Abstract
The objective of this study is to ascertain the major considerations when designing slacks for automobile drivers reflecting the elasticity of the human body posture. The scope of this study aims to find out the causes of discomfort in driving positions based on the results of a questionnaire survey and body measurements for slacks, as well testing four types of experimental slacks for comfort and fitness when sitting on a driver's seat and in the standing position. Based on the results, a slacks design for drivers with improved comfort and fitness is suggested. 1. Survey Results A survey was conducted among taxi drivers aged 40-50. The number of respondents was 309 and the key findings are as follows: The areas causing the most discomfort were the waist girth, slacks leg, abdomen girth, and knee. The areas that showed most wear were the hips, lacks bottoms, and slacks legs caused by rubbing in the driving posture. The hips, slacks legs, and thighs were reported as being frequently soaked in sweat. In general, taxi drivers tend to buy slacks in bigger sizes to accommodate discomfort in driving posture. According to the c2 test, the discomfort in areas like the thigh, waist girth, abdomen girth, front waistline, and slacks leg varied significantly according to body type. 2. Key findings of body measurements in the driving posture: Comparing the driving posture to the standing posture, significant variation was noted in the human body surface line in the area of anterior knee girth (left), anterior knee girth (right), posterior knee girth (left), posterior knee girth (right), whole inner leg line (left), and in case of 1/2 point, the upper segment of center back leg line (right), lower segment of outer leg line (right), upper segment of inner leg line (left), and in case of 1/3 point, the middle segment of the center back leg line (left), middle segment of center back leg line (right), lower segment of center back leg line (left), lower segment of outer leg line (right), upper segment of inner leg line (left), and the middle segment of inner leg line (left). The average amount of elasticity in the driving posture was waist girth 3.0cm, hip girth 7.4cm, front crotch length 1.4cm, and back crotch length 7.0cm. When comparing the driver seat and a normal chair, the amount of stretching at the waist girth, abdomen girth, and hip girth in a normal seat was greater than in the driver seat. In the case of the low back angle and high hip angle, the amount of stretching at the waist girth, abdomen girth, and hip girth was greater. The crotch length, front crotch length, and back crotch length in the driving posture stretched significantly and the amount of stretching depended on the angles of the back and hip. 3. Major factors to be taken into consideration when designing slacks for automobile drivers reflecting the elasticity of the human body posture: Based on the discomfort factor rated in the questionnaire survey and considering the proper allowances for slacks in the driving posture, a recommendation for slacks design for automobile drivers was formulated. The main factors taken into consideration in the design were waist girth, hip girth, front crotch length, and back crotch length. 4. Key finding of the fitness test on four types of trial slacks: In general, all the respondents were dissatisfied with the normal slacks but they reported increased comfort in type 3 and type 4 trial slacks which took into account the front and back crotch length. The fitness factors of the trial slacks varied significantly among subjects. The factors that affected fitness most significantly were tightness at the waist and hip line.
