황과 주위 인물과의 관계를 분석하여 「엘렌의 노래」에 대한 이해를 도왔다. 엘렌의 노래 제 1곡, 제 2곡, 제 3곡에 관한 가사원문 및 번역과 악곡분석을 통해 세 곡의 구조와 형식을 이해하였고 템포와 악상기호, 화성 분석을 통해 전반적인 곡의 분위기를 살펴보았다. 그리고 서사시 내용이 곡을 통해 어떻게 표현되었는지 알기 위해 성악성부와 피아노 반주부의 관계를 중점으로 슈베르트의 작곡의도를 살펴보았다. 연구한 결과는 다음과 같다. 사건묘사와 배경의 회화적 기술이 돋보이는 「호수의 여인」의 특징과 엘렌이 처한 상황, 주위 인물과의 관계를 통해 차분하지만 강인하고 당당한 엘렌의 성격을 알 수 있었다. 슈베르트는 이러한 내용의 「엘렌의 노래」 세 곡을 통해 시의 내용과 엘렌의 심경을 극적으로 표현하였다. 성악 성부와 피아노 반주부의 관계를 시의 내용에 맞게 융화 시켰으며 세 곡 모두 1도와 8도를 병행하는 옥타브의 베이스를 자주 사용하였다. 제 1곡과 제 2곡은 시의 내용에 따라 리듬의 요소와 분위기가 비슷한 것을 알 수 있었고, 세 곡 모두 시와 음악 형식의 구분이 같으며 음악적 내용이 시에 따라 적절히 변화하였다. 이러한 연구를 통해 서사시 「호수의 여인」 속 엘렌이라는 인물의 성격과 그녀가 처한 상황, 인물과의 관계를 통해 가사의 내용이 의미하는 바와 전박적인 곡의 분위기를 좀 더 자세히 알 수 있었다. 각 곡은 서사시속 엘렌이 처한 상황을 시간적으로 나타내주며 그에 따른 엘렌의 심리적 변화가 돋보인다. 「엘렌의 노래」 속 슈베르트의 음악적 특징을 분석하여 단순한 단편의 시가 아닌 「호수의 여인」이라는 서사시속 내용을 반영하여 엘렌을 표현한 의도를 알 수 있었다. 이는 엘렌이라는 인물을 이해하고 더 나아가 슈베르트의 음악적 특징을 살려 연주하는데 도움을 줄 것이다.
