마르셀 뒤프레의 오르간 음악에 대한 고찰

Abstract

This essay contains a research on Cavaillé-Coll, which represents an important music culture in France from 19th century to 20th century, and Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) who were deeply influenced by this organ. Throughout an in-depth analysis of 「Variations sur un Noël, Op.20」(1922), research on Dupré’s achievements and his characteristics on his organ masterpieces were conducted. Dupré is a well-known French composer, organ musician, professor, author, and editor in 19th and 20th century. He was exceptional especially in an improvisation, and he is still respected as a legendary musician today. Followed by Charels Marie Widor (1844-1937), Dupré became a organist in St. Sulpice and produced many organ masterpieces with Cavaillé-Coll, which was the greatest organ in France. Dupré’s music was completely under the influence of Cavaillé-Coll. Moreover, other factors such as, Neo-classicism, symphonic style, and gregorian choir have influenced him as well. A chromatic scale, artful techniques and colorism describes his music style very well. While working with Cavaillé-Coll, Dupré faced a new situation. He traveled France, England, America, and Canada and performed his music. During his journey of music performance, he experienced a memory system. This was something he could not see on Cavaillé-Coll; therefore, he was surprised by that system. This was produced by English and American organ builders. It was named general piston, which was produced by American and English organ builders. It used electricity to change all the stops of organ at the same time. With this new technology, Dupré produced his masterpiece, 「Variations sur un Noël, Op.20」. 「Variations sur un Noël, Op.20」 had its roots on Christmas carol, “Noël Nouvelet”. This masterpiece was composed of 10 special variations. The main contained a form of A-B-A’s 3 parts and through 10 variations, it develops in variety of ways. While these variations heard clearly, the main theme could not be heard. However, variations developed with main theme in the same structure. Moreover, variations well-demonstrate Dupré’s Cannon technique, staccato, use of chromatic scale, an artful technique of hand-keyboard, colorful music tone. 「Variations sur un Noël, Op.20」 is recommended for organists who desire to study Dupré’s organ masterpieces, because it is extremely concise and has a variety of difficulties. These variations are still respected today because of their diverse playing techniques and registration used in each variation. This masterpiece has the ability to demonstrate organists’ every techniques and possibilities. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for organists who want to experience Dupré’s organ music. Dupré is not being analyzed compared to other respected composers; however, he is still respected as a great musician. In addition, many students of Dupré studied his music and inherited his masterpiece. His masterpieces are continuously played in many recitals today.;본 논문은 19세기부터 20세기 초의 프랑스 음악에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 까바이예 꼴 오르간과 이 오르간의 영향을 받은 마르셀 뒤프레(Marcel Dupré, 1886-1971)에 관해 연구하였다. 그리고 뒤프레의 대표적인 오르간 작품인 「노엘 주제에 의한 변주곡, Op. 20」(1922)(Variations sur un Noël)의 분석을 통해 뒤프레의 업적을 고찰했고 그의 오르간 음악의 특징을 구체적으로 연구하였다. 뒤프레는 19세기와 20세기를 연결하는 프랑스의 작곡가로서, 오르간 연주가, 교수, 작가, 그리고 편집자로서도 널리 알려진 인물이다. 특히 오르간 즉흥연주에 뛰어났던 뒤프레는 지금까지도 전설적인 인물로 인정받고 있다. 뒤프레는 비도르(Charles Marie Widor, 1844-1937)의 뒤를 이어 슐피스 성당(St. Sulpice)의 오르가니스트로 있으면서 그 성당에 설치된 당시 프랑스 최대의 까바이예 꼴(Cavaillé-Coll) 오르간의 영향으로 훌륭한 오르간 작품을 많이 작곡하였다. 뒤프레의 오르간 음악은 이 까바이예 꼴 오르간의 절대적인 영향 아래 있었으며 신고전주의적 성격과 표제음악, 심포닉 스타일, 그리고 그레고리안 성가의 영향을 받았다. 그 외에도 반음계, 기교적인 테크닉, 색채주의 등은 그의 주된 음악적 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 까바이예 꼴 오르간의 음색을 바탕으로 작곡활동을 하던 뒤프레는 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 된다. 그는 프랑스 외 영국, 미국, 캐나다 등지로 연주여행을 떠나며 까바이예 꼴 오르간에서는 불가능했던 메모리 시스템을 접하고 신선한 충격을 받게 되었다. 즉, 영국과 미국 오르간 제작자들이 만들어놓은, 전기를 이용하여 오르간의 모든 건반의 스탑을 한 순간에 바꿀 수 있는 새로운 장치(general piston)를 알게 되었던 것이다. 이러한 오르간의 새로운 가능성을 배경으로 뒤프레는 「노엘 주제에 의한 변주곡, Op. 20」 을 작곡하였다. 이 작품은 프랑스의 크리스마스 캐롤 “노엘 누블렛(Noël Nouvelet)”에 기초한 곡으로, 하나의 주제와 10개의 변주로 구성되어 있다. 주제는 A-B-A'의 3부분 형식을 갖고 있으며 10개의 변주들을 통해 다양한 형식으로 발전된다. 이 변주들은 주제가 뚜렷이 들리는 반면 주제가 전혀 들리지는 않지만 주제와 같은 구조 안에서 발전되어 그 본질을 갖고 다양하게 구성되어 있다. 또한 대위적으로 모방되는 캐논 기법과 스타카토 음형, 반음계의 사용, 손건반의 화려한 기교적 테크닉, 색채적인 음색 등 뒤프레의 음악적인 특징들이 잘 나타나 있다. 「노엘 주제에 의한 변주곡, Op. 20」은 뒤프레의 오르간 음악을 공부하고자 하는 오르가니스트들에게 매우 적합한 짜임새 있고 다양한 난이도를 가진 작품이다. 특히 각 변주곡에서 사용된 다양한 변주기법과 작곡가가 제시한 음색 배합은 이 작품을 더욱 빛나게 만드는 요소라고 할 수 있다. 즉, 이 곡은 오르간이란 악기, 그리고 오르간 연주자가 보여 줄 수 있는 모든 가능성을 담고 있다고 평가되며 뒤프레의 오르간 음악을 접하기를 원하는 오르간 연주자들에게 적극 추천할 수 있는 곡이라고 할 수 있다. 뒤프레는 다른 작곡가들에 비해 많이 연구되지 못하고 있지만, 어린 나이부터 음악을 사랑하고 평생 동안 오르간을 연주하던 훌륭한 음악가로서 그의 많은 제자들은 그의 음악을 계승하였으며 현재에도 그의 작품들은 연주홀에서 꾸준히 연주되고 있다.
