The history of art starts with aspiration and marvel for nature's beauty and mysteries. One defines and feels nature through the foundation of their own lives, there by giving birth to a wide variety of creative works of art that is a part of the time and place that the artist belongs to. For artist, experience serve as an important motivation for their work, therefore conceptions and emotions of daily activities are expressed through their work, resulting in viewers to see their work as delightful or beautiful. The ways art works have been expressed have evolved according to the time changes. From ancient to the modern times a wide range of shapes and theories has provided the background for the works produced. In the modern times, the artists' internal world has been expressed through inventive and original methods. The butterflies that we can commonly see possess beautiful colors, elegance and refinement. How ever to achieve that end, they must go through the rigorous stages of development, starting from an egg, metamorphosis into a larva then to a pupal. This process is similar to the stages of development that we, human being must also partake; and has appealed to the applicant, motivating her to express this phenomena in works of art. The goal of this research is to express in formative art, the concept of butterflies seen and felt by the artists' personal emotional world. For the purpose of researching the images that the butterflies provoke, two types of studies were conducted. First, the external aspects of the butterflies such as ecospecies, type and structural formation were studied. Then the internal aspects etymological and developmental meanings of the word "butterfly" were studied. Studies were also conducted by observing and scrutinizing the works of art such as paintings, textiles, jewelry and glass art as well as ceramics that chose butterfly as the subject matter. Utilizing these studies as the basis for the structural processes the applicant has created ten works through clay. For its physical formation, emphasis was placed on the physical composition of butterflies that enables it to have light and fluid mobility. In composition, the applicant's personal sensibility was utilized to create butterfly's symbolic meanings such as happiness, joy, lover, pure soul and beauty. Techniques used to produce the works were plaster molding in order to produce natural sense of space and freedom in movement; and slip casing in order to create a sense of delicacy, light and nimbleness. For plaster molding techniques, stoneware was used for its strength and resistance to warping. For slip casing projects, high fire slip clay called Super White, Mullite-Slip and colored clay bodies were utilized. The glaze colors used were chosen for their ability to conjure up the images of butterflies. They were white, yellow and blue and were predominantly used in matt forms to create light and bright colors. In projects that were composed of stoneware., after bisque firing a light coating of white slip was applied with a brush and then were glazed with a spray gun in order to reduce the absorbance of glazed particles by the clay body. For projects that were made up of Super White clay or Mullite-Slip, the glaze was applied with a spray gun and some parts were treated without glazes. All works were bisque fired for 9 hours reaching the highest temperature of 900℃. After glaze was applied, <Art Work 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10> were fired in an oxidization environment for 8 hours, reaching the highest temperature of 1250℃ and <Art Work 2> were reduction fired for 8 hours, reaching the highest temperature of 1250℃. In producing ceramic sculptural works of butterflies' inner and outer images, a deeper understanding of butterflies was made possible. It was also an opportunity to express butterflies' symbolic values and to explore the applicant's conception and sensitivity about the subject matter. Furthermore, the applicant was able to gain valuable experience in learning and utilizing the strengths, weaknesses and characteristics of different types of clay. The slip casting clays have strong tendencies to warp or shrink considerably, and the applicant hopes more research will be conducted in the future that will produce stronger clays.-
