Abstract
This study analyzes a modern viewpoint revealed in portraits of jesters at the court by Diego Velázquez(1599-1660), a court painter for the king of Spain in the 17th century. Spain established a highly centralized regime based on the Catholic Church during the 15th, 16th and 17th century, and thus court painters in Spain also mainly painted portraits of members of the royal family and religious paintings. However, Velázquez also painted a lot of court jesters of humble origins in this situation based on Spanish humanism. These portraits of court jesters can be divided into two categories: (i) jesters in portraits of members of the royal family, (ii) jesters painted independently. Since court jesters were at the closest location to the royal family while not being treated as humans at times, they were able to be included as an instrument to redound to the prestige of royal family as portrait subjects were extended beyond the royal family. On the other hand, a court jester was not only an interesting subject drawing visual attention but also a suitable subject for portraits for informal places. That is, jesters could become a subject for solo portraits because they attracted interest as the source of pleasure like today’s entertainers. Since Velázquez described jesters realistically focusing only on their features when painting their portraits, he was able to exclude degrading and discriminatory views towards jesters from the portraits. Then, jesters could change from marginal individuals in portraits of the royal family to a subject for independent portraits with the result that Velázquez treated them decently as humans in this way. Furthermore, Velázquez expressed the beauty and ugliness of jesters focusing on their visual aspects without prejudices, so his work is judged purely on its own merits free from speculative elements about the subject. Therefore, in portraits of jesters by Velázquez, jesters reflect a gap and contradiction between two worlds, an ideal and a reality, because they as members of the lowest stratum of society are in the ideal space of the Palace. Straightforward, undistorted portraits of jesters inside their silly appearances were mirrors reflecting the true reality in Spain at the time which the court painter saw within the boundaries of the Palace. Based on the findings above, this study intended to show that Velázquez’ portraits of jesters were a method for representing the objective appearance of an individual without being influenced by surrounding conditions, and were an output reflecting the results of modern recognition of humans. This leads to the conclusion that jesters, who were represented as a footnote or not expressed reasonably as humans, were presented from the humanistic perspective through Velázquez’ eyes looking reality straight.
