Rebecca Clarke의 Sonata for Viola and Piano에 대한 연구 분석

Abstract

Rebecca Clarke(1886-1979)는 제 1차 세계대전과 2차 세계대전 사이에 활동한 뛰어난 영국의 여성 작곡가이다. 런던의 직업 오케스트라에서 활약한 최초의 여성 연주자 중 한명이었고, 동시대 최고의 연주자들과 실내악연주 활동도 함께 한 훌륭한 비올라 연주자이기도 했다. 그녀의 많은 작품 중에서 <Sonata for Viola and Piano(1919)>, <Piano trio(1921)>, <Rhapsody for Cello and Piano(1923)>가 그녀의 작곡 활동의 정점을 대표하는 곡들이다. 그 중에서 <Sonata for Viola and Piano>는 1919년에 주최한 비올라 음악 작곡 공모에서 1등인 Bloch와 동점을 기록한 작품으로 화제를 일으켰었다. 본 논문은 Rebecca Clarke가 작곡가로서의 명성을 확립한 작품인 <Sonata for Viola and Piano>에 대해 자세히 살펴보고자 한다. 이 곡은 5음 음계(Pentatonic Scale), 온음음계(Whole-tone-scale), 반음음계(Chromatic scale)등의 사용으로 신비적이고 민속적인 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 개인적으로도 이 곡을 좋아할 뿐 아니라, 본 소나타는 비올라 전공생이라면 한번쯤 공부하는 레퍼토리이기에 이 곡에 대한 논문을 쓰게 되었다. 먼저, Rebecca Clarke가 살아온 배경과 그녀의 음악적인 특징들을 살펴보고, 각 악장별로 형식과 선율, 리듬과 다이나믹을 토대로 이 작품을 자세히 분석해 보고자 한다.;Rebecca Clarke(1886-1979) is the most distinguished British female composer during the period between World War Ⅰ and World War Ⅱ, she was one of the first female members of the professional orchestra of London, and outstanding viola player who also had professional chamber music career, performing with some of the greatest musicians of her time. Among her many other works, <Sonata for Viola and Piano(1919)>, <Piano trio(1921)>, and <Rhapsody for Cello and Piano(1923)> represent the peak of her composing career. <Sonata for Viola and Piano> raised a sensation when it was tied for the first prize at Chamber Music Festival in 1919. In this paper, I analyse <Sonata for Viola and Piano> which brought Clarke fame as a composer. In this work, the use of pentatonic scale, whole-tone-scale, and chromatic scale creates an exotic, folklore atmosphere. I wanted to research about this piece not only because of my personal preference toward it, but also because it is a part of the standard repertoire of most students studying viola. In this thesis, I discuss the background of Clarke's life and the characteristics of her music first, followed by detailed analysis of <Sonata for Viola and Piano> in terms of musical form, melody, rhythm, and dynamics, by each movement.
