알렉상드르 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat)의 영화음악 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

현대 사회에 접어들어 영화 산업의 발달에 따라 영화가 확대 재생산 되며, 영화 음악 또한 할리우드식 블록버스터 영화 음악이란 공식이 있을 정도로 전형적인 특성을 갖고 있다. 본 논문은 기존의 할리우드 영화 음악가와는 차별화된 특성을 갖고 있는 프랑스 출신의 영화 음악 작곡가 알렉상드르 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat ;1961년∼)의 작품에 대해 연구하였다. 데스플라는 영화에서 보여지는 영상의 움직임을 보조해주는 기능보다는 영화의 색채를 완벽하게 이해하여 음악적 색채로 표현하는 작곡가로 최근 할리우드에서 활발하게 활동하고 있다. 그가 작곡한 작품 중 <진주 귀걸이를 한 소녀(2003)>, <색,계(2007)>, <뉴문(2009)>에 대해 분석하여 그의 음악 스타일과 영상과의 상관관계에 대해 연구 하였다. 연구 방법으로 프랑스 영화 음악사를 통해 그의 음악사적 위치와 영향 받은 음악가들에 대해서 알아보고, 알렉상드르 데스플라의 생애와 작품 활동을 통해 그의 작품 배경을 살펴보았다. 본론에서는 영화의 전개에 따라 기,승,전,결로 나누어 영상과 음악과의 상관관계와 음악의 특징에 대해 분석하였다. <진주 귀걸이를 한 소녀>에서는 영상에서 보여지는 그림의 색채와 빛의 조화로움과 더불어 인물의 내면심리를 음악적인 색채로 예민하게 표현해냈다. 비올라 다모레, 하프, 비브라폰, 스트링 앙상블등의 각 악기들의 음색과 악기간의 조화로움이 돋보였고, 여러 가지 선법과 셋잇단 음표, 헤미올라 리듬, 쉼표의 적절한 사용과 해결되지 않는 9화음등으로 신비로움과 모호함을 표현해주어 회화적인 요소를 두드러지게 나타내주었다. <색,계>에서는 긴장된 분위기를 표현하기 위해 증4도, 단2도의 불협화 음정과 지속음, 오스티나토를 사용하였고, 영상의 내러티브에 따라 테마를 변주하고, 각 장면에 어울리는 음색에 맞게 악기를 선택하여 사용하였다. <뉴문>에서는 라이트 모티브적인 테마들이 영상의 내용에 따라 멜로디와 리듬이 변형되기도 하고, 테마들이 서로 연결되어 새로운 음악 형태를 보여주기도 한다. 각 등장인물의 성격과 분위기에 따라 악기를 선택하여 음색의 변화를 주었고, 선법과 조성을 함께 사용하며 전통적인 조성감을 약화시켜 인간(벨라)과 뱀파이어(에드워드)의 순탄하지 않는 사랑을 표현했다. 연구 결과 알렉상드르 데스플라는 영화의 색채를 음악적 색채로 표현하는 작곡가로 다양한 악기를 섭렵하여 악기마다 갖고 있는 세밀한 음색의 차이를 구분하고 최고의 조화를 만들어 냈다. 또한 인물들의 내면 심리를 음악으로 표현하고 등장인물의 테마와 변주를 통해 내러티브를 설명해주는 영상과 완벽한 앙상블을 만들어내는 음악가였다. 본 연구를 통해서 알렉상드르 데스플라의 음악을 비롯하여 다양한 영화 음악가들의 작품 연구가 체계화되어지고, 지속되어지길 바란다.;In modern society, the development of the film industry has entailed the extension and reproduction of movies, and film music has typical characteristics to the extent that there is a particular formula of Hollywood-type blockbuster film music. The purpose of this study was to examine Alexandre Desplat(1961∼)'s works, a French film music composer who are differentiated from Hollywood film musicians. He is a composer who has a perfect understanding of the colors and textures of a movie and expresses it in his own way instead of musically underlining the action on the screen. Lately, he takes an active part in Hollywood. Out of his works, three works were analyzed in this study to determine the correlation between his musical style and the picture: "Girl with a Pearl Earing(2003)", "Lust, Caution(2007)," and "New Moon(2009)." The film music history of France was investigated to look into his status in it and musicians who affected him, and his life and works were analyzed to find out the backdrop of his works and what made him compose his film music. In the main body, each of his works was analyzed in terms of introduction, development, turn and conclusion to grasp the correlation between the picture and the music and the characteristics of the music. In the work "Girl with a Pearl Earring," he struck a balance between the color and light of the picture and represented the inner psychology of the characters in his own refreshing way. The tone color and accord of the instruments including viola d'amore, harp, vibraphone and strings were especially good, and the proper use of different modes, triplet, hemiola and rest and the use of the unresolved ninth made the film music sound mysterious and vague, enriching its pictorial elements. In the work "Lust, Caution," he used discords, pedal point and ostinato to create a tense ambience and played a variation on the theme in accordance with the narrative. And the instruments that were appropriate for each scene were chosen. In the work "New Moon," the melody and rhythm of the themes of leitmotiv were sometimes changed in consideration of the content of each scene, and sometimes a new form of music was generated by linking the themes together. Different instruments were selected in accordance with the personality and image of the characters to give a change to tone color, and modes and tonality were utilized together. And the typical way of tonality wasn't highlighted to portray painful love between the heroine(Bella) and the vampire(Edward). The findings of the study showed that Alexandre Desplat is a composer who expresses the colors and textures of a film in a original musical way. He has a good understanding of various musical instruments and are well aware of the delicate differences of tone color among the instruments. Accordingly, he is one of the best composers who compose well-matched film music, and he describes the inner psychology of characters through music and creates the best ensemble between picture and music by playing a variation on the theme. This study is expected to stir up more systemic and prolonged research efforts about the works of many film musicians as well as those of Alexandre Desplat.
