Reading is an essential skill for English as a foreign language(EFL) students. With strengthened reading strategies, EFL readers will make greater progress and attain greater development in all academic areas. Reading, a meaning-making process where a reader is actively engaged in the written text to answer self-posed questions, requires strategies to hypothesize on incoming data on which a reader constructs meaning. Prediction strategy is a kind of reading strategy that supports reader’s comprehension using only partial language cues necessary to produce reader’s expectation. It enables a more rapid and efficient reading by a selective reading. Although the importance of the prediction strategy in reading comprehension has been demonstrated by previous studies, much remains to be learned about the effects of prediction strategies in EFL reading. Relatively few empirical research have tried to measure the effects of the prediction strategy on EFL student’s reading ability. The present study intends to investigate the effects of the prediction strategy on Korean EFL learner’s reading ability and attitudes toward English reading. This study also aims to explore the specific factors that account for gains in reading ability when employing the predicting strategy. 41 middle school students were participated in this study for 6 weeks. The prediction strategy training was conducted to the experimental group that consists of following 5 activities; predictions by pictures or illustrations, predictions by titles, predictions by an introductory paragraph, predictions by a first sentence, and integrated prediction strategies. With same reading materials, however, the traditional reading instruction was applied to the control group. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the post reading proficiency test showed there was no statistically significant difference between experimental and control group. It is assumed that the time alloted to the experiment was not long enough to make a significant difference. Provided more extended periods, the effects of prediction training might bring different results. This study also investigate what particular reading skills would be developed by the prediction strategy. According to the result, a skill of finding a main idea was significantly developed in the experimental group. The score of the experimental group was distinguished from the control group in this skill as well. Thus, it draws a conclusion that prediction strategy is particularly good at recognizing the main points. Second, the experimental group outperformed the control group in the post time-constrained reading test. There was a significant difference between achievements of two groups in this test. The time-constrained test is aimed to measure the learner’s capability to find the main ideas, themes, and factual informations as quickly as possible. The number of questions answered in the experimental group outnumbered that of the control group when time was restricted. In addition, the experimental group provided more accurate answers close to criterions. The results of the test demonstrates the prediction training enabled learners to catch the main points rapidly, and help them to be equipped with efficient reading skills in preparation to most time-restrained reading tests. Third, through the prediction strategy training, there was a meaningful improvement in the prediction strategy use in the experimental group. Compared to the control group, the experimental learners’ prediction strategy use in while-reading and after-reading have been significantly increased. Moreover, experimental’s the prediction strategy use in after-reading was superior to that of control group. This signifies experimental learners became armed with a prediction-based reading. Fourth, the analysis of survey illustrates experimental learners’ attitude toward English reading has been changed positively. Especially, learner’s interests, confidence, and autonomy were increased statistically significant. The further analysis of questionnaire on experimental group’s opinion about the prediction training reveals that more than half number of participants’ responses toward experiment was positive. Above all, the participants reported the prediction strategy training was helpful in that they could comprehend the text better and read faster. The favorite activity among the prediction training was the prediction by pictures and prediction by titles. The results of the present study indicate the prediction strategy can contribute an efficient reading by developing the skills to find the key textual clues going through the prediction and monitoring stage. Thus, the results of this study brought several educational implications as follows. Thus, the results of this study brought several educational implications as follows. First, as a creator of meaning, students should be equipped with various kinds of knowledge and ability to mobilize them to construct meaning. an aspect of comprehension is prediction. Readers who make predictions are actively engaged in the meaning-making process. Second, instruction related to prediction strategies should foster the development of the learner’s abilities needed to generate predictions while interacting with a text. Moreover, the instruction should help readers to develop a combination of prediction and monitoring strategies which contributes to both efficient and accurate reading. Third, prediction strategies can help students to determine their purposes and lead autonomous reading. It is important to remember prediction strategy instruction created a motivating as well as self-directed learning atmosphere. When readers read on to test their expectations, their motivation, and enjoyment can increase significantly. Prediction is at the core of good reading. Prediction strategies should be explicitly taught to assist students to improve their reading ability and positive attitude to reading. In short, teaching students how to utilize the predicting strategies in reading is what teachers must consider in preparing for EFL reading class.;최근 영어지도의 흐름은 학습에 있어서 학습자의 능동적인 역할을 강조하고 교사와 학생, 학생 상호간, 학습자와 학습자료 간의 상호교류를 통해 의사소통능력을 신장시키는 것을 목표로 한다.
