Between “Free Woman” and Mother

Abstract

This thesis investigates the two narrative threads of finance and domesticity in Defoe’s Roxana. It will examine the ways in which each narrative is told and developed as well as how they ultimately fail to merge together as one. This narrative composition is analyzed in order to better understand the tragic ending of Roxana as well as its significance in the history of the early novel. The first chapter considers Defoe’s fascination with the individual as evinced in his oeuvre. It will also reflect on how the figure of the individual becomes fraught with complications when applied to women whose fettered legal positions during his time barred them from fully realizing their identity as individuals. Roxana’s self-proclamation of herself as a “Free Woman” thus becomes an ironic critique of the law which prevented women from enjoying equal rights. The second chapter focuses on the economic narrative of Roxana by following the protagonist’s trajectory from feme covert to feme sole. It first scrutinizes the economic injustices suffered by Roxana owing to her mandated dependence on her husband which renders her helpless to fend against imminent economic disaster. The destitution that befalls her serves as a powerful critique of the legal system that failed to protect women in such circumstances. The next part of this chapter details Roxana’s methodical rise to outrageous fortune by acting as feme sole. Her mastery of financial literacy seems to frame Roxana as a success story, yet this triumph is undercut by the awareness that her wealth has been built on the illegal premise of her feme sole status. The third chapter explores the narrative of domesticity in Roxana. It first delves into the novel’s theme of marriage and considers Roxana’s cogent reasons for arguing against the marriage contract and thereby rejecting domesticity. The second half centers on her maternity; Roxana shows signs of aspiring to motherhood while at the same time wishing to remain concealed from her children. This fragile balance is disrupted when a daughter from her past appears and refuses to be silenced and forgotten. Roxana’s panic indicates that motherhood and domesticity have taken on threatening qualities that must be eliminated. The fourth chapter seeks to explain how the two narratives fail to form one coherent narrative. The precise and controlled tone that has so far marked the narrative shows signs of unsteadiness. It is made clear that Roxana knows of no way to reconcile her past with her present; she is unable to be both “Free Woman” and mother. This inconsistency between the two selves becomes the source of the novel’s aborted ending. This failed convergence is meaningful because it lends insight into the history of the early novel.;본 논문은 다니엘 디포(Daniel Defoe)의 마지막 소설 록사나(Roxana)에 드러나는 서술 구조에 대해 알아보고자 한다. Roxana에는 두 개의 서술 가닥을 찾을 수 있는데, 그 중 하나는 주인공의 경제 성장에 관한 것이며 다른 하나는 가정 생활을 토대로 하고 있다. 본 논문은 이 두 개의 이야기가 각자 어떻게 그려지고 있으며 나중에 하나가 되지 못하는 이유를 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 제 1장에서는 개인의 이야기를 다루는 소설의 특징을 알아보고 이러한 특징이 디포의 작품 속에 어떻게 나타나는지 보고자 한다. 디포의 소설은 모두 개인을 주인공으로 내세우며 그들의 성장을 그리고 있다는 점에서 공통점을 찾을 수 있다. 그러나 여성은 개인이지만 사회와 법의 억압으로 인해 개인으로서의 정체성을 완전히 확립하지 못하며 이러한 모순된 상황 속에서 록사나의 곤경의 시작을 찾을 수 있다. 제 2장에서는 록사나의 경제적 성장의 궤도에 대해 논한다. 18세기 영국의 여성들은 결혼 여부에 따른 신분이 있었는데, 먼저 남편의 보호를 받는 feme covert로서의 록사나의 상황에 대해 살펴본다. 록사나는 경제적 능력이 없어 재산을 탕진하고 결국 떠나버리는 남편 때문에 극빈의 상황에 시달리며 결국 어린 자식들과 헤어지는 상황에 놓이게 된다. 여기서 록사나는 남편의 무능함과 다가오는 파산을 알아보고도 법적으로 아무것도 할 수 없는데, 이 부분을 여성의 억울함에 대한 비판으로 읽을 수 있다. 그 후 록사나는 기혼녀의 신분인 feme sole 이듯이 활동하며 부(富)를 쌓아가게 되는데 이러한 그녀의 성장은 마치 개인의 승리 혹은 자본주의가 가져다 주는 가능성에 대한 이야기처럼 읽힐 수 있으나 록사나의 재산은 합법적이지 않은 방법과 매춘과 사기를 통해 얻었다는 점에서 한계를 보인다. 제 3장에서는 록사나의 가정 생활에 대해 논한다. 록사나는 첫 번째 남편으로부터 얻은 불행과 그 기억 때문에, 그리고 나중에는 본인의 탐욕 때문에 결혼이라는 제도에 대한 불신을 간직하고 있다. 따라서 그녀는 정직한 상인으로부터 결혼 제의를 받을 때 법이 여성에게 주는 제약에 대해 논리 정연하게 말하며 거절한다. 여기서 록사나의 주장의 근거가 되는 계약설의 모순에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 제 4장에서는 이 두 개의 서술 가닥이 하나로 통일되지 못하고 흐트러지기 시작하는 부분을 추적할 것이다. 결국 록사나의 결말은 갑작스럽게 끝을 맞이하는데 이러한 결말을 초기 소설을 쓰는 과정에서 나타난 귀중한 실험으로 볼 수 있다는 이론을 통해 그 의미를 찾아보고자 한다.
