Abstract
EFL(English as a Foreign Language)상황에서 자연스러운 영어 습득 환경을 만들기란 그리 쉽지 않다. The main purpose of the current English education in Korean schools is to improve the students' competence in English communication. An elementary and necessary measure of communication is the acquisition of vocabulary knowledge. In the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting, storybook reading is known as a useful method for increasing a student's vocabulary knowledge. Storybooks are written in the native language, offer a method of direct language input, and also carry an interesting story that is especially attractive for the young language learners. Therefore, it is not a surprise that storytelling is a source of excellent teaching material. Many teachers in elementary schools prefer using storybooks as a primary source for teaching English. One of the most common styles of reading storybooks in the elementary school setting is the act of teachers reading to the students. Although the importance of storybook reading has been well documented, relatively little is known about its impact by teachers' different storybook reading styles, particularly for young EFL language learners. Therefore, this experimental study intends to investigate the effect of teachers' different reading styles on the incidental vocabulary learning and attitudes towards studying English in elementary school students. The two types of reading styles used for this study were 'Performance-oriented style' and 'Interaction-based style'. In the performance-oriented style, teachers read books in a dramatic manner with minimal teacher-student conversation during the storybook reading. In the interaction-based styles, teachers interacted with students during the reading by asking questions or having discussion about the story. The participants in this study were twenty nine elementary school students, who were divided into two groups: the performance-oriented style and the interaction-based style. Both groups read five selected books for a course of three readings each. At the conclusion of the readings, a vocabulary test was given to measure the students' vocabulary competency relative to their knowledge base at the beginning of the study. Secondly, students were given a questionnaire to assess their attitudes toward studying the English language. Thirdly, students were given a delayed vocabulary test one month later in order to assess their retention rate of the learning. The results of this study were as follows: First, there was a statistically significant improvement in vocabulary knowledge between pre- and post-test performance in both groups, respectively. The post-test scores of the performance-oriented and interaction-based groups, however, did not reveal a statistically significant difference with each other. Second, the analysis of the post-test questions addressing receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary did not show any significant difference between the two groups. However, there was a noticeable improvement in competence of productive vocabulary within each group when comparing pre-test to post-test. Third, as for the retention, the delayed test scores suggested that the interaction-based style was better than performance-oriented style. An explanation for this difference may be that the students in the interaction-based group had more exposure and opportunities to utilize the new vocabulary in the interactive process. Furthermore, retention of receptive and productive vocabulary was also significantly more effective in the interaction-based group based on the delayed vocabulary test. Finally, the post-test questionnaire assessing the students' attitudes toward the English storybook experience indicated that students in both groups were satisfied with the reading class. Additionally, students noted increased confidence and interest in studying the English language. In conclusion, reading storybooks aloud to students positively contributed to the students' vocabulary learning and attitudes toward learning English. In particular, the interaction-based style was more helpful for retention than performance-oriented style. The findings in this study are expected to provide insights and information that teachers can refer to when they are integrating storytelling into the curriculum. If further studies are executed with larger group of learners for a longer period of time, concerning diverse variables such as the pattern of teacher's interaction or the students' comprehension, it will be a powerful source for enhancing students' language learning and literacy development.
