Abstract

This thesis investigates the transformation of the meaning of gentility in eighteenth-century English novels as the emerging middle-class gains political and cultural hegemony. The concept of gentility is central to understanding social conflicts in eighteenth-century England as the middle-class gains upward mobility. This thesis argues that the eighteenth-century English novel plays a crucial role in redefining the concept of gentility from the inherited virtue into internal ethical value, and that female fictional characters play a critical role in this process of redefinition. Through a close reading of three literary works, Daniel Defoe’s Moll Flanders, Samuel Richardson’s Pamela and Frances Burney’s Evelina, this thesis explores how female characters as domestic women participate in the formation of a new discourse of true English gentility. As such, the novel can be seen as participating in the ideological formation and reproduction of middle class values. The first chapter presents a historical review of the changing field of status and rank definitions in contemporary surveys. The second chapter analyzes the heroin’s misconception of gentility and her failure to achieve the true gentility illustrated in Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders. Moll attempts to be a gentlewoman through becoming a successful economic subject, but her endeavor ultimately fails because it is motivated primarily by desire for increased material possessions. The third chapter charts the mapping of female inner virtue with true gentility in Samuel Richardson’s Pamela. Richardson depicts Pamela’s inner virtue as a strong will to protect her chastity and preserve her integrity. Prompted by Mr. B’s confinement and oppression, Pamela’s virtue is affirmed by her intense inner reflection in her writing and finally rewarded. The aristocratic master eventually recognizes her moral and spiritual force as a new source of true gentility. The final chapter argues that Frances Burney’s Evelina provides a new model of the true English gentleman through the characterization of Lord Orville. Lord Orville’s politeness and his feminine sensibility establish him to be a new ethical subject marked by his ability to understand and sympathize with others. His moral worth is established as an alternative to the corrupt and effeminate aristocratic values. Evelina redefines true gentility as a mark of English superiority.;본 논문은 18세기 영국 소설을 중심으로 젠틸리티(gentility) 담론의 형성 과정과 여성 인물들의 역할에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 18세기는 상업을 기반으로 물질적인 부를 확보한 신흥 부르주아 계층과 기득권 세력인 토지 귀족 계층 사이의 갈등이 첨예하게 드러나는 시기다. 무엇보다 귀족 계층의 오래된 가문의 혈통에서 파생된 미덕인 젠틸리티를 신흥 계층이 열망하기 시작하면서 젠틸리티 개념은 당대의 사회적, 계층적 갈등을 이해하는 핵심어가 된다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 18세기 영국 소설을 통해 젠틸리티가 귀족의 혈통적 미덕에서 중산층 개인의 내면적 가치로 재개념화되는 과정과, 여성 주인공들이 근대적 주체로서 젠틸리티 담론 형성에 적극적으로 개입하고 있음을 밝힌다. 본 논문의 2장에서는 다니엘 드포의 작품 『몰 플랜더스』를 중심으로 젠틸리티를 오인했고, 따라서 그것을 획득할 수 없었던 여성 주인공 몰의 실패를 논한다. 몰은 실패는 젠틸리티를 경제적 안정과 풍요로움으로 오해한 데서 비롯한다. 그녀는 오직 물질적인 부의 축적을 통해 젠틸리티를 소유할 수 있다고 생각했기 때문에 젠틸리티에 함의된 도덕성을 보지 못했다. 그러므로 그녀가 구하고자 했던 젠틸리티는 실질적 내면을 상실한 허울에 불과하다. 이와 같은 몰을 통해 드포는 비도덕성으로 비난받던 상업을 기반으로 경제적 부를 달성한 중산층이 과연 도덕적 가치인 젠틸리티를 획득할 수 있는가를 문제화한다. 요컨대, 몰은 수많은 범죄를 저지르면서 경제적 부를 획득하지만, 그녀의 과시적 소비 형태는 신사 계층의 젠틸리티를 모방하는데 그치면서 진정한 젠틸리티를 구현하는데 실패한다. 본 논문의 3장에서는 사뮤엘 리차드슨의 작품 『파멜라』를 중심으로 파멜라가 자신의 내면적 미덕을 입증하는 과정과, 그러한 파멜라의 노력이 도덕적으로 타락한 Mr. B를 교화하는 데 실질적인 영향력을 행사하고 있음을 살펴본다. 파멜라는 하녀임에도 불구하고 자신의 내면에 대한 깊은 성찰과 글쓰기를 통해 그녀만의 정신적인 미덕을 입증해낸다. 그리하여 파멜라는 자신을 끊임없이 유혹했던 방탕한 주인인 Mr. B를 교화시키고 결혼에 이른다. 결혼에 이르기까지의 과정에서뿐만 아니라 결혼 후에도 파멜라는 중산층의 이상적인 가치를 실천하는 모습을 보여준다. 그녀는 가정을 중산층의 가치를 실현하는 장으로 세우면서, Mr. B를 살인자와 난봉꾼이라는 불명예로부터 구하고 이상적인 남편이자 신사로 변화시킨다. 이는 곧 Mr. B라는 인물의 젠틸리티가 재건되는 과정과 일치한다. 나아가 파멜라의 시련과 성찰을 다룬 글이 귀족 사회에 유포되면서 젠틸리티는 혈통이 아닌 내면의 가치를 중시하는 것으로 다시 정의된다. 본 논문의 4장에서는 프랜시스 버니의 『이블리나』를 통해 세상에 처음 발을 내디딘 어리숙한 이블리나가 도덕적인 인물로 성장해가는 과정을 살펴보고, 그 과정에서 발견하게 되는 여성적 감수성에 근거한 오빌의 근대적 젠틸리티에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 작품에서 오빌이 구현하는 가치는 프랑스의 영향으로 유약해지고 도덕적 불감증에 빠진 상류 귀족들의 가치와는 차별화되는 것이고, 이는 이블리나에 의해 진정한 귀족이 구현해야 하는 이상적인 가치로 판별된다. 오빌은 섬세한 여성적 감수성을 지녔기에 계층적인 편견 없이 타인을 배려할 줄 아는 탁월한 공감 능력을 보인다. 이런 특징이 구현된 오빌의 공손함은 타락하고 유약해져버린 귀족 사회에 대항하는 대안적 가치로 제시된다. 차별화된 공손함을 지닌 오빌과 이것을 판별해 낸 도덕적 주체인 이블리나의 결혼을 통해 이 두 사람이 구현하는 젠틸리티는 영국이라는 제국이 내세우는 진정한 이상적 가치를 재현하게 된다.
