앱북 디지털 소설의 상호매체성 연구

Abstract

미디어의 발달은 문자문화를 비롯한 책의 몰락에 대한 위기의식을 가져왔다. 불과 십여년 전까지도 문자를 통한 글쓰기와 책이 가지고 있었던 전통적인 권위는 이미지와 스크린으로 고유한 권한들을 내어주고 있다는 인식이 자명한 논란이 되었다. 문자를 기반으로 한 소설 또한 문학의 위기, 문학의 소외현상에 이르기까지 지난한 정체성 모색이 진행되어왔다. 이러한 과정에서 소설이라는 문학 장르는 시와 마찬가지로 매체변화와 더불어 장르 내 담화 양상에 다양한 변이를 보여왔다. 디지털 매체 시대의 주요 내러티브의 주요 형식은 무엇이 될 것인가 문제가 제기되는 현 상황 속에서, 본 논문은 현대의 독서매체가 종이책-컴퓨터-태블릿PC·스마트폰으로 다양화되는 흐름을 따라 문자기반의 소설-전자문학-앱북 디지털 소설이라는 시대적 장르 변화의 양상을 그 연구 배경으로 한다. 앱북(AppBook)은 기존의 이펍 포맷의 전자책과 달리 앱(App)으로 구현된 디지털 책으로, 앱북 디지털 소설(AppBook Digital Novel)은 '앱북(AppBook) 형태로 제작된 디지털 방식의 소설'이다. 이는 소설이라는 문학 장르가 매체의 변화와 결합되어 생성된 새로운 형태의 소설 양식이라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서 연구의 대상으로 삼는 작품은 루이스 캐럴(Lewis Carroll)의 원작 「이상한 나라의 앨리스」를 디지털소설로 변용한 <Alice for the iPhone>과 민음사에서 국내 최초 앱북 소설로 출시한 요시모토 바나나의 ＜안녕 시모키타자와＞，그리고 스토리스쿠프(Storyscoop)에서 출시한 오정미의 ＜대학생＞이다． 이 세 작품은 문자성을 그대로 유지한 채 상호매체적 요소를 결합시킨 새로운 형태의 소설 형식이지만 그 담화생성과 수용자의 지각방식에 있어서는 기존의 하이퍼픽션과 상이한 양상을 보인다． 본 논문의 목적은 앱북으로 제작되는 디지털소설에서 매체로 인해 소설의 담화방식이 전환되는 양상을 살피고 상호매체성 이론을 바탕으로 그 담화양상을 논의하는 것이다． 상호매체성은 상이한 두 매체 혹은 여러 매체가 결합하면서 각 매체의 고유한 독자적 특성이 어떠한 방식으로 작품에 적용되는지를 밝히는 이론이다. 다양한 매체들에서 연유한 요소들은 그들간의 경계를 허물고 상호의존관계, 상호보완관계, 침투, 보강, 중첩, 대조 등의 다양한 결과를 산출하는데, 이러한 매체간 상호작용을 통해 매체의 차이가 움직이는 영역인 형식의 과정에서 상호매체성이 야기하는 변화가 발생한다. 본고에서 주목하여 보는 것은 디지털소설이 스토리를 표현하는 담화의 영역에서 이전의 실험적 소설들과 달리 소설 형식의 독자성이 파괴되지 않은 채, 담화의 영역에서 새로운 전환을 보여주는 디지털 소설만의 특성에 관한 것이다. 본고에서는 다양한 매체를 하나로 통합 내지 융합하는 장으로서 유용한 디지털 매체가 앱북 소설에서 어떻게 기존 장르의 독자성을 유지하면서도 변형된 담화와 매체간 상호작용을 끌어내는지를 상호매체성의 관점으로 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 디지털 미디어 시대에 나타나는 소설의 새로운 형식과 확장을 통한 현대문학의 방향성을 모색해보고자 한다.

; AppBook digital novel is innovative creation to accommodate the characteristics of various genres and media, ranging from elements of traditional novel to media aesthetics and interactive components. Although it takes the form of book but depart from the frame of stereotypes seen in paperback or eBook. The contents of the text is associated with media properties and transformed according to the media. Therefore it is desirable to accommodate the intermediality of understanding between the digital media and formation discourse in creating stories. The advent of Tablet PC and smart phones had brought about changes in the reading form. With their rapid expansion, many people are growing more and more interested in the main form of narrative in the age of digital media. AppBook is the one of the most outstanding narrative form in this age. AppBook, a book represented in the form of App, has a distinct difference from a traditional form of book. Therefore, AppBook Digital Novel also differs from any other form of novel. It represents a new type of novel generated according to combining a literary genre with the changes in the media. The aim of this study is to figure out the characteristics of the AppBook digital novel and to discuss them based on the theory of intermediality. And the subjects of this study is three AppBook digital novel, <Alice for the iPhone/iPad> based on 「Alice's Adventures in Wonderland(1865)」, <Hi Shimokitazawa> and <College Student>. These works has been produced in the form of AppBook changing into a new form under the influence by the digital media. In this paper, a convergence to unify various media maintaining the uniqueness of the existing genre as a work for a novel is focused on the theory of intermediality. These study reflect the currently seeking new ways of expanding novel beyond its own borders in the age of digital media.
