장소와 상상이미지의 공감 표현

Abstract

My works start with an "encounter" with the surrounding places which I tend to pass by without recognizing their presence. People live in the cities day after day but hardly perceive the urban landscape itself as it has become part of their lives. But sometimes when they visited some places, they would feel they have been there before even though it is the first time they are there. On the contrary, they would feel a distance from familiar places. Other times, they would feel like they are in virtual reality or hallucinating when they visit actual places. I too have such experiences, fiercely committing myself emotionally to certain places which don't feel like real and having hallucinations. The hallucinating images from the strong emotional experiences in those places are the important motives of my works. I tried to transfer my fantasy experiences of those places in everyday life onto screens. I also wanted to express my inspirations from actual places, which gave way to cyber spaces and thus were increasingly forgotten in today's high-tech era, in my artistic works. It was my wish to open the possibility for communication with others regarding invisible spaces that I experience through my screens. For such communication, I decided to use photographs as the medium since they were proper for expressing my surrealistic imaginations. Surrealistic imaginations that are expected not to be real will lose freshness and mystery once they are drawn and painted. But they can claim their presence in reality if they are captured on photographs, which makes an artist's imaginary images more real. Illusionary experiences of a place cause powerful waves to one's dull and languid life. I intended to talk about the potential of new experiences hidden in ordinary, everyday places in my works and thus rediscover their meanings in everyday life. This study was for my looking back upon and reviewing my works so far rather than for drawing a conclusion. Such a process will drive me to open another beginning in my works.;본인의 작업은 일상을 살아가면서 그 존재를 깨닫지 못하고 지나쳐 왔던 주변 장소와의 '만남'에서 출발한다. 우리는 도시를 배경으로 하루하루 살아가지만 생활의 일부가 된 듯한 느낌에 도시풍경 자체에 대한 자각을 하는 일은 드문 편이다. 하지만 때때로 어떤 장소를 방문했을 때 처음 온 곳임에도 불구하고 전에 와 본 듯한 느낌을 받거나 이와는 반대로 익수한 장소가 갑자기 낯설게 느껴질 때가 있다. 또 조금은 다르지만 어떤 곳을 방문했을 때 마치 실제로 존재하는 곳이 아닌 가상현실에 온 듯한 경험을 하거나 환상을 보게 될 때도 있다. 본인도 때때로 후자에 해당하는 경험을 하게 되는데 종종 내가 서있는 이곳이 진짜 존재하는 현실인가에 대하여 생각하게 될 정도로 어떠한 장소에서 강한 감정적 몰입과 함께 환각적 체험을 하게 된다. 이렇게 한 장소에 강하는 감정적으로 끌리는 경험에서 나오는 환각적 이미지들은 본인의 작업에 중요한 모티브가 된다. 본인은 일상 속에서 경험하는 이 같은 장소들에 대한 환상적 체험들을 직접적으로 화면에 옮기고자 했다. 이는 하이테크놀로지 시대에 사이버 공간에 밀려 점차 잊혀져 가는 실제 장소에 대한 영감을 예술작품을 통해 표현하고자 한 것이며 본인이 제시한 화면을 통해 본인이 경험한 비가시적 공간에 대한 타인과의 소통의 가능성을 열어두고 싶었기 때문이다. 이러한 소통을 위해 본인은 사진이라는 매체를 작업에 사용하는데, 이는 사진이라는 매체가 초현실적인 상상을 표현하는데 있어 적절하기 때문이다. 존재하지 않을 것 같은 초현실적인 상상은 그것을 그려서 보여준다면 더 이상 새롭거나 신비로울 것이 없다. 하지만 그것이 사진으로 존재하려면 어딘가에 그러한 현실이 존재했어야 한다는 생각이, 작가가 표현하고자 하는 상상의 이미지를 더욱 리얼하게 느끼게 할 수 있는 것이다. 어떠한 장소에서 느껴지는 환영적 경험은 건조하고 무기력한 일상에 강한 파장을 일으킨다. 이에 본인은 평범한 일상의 곳곳에 잠재되어 있을 새로운 경험의 가능성을 작품을 통해 이야기함으로써 일상에서 장소의 의미를 재발견하고자 하였다. 본 논문은 결론이라기보다는 그 동안의 작업을 돌아보고 정리하기 위한 것으로서, 이러한 과정을 통해 작업에 있어 또 다른 시작을 여는 원동력을 얻을 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
