William Albright의 「Organbook Ⅲ : 12 Etudes for Small Organ」에 관한 연구

Abstract

20세기에는 무조음악, 전자음악, 우연성음악, 신고전주의, 미니멀리즘 등 다양한 양식들의 음악이 등장했다. 20세기는 다양성을 실험한 시대로 이러한 급진적인 실험 정신이 현대적 혹은 아방가르드적이라 할 수 있는 음악양식을 만들었다. 20세기 미국 음악에 있어 중요한 위치를 차지하는 윌리엄 올브라이트(William Albright, 1944-1998)는 미국 태생의 작곡가로 그의 작품 속에서 이러한 20세기적 아방가르드의 극단적인 실험적 요소와 다양한 음악적 테크닉을 찾아볼 수 있다. 그는 오르간 곡을 비롯하여 성악곡, 피아노곡, 합창곡, 실내악곡 등을 남겼으며 그 중 다수의 오르간 곡은 그의 음악적 철학을 이해하는데 도움을 준다. 올브라이트는 정해진 하나의 양식에 얽매이지 않고 다양한 음악적 표현 방식을 통해 자신이 상상하는 음악을 원하는 대로 적절히 표현하였다. 그의 음악에서는 특히 리듬적 특징을 들 수 있는데 그의 다수의 곡들에서 재즈(Jazz)의 리듬적 요소를 찾아볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 올브라이트의 작곡 기법이 종합적으로 잘 활용되어진 작품 「Organbook Ⅲ : 12 Etudes for Small Organ」을 연구하기 위해 올브라이트의 생애와 그의 음악 특징을 알아보고 「Organbook Ⅲ : 12 Etudes for Small Organ」전체 작품 분석함으로써 보다 더 올브라이트의 작품을 이해하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 방법을 찾아보고자 한다. 「Organbook Ⅲ : 12 Etudes for Small Organ」은 총12곡으로 Volume 1과 Volume 2으로 나뉘어 있으며 각각 6곡의 연습곡으로 구성되어 있다. Volume 1의 첫 번째 곡 Fanfare/ Echo는 4도, 5도, 그리고 6도 음정을 중심으로 하는 연습곡으로써, 이들 음정이 분산화음, 수직화음을 통해서 나타난다. 두 번째 곡 Curio I (trio)는 다양한 음정과 리듬을 연습하는 곡으로 특히 도약진행이 많이 쓰였으며 세 번째 곡 Scherzo (Chimaera)는 스케일을 위한 연습곡으로 반음계, 온음계, 선법 등 다양한 스케일들이 함께 사용되었다. 네 번째 곡 Jeu (for the stops)는 스탑(stop) 사용을 위한 연습곡으로 다양한 stop들이 사용된다. 다섯 번째 곡 Recitative-chorale는 Recitative와 chorale적인 형태가 서로 번갈아 나타나는 연습곡으로 마디구분이 없는 단일마디로 되어 있다. 여섯 번째 곡 Mountains은 단선율과 화음의 대비가 잘 나타나는 곡으로 무조(Atonality)와 다성화음(Polychord)이 주로 쓰였다. Volume II의 첫 번째 곡 Underground stream은 아르페지오 혹은 반음계적 진행을 연습하기 위한 무조성(Atonality)의 곡이다. Curio II (trio)는 3화음을 위한 연습곡이며 다성화음(Polyphony)이 특징으로 나타난다. 세 번째 곡 Basse de Trompette은 트럼펫 음색을 위한 연습곡이며 트럼펫의 강한 리듬적 특징이 잘 살아있다. 넷째 곡 Jig for the feet (Totentanz)은 페달(Pedal)을 위한 연습곡이며 지속음과 함께 연주되는 형식적 대비가 잘 나타난다. 다섯 번째 곡 Nocturne은 양손의 트릴(Trill)을 위한 연습곡이고 마지막 곡 여섯 번째 곡 Finale -The Offering은 Organbook Ⅲ의 앞의 곡들에서 나타났던 20세기 작곡 기법들과 에튀드(Etude)를 위한 테크닉들을 총체적으로 두루 사용하여 작곡되어진 작품이다.;The American-born composer William Albright(1944-1998) is one of the most representative American composers of twentieth century and has left works of various music format. A quarter of his works are for organ and his new musical style has had an important influence on the organ music of twentieth century. He embraced the music of Europe to develop and advance his own music, in which the traditional French, British, and German format could be found, and American music was added to them to give rise to his own new and unique music. The characteristics of his music lie in lively and unique rhythm. He thought of rhythm as a very important element in the composition of music. This has caused life and liveliness to be well felt in his music. He had much interest and affection in ragtime music with jazz elements, and had contributions in the electronic music which was a new attempt of 20th century. The music of William Albright has humor. His overflowing humor is profound in the impromptu part of 「Organbook III」. He was interested in contrasting musical structure such as the new and the traditional and tonality and atonality, and applied the interest of music and humor to promote a very diverse musical style yet had a unity across the entire works within which he promoted variety and humor and the harmony of music in turn. To understand such composition technique of Albright a little better, his work of 「Organbook Ⅲ : 12 Etudes for Small Organ」 was analyzed which has been integrally made a good use of to find out about his music. This work consists of 12 pieces and is an etude composed of VolumeⅠ and VolumeⅡ, each of which contains 6 pieces. Each piece well combines not only the musical expression but also technical elements as program music. This these greatly aids in understanding Albright's music and also developing the techniques of the performers with the technical elements in this book.
