- Abstract
In cryptography, the n-th root problem is closely related to the pairing inversion problem (PI), which is a computationally hard problem whose hardness is believed (and proved in certain cases) to be equivalent to the discrete logarithm problem; see [4, 8]. Polynomials representing n-th roots in a finite field provide a deterministic method for computing n-th roots. In [2], Agou-Deléglise-Nicolas obtained results concerning the length, i.e. the number of non-zero coefficients, of polynomials representing square roots in prime fields.
In this thesis, we study an approach for computing cube roots in a finite field. More precisely, we generalize results of Agou-Deléeglise-Nicolas to the case of cube roots over finite extension fields. We parametrize polynomials with certain degree condition that represent cube roots in a finite field, and then prove existence of polynomials representing cube roots with small number of non-zero coefficients. Finally, we prove finiteness of the set of primes p for which there exist polynomials representing cube roots in {F_p}^* whose number of non-zero coefficients are exceptionally small.
